I decided to try out this fairly new sushi bar at the mall. It has
this double-decker conveyor belt that delivers sushi on these plates
with a transparent flip-up lid. The main conveyor belt with the
usual suspects are on the bottom and the special orders are up top.
They calibrated the top belt to automatically stop at your seat
with your special order. Special orders are placed from a tablet
mounted above the top belt in front of your seat, where you can also
call the server and close out your check. The conveyor belts
wraps around the restaurant and seating, including the booths.
There is a slot in the counter/table where you deposit your empty
plates. They determine your bill by your plate count. Pretty neat
and high tech. It looks like they even have a mobile app and also
gamified the experience. I went here during non-busy hours because
I heard that there was usually a line during regular meal times.
This reminded me of a few conveyor belt style sushi bars that I have
been to. The first one I went to was in Japan back in 2000, which
blew my mind. This concept of sushi on a conveyor belt with the
different colored plates for the pricing was amazing! Where else
would this type of automation happening in a public setting? Stuff
like this always drew me to Japan.
Fortunately, most of the items that were on the conveyor belt in
Japan I could not identify. This sushi was not the thawed-out sushi
that I had become accustomed to in the Western World, no, this was
the fresh fish of the East! The fish that lives in that part of
the world that I knew nothing about. The same fish that swam with
Gojira! So not only did I get a new experience of sushi being
delivered to my via conveyor belt, but also I got to experience
consuming possibly radioactive fish that I could not identify.
DOUBLE WIN!
When I moved out West, I found other conveyor belt or revolving sushi
bars. One even used boats tethered together, floating on a "river"
of water surrounding the sushi chefs, who were stationed in the
middle and the customers on the other side of the river.
I just checked the web site[1] for the Kura restaurant and it looks
like they have over 450 locations throughout the world. If you like
sushi and have an opportunity to experience Kura, do check it out!
(Please note that I am in no way any kind of sushi connoisseur, but
their sushi tasted good to me and I enjoyed the experience!)
