Logout wrote a phlog phost[1] about his user agent database[2] that
he put together to collect and count the various user-agent strings
from web browsers.
He wrote about how bloated the wide world of web has become and how
some of the old hardware is made obsolete. This is one of the things
I dislike about today's WWW. It is unnecessarily wasteful.
This got me thinking about my old devices and so I decided to
participate. It also gave me an excuse to revisit my collection.
I added a list of user-agent strings that I added to the counts at
the end of this entry. Many of these are from fairly recent devices.
I am still working on the older devices that have browsers, but
can't seem to get them net access just yet.
This reminded me of connecting my Palm IIIc to the Internet using a
data cable connected to my Samsung SCH-8500 flip phone and use it
like a modem over the Sprint PCS network to my ISP. I used the
Blazer browser for the web and there was web clipping applications
for abbreviated web content. There was also an AOL Instant Messenger
client and I could connect to my server via ssh1. I wonder what ever
happened to WAP?
If you have an old device and want to be added to the database, check
out Logout's (My Little) User-Agent Database site.[2] Your device might
add a new entry!
