Woohoo! I finally finished transferring all of my MiniDV tapes over
to the PC! I have been meaning to do this for some time now and I
finally got it done! A majority of these tapes are family videos of
my kids growing up. There are some earlier footage of my travels and
shows I was able to record. I started working on this at the end of
December and have been chipping away at it tape by tape, for a total
of 138 tapes. | |
Each of these tapes needed to be transferred to a PC over firewire in
real-time. I still have my old Windows XP machine with PCI firewire
card in its 4U rackmounted case, which has had no network connection
since XP was sunsetted in 2014. Good thing it is still operational
and I am able to get video extracted from the tapes and transferred
to other hard disks. | |
Speaking of which, a few months ago, my friend Jamilla scored a box
full of discarded "Apple" hard disks that he gifted me since he knows
that I play with computers. He works next door to some studio that
had them in a box marked "free" and their systems were upgraded to
larger hard disks. The box had 16 disks ranging from 500 GB to 1 TB.
Just for kicks, I mounted a few and found that they had not been
wiped. Bad practice. Well, I didn't feel like poking around too
much so I wiped them and have been using them for backups and
archives. The Sabrent USB 3.0 to SATA external hard drive docking
station has been very handy for this task.
The tapes have been transferred in their raw format. One hour of
footage is roughly 11 GB. I am not really sure of the shelf life of
these tapes...I keep hearing different guesstimates, but I do know
that the oldest footage I have goes back to 2001 and the most recent
is 2013. Since it is now 2021, I think 20 years on the shelf has
them on borrowed time. | |
Here are some numbers: | |
