I decided to switch gears here and use my pa1mOne Tungsten|E2. It
has been awhile and it is good to see that it is still in OK shape,
as I left it. The device is part of my non-stop device charging cart
[1]. | |
I wish today's devices could still have battery doors and users could
replace them as they needed to. Some of my devices do, but the way
they make them to be disposible now, not likely. So the ones without
a door or have rechargeable batteries, I need to put them on the cart
for charge rotation. The joys of owning and maintaining old
electronics. | |
With the network stuff I phosted about last time, I have been thinking
about my data consolidation. Prior to cloud stuff, my data (calendar,
memo, tasks, contacts, pics, etc.) was simple. I synced a PDA with my
desktop, made backups, and that was it, Then I started getting newer
Palm devices and there was not much change with the way I sync'd and
backed up. I would even use the old device as a backup, regularly
syncing then data. I did this for many years, sticking with the palm
platform for my Personal Information Management (PIM) needs, swapping
out for newer palm devices until palm as a company started falling
apart and devices on the PalmOS platform started to disappear. Even
when I switched to the Nokia N900 smartphone, I ran GarnetVM and
synced my PIM data as I had before.
After I stopped using that device for daily use, which I had to since
the cellular provider stoppped supporting 2.5G, my PIM data was a bit
all over the place and the methods of using the data was not
consistent. I kept trying to find a system that would do the
integration and allow me to use whatever device...without living on
someone else's hardware. I was even thinking of building my own
database for PIM stuff, but didn't really have the motivation to do
anything about it. | |
So these days, my PIM stuff is loosely tied to my nextcloud server
running on an old laptop on my network. The integration is not as
easy and as simple as the palmOS hotsyncing days and I haven't put a
whole lot of time into finding a decent workflow for my needs. I
think this is something that I should revisit and would help put my
mind at ease in regards to organization and functionality, as well as
trusting my methods with my data. Who knows, maybe going back to
PalmOS devices might be my best bet. For the meantime, a
brainstorming list: | |
Necessities: Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Memo
Nice haves: photo/file/database syncing
If it is on a server, it needs to be mine.
Preferably internal to my network.
Options for sync with Nextcloud
Options for syncing with PalmOS
Options for syncing with Linux
Accessibilities from a Windows device
Accessability from CLI/shell
Compatibility with old platforms
Options for shared calendar/data with household.
My folks have a tree in their front yard that was uprooted from the
weight of the snow and ice and the winds from last week. My mom
told me about it this evening and there was sadness. I never
grieved for a tree before, but for this one I feel a loss. I knew
this tree since 1981. | |
