I was listening to episode 150 of the Ask Noah Show [1] where he
talks about Snowden's book, _Permanent Record_. I am currently
reading this book and there was a part in his broadcast that also
resonated with me in the book. It's in Chapter 2, pp. 27-28.
[2] | |
Noah has a snippet of it probably from the audio book around
the 50 minute mark and talks about it for the last 6 minutes
of his show. Check it out if you don't want to read.
Snowden basically wrote about fixing things, understanding
how things work, troubleshooting, and the "fundamental
responsibility you had to technology." This responsibility
to technology had me thinking about the care and negligence I
give to the technology I possess.
I think about the tech I have owned and much of which I still
own and care for. I think I do pretty well in the
understanding, maintenance, and even modifications of these
technologies. Well, duh, I'm a gadget guy that works in IT.
The whole "responsibility" part...I can see that. Since I
have the skills I have the responsibility for this
technology. I am "able to respond" when technology fails.
He goes on to write about self-reliance, which I have
previously written about, and then this quote which I liked:
"To refuse to inform yourself about the basic operation and
maintenance of the equipment you depended on was to passively
accept the tyranny and agree to its terms: when your
equipment works, you'll work, but when your equipment breaks
down you'll break down too. Your possessions would possess
you." | |
This quote seems to be the trend with people and technology
these days...well, this has been going this direction for
quite some time . It reminds me of the spirit of the
Hardware Hacker's Manifesto [3] from a few years back.
Basically, "If you can't fix it, you don't own it."
OK, I think I'm at a point where I have to stop...I've been
writing this entry on and off all day and I feel so
incoherent...kinda like yesterday's phlog phost. I think
there is some kinda connection between today and yesterday's
phost. I wish I had the words to elaborate more but I
am failing so I will myself to "be able to respond" and take
the responsibility for myself to disconnect and shutdown so
my body can run diagnostics and repairs during REM sleep.
