I found this Internet Password Logbook [1] in the clearance shelf
at Barnes & Noble the other day and I just had to pick it up. It's
basically an analog address book for your Internet passwords. It
also has a section for your Home Network settings and Software
License keys! It reminded me of this video that was on Ellen some
time back. [2] | |
I wonder how many of these things have been sold and are in active
use. Working in the IT industry especially these days, this method
of password management is verboten and is generally understood that
this is not a good idea(tm).
Even though this is funny, I cringed when I saw this video. Back
in the day when I was in grade school, I kept a notebook similar to
this for password management. It wasn't fancy like this or anything,
rather, it was a red, spiral-bound, Mead Trapper Keeper notebook.
I kept my BBS phone numbers (local and long-distance), phone codes,
logins, passwords, and notes in this notebook and carried it all over the
place. I'd even practiced primitive ASCII art in it.
Back then on the C=64, there was no multitasking. When you loaded
your terminal program, that's all there was. There was a phone
book, but no password manager. The BBS term I used back then was
EagleTerm and PhoneMan. [3] I didn't keep all of that information
in the wetware, hence the notebook.
Not really sure what happened to it after all these years...it's
probably still in my folk's basement or something. With this one,
I'll probably use it for something not password related, like a
journal or something...or maybe I can write my password hashes in
there so nobody can read it! And to make it even more secure,
convert the hashes to QR code and draw them in the book!
