I had a pretty good geek out yesterday...actually, for much of this
weekend! I had a chance to participate in #WeAreNameless and, and
was deflowered by Hackers! HACKERS!!! #WeAreNameless is a pretty
cool event that takes place on mastodon...or even the fediverse(?)
I still am unsure of the terminology.
Anyhow, Every month (?) a movie viewing is planned and coordinated
all over the world (thanks Ella K., Cyberpunk Goddess!) The movie
is usually cyberpunk/hacker related.
At the designated UTC time, HALF the Fediverse hits play on the
player of their choice and watches the movie together! VHS, BetaMax,
DVD, Blu-ray, AVI, ASCII streaming, homemade flipbook....whatever
format you got! I think smj and froggyme from SDF was even watching
on LazerDisc! How cool is that!
During the viewing, movie banter goes on in mastodon using hash tag
WeAreNameless while we watch the movie. I think they typically watch
on Saturday, but they watched on Sunday since it was the 24th
anniversary of the film, "Hackers" and it was also the 1 year
anniversary of #WeAreNameless, (and it was also my 0-day participation
anniversary for #WeAreNameless, LOLZ!)
I leveled up with my unofficial homemade #WeAreNameless participant
badge! It looks like this:
--==<<( #WeAreNameless )>>==--
Also during my geek out, I got to hang out on a retired incarnation
of SDF that was running on an AT&T 3B2/500. I'm not familiar with
the 3B2, but I thought it was really cool that the system was brought
back online. The system runs UNIX System V r 3.2.2 and was active
in the 90's. I was not part of SDF back then, but I was aware of the
community's existenz. Man, so much computing history right here on
SDF! | |
I was surprised to see that the 3B2 has Microsoft Word running on
it that you can run from a terminal! I think the only versions of
MS Word that I have used has only been in a GUI in MS Windows. I
ran it for kicks and it runs Microsoft (R) Word Version 5.0.4! I
created a file just to test it out.
This past weekend was the Vintage Computer Festival Midwest, over in
Elmhurst, IL and SDF had a booth with SDF VoIP and the SDF AT&T 605
Travelling UNIX terminal. I think the terminal was attached to the
3B2/500 and festival attendees chatted in an older version COM(MODE),
the SDF chat software. I saw some attendees in there and they gave
festival weather updates and encouraged users to visit Elmhurst. Wish
I coulda been there. | |
I also popped in and out of anonradio.net, listening to the streams,
as well as the anonradio COM channel this past weekend. Man, I
haven't geeked out like this for quite some time! I even got trucker
butt from sitting down for so long! I found out on COM that Ric Ocasek
from The Cars and Eddie Money had passed over the weekend. It made me sad.
DJ Daniel was playing some of their tunes as well as some tunes by
other artists that have past that are part of my timeline. It made
me exponentially sad. The Daniel made up for it some by playing
a big block of Gary Numan. Friends _are_ electric!
Gahh...forgot the footnotes and eyez iz tired. Look it up.
