I was re-enrolling in my benefits earlier and found out that
work wants me to pay them, or rather, the health insurance
company, $25US per pay period for being a smoker. That makes
me unhappy. I understand that me being a smoker costs them
more money in the long run and the $25US per paycheck might
help me to quit, but I still don't like it. I don't like to
be told what to do and I don't like this kind of coercion.
Yeah, I know that smoking is a bad habit of mine and has been
for almost the last three and a half decades. I have tried
quitting before with not much consistency. Even through the
voluntary program that was available at work.
The language on the enrollment form stated, "use of tobacco
products." What about marijuana? It is legal in this state
but the pot heads don't get penalized? What about alcohol?
Or even breathing in the smog from the cars in the city?
There is probably not a whole lot I can do about this and
will pay the $25US per pay period tax...that's like $650US a
year for being a smoker. Maybe the extra $650US will
motivate me into taking more sick days. The rebellious teen
in me is fuckin' pissed!
