Waiting for my flight here in Oakland. On my way back from
training. I feel exhausted, but glad to be going home. I am
not too fond of air travel these days. It actually stresses
me out so being here super early was a good thing for me. I
could really use a nap though, but I dislike sleeping in
public. Hence the SBUX.
I just finished two books; one audio, one analog. The audio
book is called, "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World
That Can't Stop Talking", by Susan Cain. I have read the
analog book prior to listening to the audio book. The title
pretty much describes the book. It is a book about
introverts. I had first learned about the book when it was
discussed on NPR a few years ago. [1] It was brought up
again recently at work and is in our lending library. I
ended up getting the audio version of the book since I had
some Audible credits. I enjoyed revisiting the book in the
audio format. Some chapters, I followed along with the book.
This book really resonated with me since I am an introvert.
I have been aware of this and this book
helped me further understand and work with my strengths and
weaknesses in this regard. Prior to reading this, I had a
vague understanding of this. The book helped bring a deeper
understanding of why I think things and do things a
certain way. For instance, why do I feel like
isolating whenever I go to a party or social event, even
though I really want to go? It turns out with the way I am,
I get over-stimulated and even overwhelmed too quickly by
all the people and all of the stuff going on at the party.
If it were a small intimate party with just a few people, I
tend to do better with those.
These days, I now know that if the party is on a Friday night
at the end of a work week, forget it. Don't even invite me.
I'm usually so exhausted at the end of the week that I don't
even want to be around people. If you do invite me and I
show, I will most likely not keep good company and my social
interaction with you would be kept at a minimum. I have
communicated this to my wife (who loves parties) and she now
has a much better understanding of why I can be such a
poopyhead after work on Friday. She knows that there's a
slim chance for me doing anything too social on a Friday
night. Now, if I am well-rested and the energy is there, I
should be fine, but I would only socialize with a few and
would need an exit if my resources become depleted. After
that, I would need to isolate at home to recharge.
It has also helped me articulate to other people about my
introversion and also how I can best work with other
introverts as well as extroverts. Although the book focuses
on introverts, it does talk quite a bit about extroverts. I
have a different perspective of them now than I did
previously. I also understand more of how they are and why
they are which allows me to work with them at a greater
capacity than previously.
Right now, I am having a difficult time writing this since
a flight just arrived and there is a stream of arriving
passengers in front of me. It is distracting and I keep
losing my train of thought. I'll continue after they pass...
...and I'm back. | |
So, If you think you are an introvert or have an introvert in
your life and would like some deeper understanding of you or
that person, I highly recommend this book. If you don't like
to read, there is the audio book. If you don't want to
endure a book, there is also the NPR piece from before with
transcribed audio. | |
