Jirka wrote about the Punkt MP01 mobile phone in his phlog
recently.[1] I ran across this device in this Wired article
[2] when I was searching for a new mobile dumbphone since I
did not want my computing mixed in with my voice and text
device, like how it was back in the day. The Punkt MP01
seemed like an option at first...loved the design and form
factor, but unfortunately it was a 2G phone and could not be
a hotspot. Also, my provider was getting rid of 2G and 2.5G.
I ended up getting a Sonim XP5700...rugged "dumb" phone
with hotspot capabilities. This was on clearance for cheap
since a new model was out. It runs a minimal version of
android and apps can be side loaded, but I still don't trust
it. I think the killer app on the device for me is the
dedicated flashlight button, which I probably use the most.
I just checked the Interwebs and I see that there is a newer
version, the MP02, which supports 4G. [3] Slick device but
I'm not in the market for a replacement. Nice to see that
there is a new model. | |

tfurrows wrote about the "Endless River of Knowledge and
stuff" [4] I like what he was pondering about in his writing
regarding the ever-expanding amount of information and
knowledge available and how it keeps growing and he keeps
giving and taking. He asked the question why. At the end of
his writing, his answer was that it gives him joy. For me,
this conclusion is good enough. Period.
As for the progression of the knowledge tools throughout
history, maybe the oral tradition did not scale to the
knowledge at some point, so we upgraded to written knowledge.
Then written was not sufficient so we upgraded to printing.
Then print upgraded to digital. And then storage grew from
paper punch cards to magnetic media to optical media to
global networks to quantum storage to quantum intarwebz with
pubnix systems running on qubit pis. Maybe the point is not
to contribute and consume it all as an individual, rather to
share and evolve the knowledge collectively as a species and
further the (d)evolution of the human race. Whatever that
means. | |
