The MFJ8621 is another great deal. Crystal controlled 5 watts about $110. I
have this on an omni for 2m users. Works very well with several local users
at 9600 baud.
The D4-10 is the cream of the crop - also the priciest at around $370
(LIST). This thing is close to commercial quality and worked "plug and
play" with the KPC9612 and the Kantronics DataEngine. I'm really impressed
with the D4-10. I'm currently using it WITHOUT modems for a 19200 bps
digital voice link experiment (it has digital inputs and outputs).
The KPC9612 is a dual 9600/1200 TNC that can do both simultaneously. It is
also capable of 19200 baud with the right radio (I've used it with both a
modified TEKK and the D4-10 at 19200) The DataEngine is a highpowered TNC
with an NEC V40 (80286 class compatible) it is essentially an embedded PC
and even runs JNOS standalone. Can do >56kb with right modems. Price -
around $390 (LIST).
D4-10+ DataEngine+ (1)DE19k2/9k6 ~$870
D4-10+KPC9612 ~$570
TEKK KS900+KPC9612 ~$320
MFJ8621 + KPC9612 ~$310
These are the list prices for the Kantronics stuff. I'm sure you can get it
cheaper.
If performance (and you are not ready for GRAPES) or EASY is a priority
then my recommendation for easy 9600 baud is the D4-10 w/DataEngine or
KPC9612. My second choice for a less expensive solution is the TEKK(440) or
MJF8621(2m) w/the KPC9612.
I'm sure there are other solutions but these are ones I have actually
tried. For what it's worth.
The crystal controlled radios are the only way to go. The are relatively
inexpensive and offer much better performance than any synthesized radio
can provide. Best of all they need no modification. I have found an amp for
440 that works super it is the Mirage D15. It uses PIN diodes for T/R
switching and works reliably down to 10ms TXdelay on my system ( with an
appropriately fast radio/TNC on the other end).

Subject: low cost, good performance link recommendations.
I'm interested in recommendations and approximate prices (in $US) that
any of you might have for equipment suitable for providing a 70cm radio
link between two sites where a couple of watts and yagi's will work nicely.
What we are interested in building is something that is IP capable
9k6 half duplex minimum, we are undecided as whether to use KISS tnc's
or some type of 8530 card. We are interested in establishing the link
quickly so Plug'n'Play solutions are preferred.
I'm particularly interested in any Plug'n'Play 8530 card + 9k6 modem + 70cm
data radio packages that might be available.
We're aware of the Tekk data radio's, are there any other options ?
We're a bit in the backwaters here and are bound not to be aware of
at least some of the valid options available.
regards
Terry

I've just accidentally found Barry's web site which summarises pretty much
what I'm after at:
http://hydra.carleton.ca/articles/hispeed.html
If you have anything that Barry hasn't noted I'd been keen to hear from you
(a note to Barry might be useful too).
