GENERAL STUFF
Eudora is an Internet-compatable mailer for Macintoshes. It can be used
with MacTCP, the Communications Toolbox, or any of the UUCP implementations
for the Mac. Eudora versions 1.4.1 and earlier (that is, everything you find
here) is free.
Eudora 2.0 is commercial software; please contact
[email protected] for details.
WHAT'S NEW IN 1.4.1
Eudora 1.4.1 incorporates EudoraTables (if you need to
use EudoraTables at all). It reflects the discovery of standard names
for the Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish tables.
EudoraTable Helper is a plug-in you can give to correspondents with 1.4
or 2.0, if you use one of the national character sets. It will allow the
older version to recognize the new names.
Also, the formats for the EuIM and EuOM resources have changed. If you
made custom EuIM or EuOM resources, you'll have to redo them. This won't
happen again.
Eudora 1.4.1 has two major new features; support for MIME, and support
for AppleEvents. Bugs have also been fixed, and a few other minor changes
have been made.
We have a manual now:-) Let us know what you think.
Eudora & MIME
First, a word about MIME. MIME is a new standard for Internet mail that
allows mail applications to label the contents of their mail. It lets
mailers say things like: "This is a Microsoft Word document, encoded with
uuencode." Or: "This mail uses characters from the Macintosh character
set." Or: "This is a picture in GIF format."
Eudora sends all its attachments in MIME format, and puts the proper
character set labels on its texts. It uses the proper MIME "encodings" to
send binary data; quoted-printable and base64, as appropriate.
Eudora can also decode incoming MIME messages. Eudora can't directly
display many of the MIME message types, but it does write them to files (just
like attachments) so that you can open them with the proper application. There
is even a mechanism for automatically setting the Macintosh file "type" and
"creator", so that double-clicking the documents opens the right
application.
APPLEEVENTS
Eudora's support for AppleEvents is very rudimentary. It accepts the
required events, plus supports portions of the core suite and its own
private suite of events. It is (just barely) possible to use Eudora as a
mail engine from other programs via AppleEvents. Improvements to Eudora's
AppleEvent support will be ongoing.
For documentation on the AppleEvents Eudora supports, please see
"EudoraSuite.rtf".
COMPATIBILITY
System 6
Sorry, Eudora 1.4.x doesn't run under System 6. If you must use System 6
try Eudora 1.3.1
AppleTalk Remote Access:
If you have ARA's "Answer calls" option selected (from Remote Access
Setup), and you have Eudora configured to use the Communications
Toolbox on the same port that ARA uses, Eudora may be unable to connect.
This is a conflict between the Communications Toolbox and ARA, and
there's nothing we can do about it. Turn "Answer calls" off in ARA if you have
this problem.
Apple Modem Tool:
Eudora is *incompatible* with version 1.0 of the Apple Modem Tool. You
*must* use version 1.1 or later of the Apple Modem Tool, or the Hayes
Modem Tool. Eudora is also incompatible with certain beta versions of the Apple
Modem Tool version 1.5, though Eudora will be compatible with the final
version of 1.5.
Powerbook Modem Tool, Express Modem Tool:
Eudora is *incompatible* with the PowerBook Modem Tool and the Express
Modem Tool. Use either the Apple Modem Tool version 1.1 or later or the
Hayes Modem Tool.
Quadra/Centris:
Eudora is incompatible with the screensaver "Moire", when run with the
68040 caches enabled in 32-bit mode. (Don't ask me why; I don't know.) Try
"DarkSide" instead.
NOW Utilities 4.0:
Do *not* use the "reopen documents" feature of the NOW Utilities (or
similar programs). It will not work as intended with Eudora, and it is really
not necessary for Eudora anyway. You may disable this option by using the
"Disable Re-Launch" menu in the "Exclude..." dialog in the SuperBoomerang
control panel.
Versions of NOW Utilities prior to 4.0.1 may interfere with setting your
text file application or attachment folder in the Configuration dialog.
NOW Up-to-Date Reminder 2.0's Show Battery Status option causes crashes
when Eudora is printing. Turn Show Battery Status off. NOW is aware of the
problem, and has promised to fix it.
Norton Directory Assistance:
Many directory shortcut programs interfere with the dialog that lets you
set a folder for attachments (in the Configuration... dialog). Turn such
programs off, select your attachments folder, then turn them on. This may
be fixed in a future release.
Global Village PowerPort Modems
If you have a PowerPort modem and you want to use Eudora with it, you
need to use System 7.1 or the Powerbook Tuner init (available from Global
Village). Even so, there seems to be some sort of continuing flow control
problem. If you get errors on attachments, you may find it helps to set
your baud rate to no higher than 9600 baud and set an attachments folder.
CAP/aufs
CAP/aufs has a bug that causes problems with Eudora and a few other
programs. A patch is available; be sure you have it.
Carbon Copy/Mac:
There are reports of incompatibility between CC/Mac and Eudora.
Apollo:
Version 1.0 of the Apollo application launching utility cannot handle
long window names (such as Eudora generate) if Apollo is configured to sort
windows alphabetically. Use the Window menus page of the Preferences
dialog to set the sorting to front-to-back.
Greg's Buttons:
Versions of the extension "Greg's Buttons" prior to 3.0 may interefere
with the Communications Toolbox.
FileGuard 2.5.1:
There are reports of problems between Eudora and FileGuard 2.5.1.
PLEASE REPORT PROBLEMS
We can't test all situations or Macintosh configurations. If you think
your may have found a bug, We'd like to hear about it. Send mail to
[email protected]; tell us what kind of mac you have, what version
of Eudora you're using, what you did, what happened, and what (if any) error
messages Eudora gave.
