─── A beginner guide ───
Bitreich conference is held for and by tools of digital conviviality.
This guide was written to help people to join the conference without
previous knowledge about this culture. The last section is a list
of software you need.
Any feedback to help us to improve this document and the conference
experience is warmly welcome. Please tell us
* the problems you've been through
* the alternative software/strategy you used
* your general feeling about the experience
Enjoy conference
# INTERACT WITH THE COMMUNITY
Bitreich use an IRC server (convivial, decentralized instant messaging of choice)
to chat with the members. Some channels are topic related or dedicated to one
native language (see the "Come and join us on IRC!" section of the bitreich
homepage)
English: ircs://irc.bitreich.org:6697/#bitreich-en
Deutsch: ircs://irc.bitreich.org:6697/#bitreich-de
Français: ircs://irc.bitreich.org:6697/#bitreich-fr
Nederlands: ircs://irc.bitreich.org:6697/#bitreich-nl
Italiano: ircs://irc.bitreich.org:6697/#bitreich-it
The conference channel is
ircs://irc.bitreich.org/#bitreich-con
# ATTENDEES
Il you use a mainstream linux distribution, all the tools you need for the conference
are probably installed already. Under mac or windows, you must install some extra stuff.
(see SOFTWARE section).
The conference schedule is available from the conference homepage:
gopher://bitreich.org/1/con/2021
To see the slides while a talk is running, open a terminal and be sure it
will be able a slide (see SLIDES section for details but mostly, it's about
resizing your terminal) then start the command
ssh
[email protected]
It's up to the speaker to update slides: you just seat and watch. If you
want to listen to her/him, please connect to the audio stream (again, see the SOFTWARE section)
gopher://bitreich.org/9/radio/listen
## REPLAY
there is no "replay" (you can't resync slides and audio) but both of them are available
on the conference archive page (mp3 and text format).
gopher://bitreich.org/1/con/
# SPEAKER
Announce your conference to the organizers on IRC #bitreich-con
* get used to the conference slides system: catpoint. you should also give a try
to the TOOLS file of the catpoint repository (git://bitreich.org/catpoint)
as those tools will ease the production of slides with awesome visual effects ;)
* write your slides and send a copy to the organizers (__20h__ ou adc)
* further instructions will be provided on #bitreich-con, don't hesitate to ask
# SOFTWARE
I personally use linux or openbsd mostly in the terminal so i'm sorry i don't know
what i'm talking about in this section. Don't hesitate to help us to improve this
page. The tools *I* use (maybe not the one you should use) are
* weechat as IRC client
* mpv icecast client
* w3m et the sacc/vi to surf the gopher
Anyway, the following list should be OK for the most of you with a minimal amount
of effort. However i'm not sure it will provide a good experience (windows and mac
users: i feel your pain).
## GOPHER
the shortest way to do it is to use an http proxy from your browser (
http://gopherproject.org/)
## IRC
* i will not feed the troll about your unix IRC client: there are so many of them.
just pick one.
* under windows, you can give a try to mirc (it was my IRC client of choice in the 90
and it seems to be maintained
https://www.mirc.com/news.html)
## ICECAST
* mpv (
https://mpv.io/) is available on most systems and does support gopher: this is our
first choice.
* very last development versions of vlc (
https://www.videolan.org/) support gopher as
network stream.
* XMBC should be fine too (any plugin for ssh client? ;))
# THE SLIDES
Those are just utf8 text files that are
* 100x35 caracters max
* with no control caracter allowed (no bold, no color, …)
* named with numerical order of appearance. Example:
010_intro
015_how_am_i
020_my_point
030_outro
040_thanks
