Firstly, tab-stops are _usually_ but not _always_ set at 8.

Secondly, a TAB character will move the cursor over to the next tab-stop, _not_
over by 8 characters.  IOW, if your cursor is already on column 5 the TAB will
only move you over 3.  And if your cursor is on column 33, the TAB will move
you over 7.
