The Synchronet Virtual Device Driver (sbbsexec.dll) for Windows NT-based
operating systems (i.e. WinNT/2K/XP/2K3/Vista) has been updated with a major
new (somewhat experimental) feature:

*** Virtualization of the physical "COM1" UART (serial port) ***

This should allow you to run DOS programs (e.g. door games, transfer protocol
drivers, BBS utils) that access the serial port (COM1) directly. i.e. the
program does not need to support the "FOSSIL" standard interface.

Some programs that support FOSSIL *may* actually run better if re-configured to
use UART/COM1 instead (depends on the program).

The programs must be configured to access "COM1" (I/O address 3f8, IRQ 4).
Multiple programs can be running (on multiple nodes) simultaneously, all using
their "virtual" COM1, without conflict.

This is a brand-new feature, available as a downloadable patch for Synchronet
v3.xx-Win32:

ftp://vert.synchro.net/Synchronet/dosxtrn.exe (not required, but recommended)
ftp://vert.synchro.net/Synchronet/sbbsexec.dll

Download these files into your Synchronet "exec" directory (after making a
backup of your current versions of these files).

Let me know what you find (in the Synchronet support discussion groups)!
