I've been pecking away at this project off and on for a bit and you can try it
out on your own bbs if you download the javascript and install like any js
xtrn with the commandline "?oregontrail.js" or whatever:

http://grudgemirror.com/bbs/oregontrail.js

You can also try it on my board : futureland.grudgemirror.com ... to get there
you'll have to navigate my interface however.* see the * asterik footnote at
the bottom on how to do so.

It seems to work pretty well, but the way I went about writing the program was
pretty haphazard (carving BASIC code into Javascript and trying to figure out
what was happening).  Nonetheless, if you find a bug, let me know, or anything
in the gameplay mechanics that need to be changed as well.

I haven't really changed too much aside from adding some better(?) coloring
and formatting to the game and adding a random message to tell you you're a
lousy shot when you type the wrong word.   I might make some changes to the
game in the future, like using ANSI instead of text, and perhaps changing the
theme.  Anyways, assuming this doesn't have any bugs it would probably be the
closest to the original 1977 code I used as my reference towards being like
the original game (which can be found here for reference :
http://deserthat.wordpress.com/2010/11/07/oregon-trail-ver-3-basic-3- 1-1978/)

Anyhow, I'm rambling.  See the footnote below for how to try it out on my bbs
(guest account available) :

*from the main interface, press TAB to exit chat into the menu.  use the arrow
keys to select "games" from the menu, select "more external programs
unorganized" to get to the default Synchronet externals menu, select "Games"
from the menu and then select "oregon trail".  (the game does not properly
echo console output when launched from my frame shell, i'm working on this,
but it shouldn't be an issue for most people outside of my board)
