Hi, Tony...

DS>   To make a long story short... courtesy costs nothing, but pays big
DS> dividends. While you may not like another ham's personality, actions,

V@> That goes for all endeavours in life.

This is true. The world would be boring if everyone was the same.

V@> Agree totally.

Sounds like what one needs to do with their spouse or significant other...
or they may not get that new HF rig they have their eyes on. <G>

V@> Indeed.  There have many times I've changed frequency or turned the
V@> radio off, because I didn't find the conversation interesting, or
V@> someone I really didn't want to talk to was on air at the time.
V@> Problem solved! :)

Unfortunately, there are always some "bad apples" who think that "the
rules of the hobby don't apply to them". Yet, here in the U.S., when they
signed the NCVEC Form 605 at the license exam session, they are "agreeing
to abide by Part 97 of the FCC Rules". So much for it being worth the
paper it's written on (sigh!).

V@> While in my book, it's OK to politely break in to join in the existing
V@> conversation, or even to put out a call (and either keeping any
V@> conversation brief or immediately QSYing, once contact has been made -
V@> and don't forget to thank those already using the frequency), after
V@> asking those on air politely. Butting in and putting out a call without
V@> any acknowledgement of those using the frequency is simply rude (unless
V@> it really is an emergency), as is taking over the frequency after
V@> breaking in.

I've even had some stations who feel like it is a "heinous crime" if they
don't check into a net, aren't the first checkin on the log (net control is
always going to be #1), etc. To me, if I have to miss a net where I'm set as
Net Control...due to weather (we're in our tornado season now), or health
issues, (recovering from kidney/bladder stone surgery), I try to get a
replacement. Unfortunately, the internet can do down with little or no
warning. But, if it's a "regular net" where I just checkin for the numbers,
and I have to miss it, it's no big deal.

V@> ... The truth will set you free.  But first it'll piss you off.

Never mind the truth hurts...just like a urinary catheter (I know that
well from this past week). In that regard, "it's better to be pissed off
than pissed on". One of the area hams was doing a net several years ago,
and holding his infant son with one arm, and the mic with the other. Well,
his harmonic didn't like the fact that his OM wasn't devoting all his
attention to him...and promptly proceeded to urinate all down Daddy's arm!!
To which, he had to call his XYL for assistance. Laughingly, he said that
"I'll bet no other net control operator has had that experience". :P
