Like any other hobby, ham radio has a price range for everybody.

You can get a small handi-talkie for under $50 on Amazon...all the way up to a
"DC To Daylight" rig that was noted at Dayton Hamvention a few years back for
$17,000!!

If you're able to have RF, you have to consider things such as the radio, power
supply, SWR Meter, antenna, and Coaxial Cable, for openers. If your computer is
linked in, you have to consider internet costs, software fees, etc.

But, for those with antenna prohibitions, you normally only need:

1) A computer, preferably a Pentium, with a high speed CPU. It can be either a
desktop or laptop, but the desktop works better.

2) A high speed internet connection...Wi-Fi, DSL, or LAN.

3) A desktop mic and speakers, or a headset mic.

4) The appropriate software for the mode you are working.

5) Connecting devices (such as a DV Dongle for D-Star).

6) A Technician Class or higher amateur radio license.

Plus, operating with a computer, especially a laptop, means less to lug around,
and you can do portable operations, demos, etc. virtually anywhere you can get
an internet connection.
