The primary mission of amateur radio is handling traffic...particularly when
all other modes of communication fail.

In central Arkansas, the cellphone networks are the first to fail when there is
bad weather...either severe weather (thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flooding),
or winter weather (snow and ice).

Many other modes of communication fail with a loss of power, or in a disaster.
Ham Radio operators are known for setting up portable operations practically
anywhere, and operating "off the grid". Training exercises, simulated emergency
tests (SET's), etc. are done throughout the year, in preparation for "the real
thing". The last weekend of June, known as "Field Day", allows hams to showcase
the hobby, but also to operate under simulated emergency conditions (i.e. no
commercial power).

The Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) is another aspect of emergency
communications (EmComm), that hams become involved with. The website is at:

http://www.fema.gov/community-emergency-response-teams

There is a C.E.R.T. D-Star Net on Reflector 58A, every Thursday night at 8:30pm
Central Time. You do not have to be a member to check into the net.

C.E.R.T. Training is free, and the life you save, may be your own.
