I found a similar thing in the hardware/networking area.  When I was going for
a job as a PC tech at a training company, mentioning that I helped run a
hobbyist dialup ISP (in 1997) did carry a lot of weight.  That meant knowledge
of PCs, Linux, mosems, networking, server applications, etc.  And yes, I did
get that job.

I agree, it's definitely a showcasing of DM's skills as a developer.
