Horses for courses.  Scripting languages are very useful.  On Linux in
particular, scripts can often be the glue that joines other software together,
and language like Python and Perl can do a lot of jobs normally associated with
compiled languages on modern machines, but there's still a place for compiled
code too.

I've started my relearning of Pascal, and it's coming back to me very quickly.
Hopefully by the end of winter (i.e. around September for those north of the
equator ;) ), I'll be able to write some decent code again in Pascal and get
some of those projects I've had on hold moving (and perhaps open source a
couple :) ).
