SCO licensed UNIX (I think it was SYSV V4.3) from AT&T, and interpreted the license agreement as if it were a transfer of ownership. As SCO saw the their paid UNIX cash cow shrinking because of Linux, they looked to other ways to generate revenues.
SCO believed that IBM contributed UNIX source code to linux. SCO then started shaking down Linux customers for a license fee and suing IBM, a company renowned for the number of attorneys they have on staff. Bad idea.
Long after SCO shipped their last SCO UNIX package, they were tied up in court until the company no longer existed.
