I don't do that much, but I find Spice works fine - I only use it for virual machines. Spice acts as a virtual device in the machine that hosts it and then you connect to it using a tunneled link.
As far as I know, it is a protocol built for virtual environments. Are you working with virtual hosts, or with bare metal?
