I have tried both vlc and mpv.  That is an interesting point you bring up.  The
machine is running an i3-4000M with a 2.90x4 CPU, but I don't know that it is
attempting to use them all or not.  I know there are some programs where you
can specify the number of cores to use on the command line but based on the
help output vlc does not appear to have an option to force it to use N cores.
