Trying to be a mobile-like environment is what I didn't like about Unity.  I
actually like the classic Gnome-style interface on a desktop PC.  I think it
works well for a PC.

I'm curious what you liked about Unity that seemed like a step forward from
Gnome?

yes..  I've actually seen some UI skins that look like LCARS..
