I am not a fan of D&D 4.0, but I don't think it was as bad as people claims it
was. If they had released it with other name, it would have been remembered as
an ok roleplaying game with heavy skirmishing mechanics. The game only became
unworkable once your adventures hit parangon tier (10+ lvl). After that point,
combats were decided in a couple of turns and everythign after that was a grind
to see how long it took the losers to die.

D&D 5 reminds me of Castles and Crusaders. The core mechanics are very basic
and feel like a reminiscence of the OSR, but resource and skill management are
New School. It works extremely well for megadungeon campaigns as long as no
character falls behind the rest of the group by a lot of XP.
