For HO, Model Power locos and box cars are/were more affordable but also
were often thought of as not being prototypical and of not having quality
drives.  At the time I am thinking of, Proto 2000 was still owned by
LifeLike, were affordable and, unlike MP, were more prototypical and had
better drives.

The last time I looked at Proto-2000 (or even 1000) prices, now that they
are owned by another company, they are not so affordable.

I figure if I ever get back into it and need to keep cost down, I can pass
off some of the less-prototypical stuff off as "railroad specific"
modifications or rebuilds.  :D
