I think the problem really stands out when they add a token minority character that exists only to be a token minority character.

For example, the gay cop in Blizzt is a great character because he is an active, integral part of the plot, and if you removed him the movie would not work as designed. At all. What defines this character is not the fact he is gay, it is the fact he is a burned out cop who is tough as nails.

But then you have characters like the gay couple in The Old Guard whose defining trait is being gay and who you could do away with without breaking the movie at all. They exist just so the producer can perform the required virtue signaling, and it shows.
