Ya, If you call a company to check on employment, they'll verify the person
worked there. I had one manager that told people to never list his home
number for a reference. A guy that left with short notice used our manager as
a reference, and our manager replied, "ya, I know that drunk. Is he still
drinking before work?" The employee in question did not drink, but it's not
a first impression you want to leave an HR person.
