The original mode of communication in ham radio, digital, can go much further
than voice...mainly because you don't need as much power to do so.
Digital modes include things such as Morse Code (CW, the original digital
mode), Packet (HF and VHF), D-Star and D-Rats, APRS, JT-65, PSK31, MT-63, and
more. For those who are "mic shy", and don't want to "talk", digital is the
mode for you. Your computer, and appropriate software, basically does all the
work for you, identifying your station, and transmitting your traffic.
