Hello,
I am not an amateur radio enthusiast but have a growing interest in the hobby.
Over the course of the last few months I've heard about methods where people
with commodore 64's and trs-80 machines used shortwave radio to transmit and
receive text and send messages back and forth with these machines. My first
thought was, 'okay you're pulling my leg.' But as I began to think about it,
the military does just that very thing when transmitting info to submarines
while they're deep under water.
Then I was watching a video on Lunduke's youtube channel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_HEdzaeq-A
He brought up amprnet to describe unorthodox (for today) methods of
tx/rx data. I knew about carrier pidgeons being used in Africa in the mid 2000s
So I did some digging and came across the organization ampr.org.
Going down that rabbit hole, the faq says this
How do I join the network?
Methods vary. These days, most AMPRNet participants run a Linux system as a
router having one or more radio ports, and perhaps a connection to their home
Internet equipment. Links may be Internet tunnels, medium or high-speed radio,
converted wireless access points, or a combination of these.
I'm curious, if one is using computer hardware and an internet connection, how
on earth is this communication via shortwave. I'm so confused by this.
