FCC APPOINTS FIRST FEMALE CHIEF TECH OFFICER
DON/ANCHOR: Our top story comes from Washington, D.C., where the
Federal Communications Commission is marking what its chairman
calls a historic appointment. Here's Andy Morrison, K9AWM, with
the details.
ANDY: The FCC has welcomed the first woman to serve as its Chief
Technology Officer, coordinating with the agency's Office of
Engineering and Technology, and advising Chairman Ajit Pai on
related issues.
Monisha Ghosh, a Fellow of the IEEE [pronounced: EYE TRIPLE E],
has expertise in wireless technologies where she has overseen
research both in academia and industry. Her new responsibilities
began on January 13th.
The agency called the appointment historic, and the FCC chairman
said he hoped she would serve as an example for young women
considering careers in STEM disciplines.

FCC COMMISSIONER CALLS FOR ITU'S REPLACEMENT
DON/ANCHOR: Also at the FCC, Commissioner Michael O'Rielly has said
that the future of global spectrum use might be better served by an
international body other than the ITU. He also questioned the value
of the World Radiocommunication Conference that is held every few
years to revise member nations' use of the spectrum.
Speaking before a committee of the United States Senate, O'Rielly
said a replacement for the ITU might be a body that resembles the
G7 organization, also known as the Group of Seven. Its members
include the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan,
and the U.K., the world's largest advanced economies. The ITU is a
body contained within the United Nations.
O'Rielly said his biggest concern was that under the ITU, the geopolitics
of certain nations could get in the way of harmonization of spectrum use.

NAVAJO CODE TALKER JOE VANDEVER DIES AT AGE 96
DON/ANCHOR: The ranks of American heroes are diminished once more, as
another Navajo Code Talker from the World War Two era, has died. Ralph
Squillace, KK6ITB, has his story.
RALPH: Joe Vandever Sr., one of the Navajo Code Talkers who served in
the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, has died in New Mexico. He
was among those whose tribal language gave rise to an unbreakable code
used during the war.
After enlisting in the Marines in 1943, he served in the Occupation of
Japan, the Occupation of China, Guam, Okinawa, and numerous other
locations. The National Museum of the American Indian in Washington,
D.C., notes that the Code Talkers' contributions in several important
wartime campaigns are credited with saving thousands of lives of
Americans, and United States allies.
Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez issued the following statement
after the announcement of his death: "The Navajo people have lost
another great warrior, who sacrificed more than we'll ever know to
defend our country. On behalf of the Navajo Nation, we offer our
prayers and heartfelt condolences to his children, and many other
loved ones."
Joe Vandever, who died Friday, January 31st, was 96. There are now
only a handful of Navajo Code Talkers remaining.
For Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm Ralph Squillace, KK6ITB.
