IP ADDRESS SALES BENEFIT ARISS BUT BRING CHANGE TO HAMNET DL

PAUL/ANCHOR: Our top story this week is about the impact of a recent
sale of IP addresses by the nonprofit Amateur Radio Digital
Communications. There are some winners, and there are also some
who'll face new challenges. Ed Durrant, DD5LP, picks that story up
for us.

ED: One of the items of great concern at the HAMNET conference taking
place on the 28th of September, in Passau, Germany, is the recent
unexpected sale of the upper portion of the AMPRNet address range,
that includes IP addresses that have been used in Germany's HAMNET
amateur microwave data network. Amazon Web Services recently purchased
one quarter of the IP version 4 address range for commercial use on the
internet. For DL HAMET, this means that all addresses customarily used
by participating amateurs must be relocated to another range. At the
conference in Passau, the IP coordination team will discuss the
transition that will have to happen in the wake of the reported $16.8
million US dollar sale by Amateur Radio Digital Communications. The
ARDC, which is a non-profit organization supporting radio experimentation,
says on its website that the sale of the estimated 4 million addresses
will help them generate funds for their philanthropic efforts. These
include supporting Ham Radio in space  with a recently announced,
sizeable contribution to the cost of the development and creation of
the "inter-operable communications system", including SSTV and HamTV-2
to be sent to the International Space Station, hopefully by years end,
and to ARISS's plans for the future Lunar Gateway initiative.

NORTH KOREA TESTING DIGITAL RADIO MONDIALE ON 80 METERS

PAUL/ANCHOR: Testing of a digital radio mode by North Korea could have
impact on some CW users on 80 meters. Jeremy Boot, G4NJH, has the
details.

JEREMY: In North Korea, where intermittent trials of Digital Radio
Mondiale, or DRM, have been conducted since 2012, testing has resumed,
according to a recent report by Radio World. The report notes that the
protocol is being used on 80 metres at 3.560 MHz, a frequency allocated
for amateur radio operators, and used by many as one of the international
QRP calling frequencies for CW. Radio World said it was unclear how long
the testing would continue, or whether it would evolve into regularly
scheduled services. The transmissions are being sent by Voice of Korea,
which is North Korea's international broadcasting service.

Other countries have also been making use of DRM, including India, where
All India Radio, the nation's public service broadcaster, adopted the
standard for the medium and shortwave part of the spectrum. Broadcasters
who have been turning to DRM for AM transmissions say they are
capitalizing on the mode's sound quality which approximates that of FM.

For Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm Jeremy Boot, G4NJH.

HURRICANE WATCH NET PREPARES FOR STORM ACTIVITY

PAUL/ANCHOR: The Hurricane Watch Net activated on Wednesday, September
18th, on 20 and 40 metres, as net manager Bobby Graves, KB5HAV, announced
that four storm systems were under observation. Bobby said the storm
uppermost in everyone's sights was Hurricane Humberto, which as of
midweek, was poised to have an impact on Bermuda. Bobby said the net's
activation plan could change, and ground-truth data supplied from those
in the affected area were a guide to operators' plan of action.

This is the latest information Newsline had as it went to production on
the night of September 19th. Please visit our Facebook and Twitter
