HONORING AMERICA's POWs and MIAs
NEIL/ANCHOR: If you're looking for a way to honor generations of American
military heroes - prisoners of war, and those missing in action - there's
a special event coming up, that will give you the opportunity. We hear
more from Jim Damron, N8TMW.
JIM D: National POW-MIA Recognition Day came into being in 1979, when
Congress and the U.S. president declared it a national day to remember
those in the military who never returned home from service. Eleven years
ago, amateur radio operators stepped in, and took the honor further,
activating the first special event station, keeping with the theme of
the day, which this year falls on September 20th. The station K4MIA/8 -
and a number of its sister stations - will be on the air on 40 meters.
Some of the sister stations include K4MIA/5 and K4MIA/7. Contacts can
also be made on low-earth orbit satellites and in digital modes. QSL
cards will be made available to those who have had valid contacts but
requests must include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
The website military.com notes that a Congressional Record Service report
counts 130,201 World War II service members who were put in prison; of
those, 14,072 died. The record also notes that 7,140 service members were
in prisons during the Korean War, and 2,701 of them died. There are other
conflicts, of course, and other figures. The K4MIA/8 special event honors
them all. Be listening.

RADIO SCOUTS COUNT DOWN WEEKS TO JAMBOREE
NEIL/ANCHOR: For radio scouts, it's an exciting time of year: Jamboree
season! Here's Bill Stearns, NE4RD, with a full report.
BILL: This week in radio scouting, we're less than two months away from
the world's largest annual scouting event, Jamboree on the Air, and
Jamboree on the Internet.
The event occurs the third full weekend in October, and this year, that
falls on the weekend of the 18th through the 20th. If you haven't
planned an official event, you still have time to do it! Contact your
local council, district, troop, or pack, and find out what their calendar
looks like that weekend, and see if you can find a compatible event, like
a Fall Camporee, and see if you can bring your portable station, and
demonstrate Amateur Radio, and get scouts on the air.
Registration is now open on the jotajoti.info website for the
international effort for the event. The process does require you to
have a scout.org account, which is easy to sign up for one, during your
registration. However, there is a lack of detail being collected that
would be useful to our U.S. radio scouters. So, the U.S., on the
k2bsa.net website, have also opened a registration form for U.S.
stations, to collect more detailed information about your event. We're
working on displaying some that information on the website, so others
looking to find an event in the US can do so easily.
For more information on this and radio scouting, please visit our website
at k2bsa.net.

IN TENNESSEE, A HAMFEST HOSTS TWO CONVENTIONS
NEIL/ANCHOR: Hams are preparing to gather in Tennessee next month for a
hamfest, and two conventions, all rolled into one. Stephen Kinford, N8WB,
has details.
STEPHEN: The gathering of amateur radio operators in the city of East
Ridge, Tennessee, is expected to be a formidable one, especially since
it's three events in one: Hamfest Chattanooga 2019, the ARRL Delta
Division Convention, and the 2019 Tennessee State D-STAR Convention.
It will all be taking place at the Camp Jordan Arena on Friday, October
18th, and Saturday, October 19th. The D-STAR gathering will include a
"Meet and Greet" banquet on that Friday at a local landmark, Wally's
Restaurant.
The weekend's guests include Howard Michel {pronounced: MICKEL}, the
chief executive officer of the ARRL, as well as Dan Henderson, N1ND,
ARRL regulatory information manager, and David A Norris, K5UZ, director
of the ARRL's Delta Division.
Gary Ownsby, AK4ZX, the hamfest chairman, noted that the hamfest's booth
at Huntsville was a big success, and should generate excitement for the
gathering in just a few weeks.
