SILENT KEY: DXER, CONTESTER ANANTH PAI VU2PAI
PAUL/ANCHOR: He was known, in some circles, as "India's ham radio
ambassador." Ananth (ON-ONTH) Pai (PIE) VU2PAI, a contester, DXer, and
DXpeditioner, became a Silent Key on the 14th of July. He had served on
the Governing Council of the Amateur Radio Society of India, and was a
member of the Mangalore Amateur Radio Club. He had been a part of the
VU4CB, VU7AG, 8Q7KP expeditions ,and was active in various modes on all
the HF bands from 160 through 6 meters. He was also an avid collector of
the postage stamps that often accompanied QSL cards. Ananth Pai, who died
of a heart attack while on a business trip, was 47.

MORE WAYS TO GET IN ON MOONWALK ANNIVERSARY ACTION
PAUL/ANCHOR: In case you think you missed it, the world is still
celebrating the 50th anniversary of history's first moonwalk. Dave
Parks, WB8ODF, tells us more ways you can get in on the action here
on Earth.
DAVE: Call it moon madness. Even if you weren't on the air or even on
the planet itself 50 years ago when astronauts walked on the moon, you
can make up for lost time now. You've already heard about K2M being on
the air through July 24th, with the Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club
honoring those who built the Lunar Excursion Module on Long Island --
but there's a virtual galaxy of other stations to work. Elsewhere on
Long Island, the Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club is operating
K2CAM at the Cradle of Aviation Museum through the 24th of July. In
West Chester Ohio, the Midwest VHF/UHF Society will operate N8A until
the 24th of July, and the Ohio Amateur Radio Club is operating N1A
honoring Ohio's own native Neil Armstrong until the 28th of July. In
the UK, the Leicester {pronounced LESTER} Radio Society will operate on
selected days through the 28th of July, with the call sign GB5EHL for
"Eagle Has Landed." Hams in the Netherlands will be honoring the moon
landing until the 2nd of August with PA11APOLLO. NASA clubs get in on
the moment too. Although hams at the Kennedy Space Center conclude the
operation of WB4ICJ on the 20th of July, you can still work N4A, operated
by the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center Amateur Radio Club until July
25th.
For Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm Dave Parks, WB8ODF.
PAUL/ANCHOR: As the anniversary celebrations come to an end, be listening
as well for NB6GC, the special event station of the USS Hornet Amateur
Radio Club. Club memberes are marking the date that the USS Hornet
recovered the Apollo 11 team after splashdown on the 24th of July, 1969.
Listen for them on the bands on the 20th and 21st of July, but most
especially on the 24th.

ARIZONA CW PRACTICE NET SEEKS NEWCOMERS
PAUL/ANCHOR: Even if your code isn't quite up to speed, you might want
to try this 1-year-old CW practice net, which is small, informal, and
friendly. Here's Kevin Trotman, N5PRE.
KEVIN: The Kingman CW Practice Net has been meeting on the air for a
little more than a year, and operates with the call sign of the Kingman
CW Operators Club, K7KGM. Although it's still fairly young, the net's
operation celebrates what is old and time-honored in amateur radio:
hand-keyed Morse Code, the kind often created with the help of home-brewed
bugs, paddles, and straight keys. The club itself is a small one that
meets on the first Monday of each month in Kingman, Arizona, but the real
action happens when the net gets on the air on 40 meters.
Wyatt Cornwall, KF7YHB, who is net control, told Newsline: {quote} "The
goal is to promote interest in Morse Code, and to help both old and new
amateur radio operators develop their CW skills." {endquote} Wyatt said
that although hams on the net can generally send at least 10 words per
minute or faster, the net will QRS for anyone. He told Newsline: "After
all, we all had to start at the beginning!" {endquote} Wyatt himself
noted he got his ticket in 2012, and with the help of a friend, soon got
his code up to speed. He said there is even discussion of possibly
starting a net for hams whose code has yet to get up to speed.
Listen for them at 7.120 at 0200 UTC on Thursdays - or 7 p.m. Wednesdays,
local time.
For Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm Kevin Trotman, N5PRE.
