PORTUGUESE FREEDOM DAY NOT FREE FROM CHALLENGES ON BANDS
JIM/ANCHOR: In Portugal, the nation's Freedom Day celebration brought
noises of joy -- but hams marking the day on the air encountered other
noises, as we hear from Jeremy Boot, G4NJH.
JEREMY: The Association of Amateurs of the Lisbon Region commemorated
Portugal's Freedom Day on the 25th of April, with operations that were
active from the 23rd to the 27th of the month. The national holiday
marked the 45th anniversary of the nation's coup, and the first free
elections that followed a year later. Visitors, including school groups,
got to see an exhibit of military, amateur and CB radios dating to the
1970s. According to the group's president Antonio Viegas, CT2IXQ.
making contacts proved to be challenging on 40 and 20 metres for special
event station CS25MFA. He told Newsline, however, that CB radio operators
joined in the on-air activity on Channel 16. and everyone together logged
as many contacts as they were able. Those who were able to make contact
with the special event station will receive a commemorative QSL card.
For Amateur Radio Newsline, this is Jeremy Boot. G4NJH.

KICKER: CAMPING IT UP ON THE AIR IN FINLAND
JIM/ANCHOR: Finally, while we're on the subject of young hams, let's end
our report with this story about another group of youthful radio
enthusiasts -- youngsters who met up for some fun on the frequencies in
Finland. Here's Ed Durrant, DD5LP.
ED: The weekend of April 19th through the 22nd wasn't just Easter Weekend:
For some 40 or so youngsters in Europe, it was camp weekend too.
Young radio amateurs in Scandinavia, celebrated friendship, fox hunting,
and other radio activities, during the Nordics on the Air event, that
took place in Finland that weekend, as a subregional camp of the
Youngsters on the Air program. The three days were a blend of
intercultural activities, as well as amateur radio direction finding,
and a chance to operate from Finland's YOTA station, OH2YOTA. According
to their blog, they were also on the lookout for snakes and mosquitoes
at the campsite, but, this being Finland, there was also a sauna. On the
third day, the youngsters were challenged to fashion straight keys, bugs,
and sweepers utilising bananas, apples, or some other sorts of fruit,
and then attempt to send CW.
All in all, a fruitful time.
For Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm Ed Durrant, DD5LP.
