Thelma Denny doesn't know life without the ABC.

Now 84, the resident of Apple Tree Creek near Bundaberg, was born six
years after radio announcer Conrad Charlton announced to the country:
"This is the Australian Broadcasting Commission."

As a young girl, Thelma remembers her father "always had the radio
on", especially for the cricket or her mother's favourite long-running
  radio drama Blue Hills.

These days the radio is her comfort and companion, especially since her
husband, Ronald, died in 2016, two days after their 58th wedding
  anniversary.

Still living independently, the great-grandmother loves nothing more
than to unwind with Phillip Adams talking from her bedside table each
  weeknight as she falls asleep.

Look back at Australian milestones and moments, plus a look to the
future as we celebrate this major anniversary together.

But ABC radio is also her lifeline, so when her radio went on the
blink, Thelma was at a loss.

"That's been the problem, I can't get an update on the weather," she
  said.

"If there is a storm on, I have to turn off the television and the
computer which has the weather bureau site."

In times of emergency, it's recommended battery-powered radios are part
of home emergency kits, with power outages, poor internet and phone
coverage meaning many regional areas' only source of information is the
  radio.

"The battery-powered radio is the most important thing," Thelma
    said.

When Thelma met David

For Thelma, it's the little things that count and little did she know a
small gesture from a fellow radio fan would make a big impact on her
  life.

David Facer gifted a radio to Thelma Denny when he heard she was
missing out on local news.(ABC Wide Bay: Brad Marsellos)

Filling out an ABC newsletter feedback form, Thelma mentioned having
issues with her radio and the anonymous feedback was mentioned on air
on ABC Wide Bay earlier this month.

  David Facer's ears pricked up.

In a case of good detective work, he tracked down Thelma and presented
  her with a new radio.

"I'm definitely a radio fan," David said.

"It's an instant access to friendly voices that are just part of
    your family.

"To keep abreast of weather and everything like that, it's quite
  important."

David Facer believes radio can help those living alone feel less
  isolated.(ABC Wide Bay: Brad Marsellos)

The decline in daily regional newspapers and commercial radio not being
viable in more remote areas often means the ABC or community radio is
the only option outside major centres.

David runs a mental health organisation in the Wide Bay, so he is
acutely aware of the benefits a familiar voice offers to those who feel
  isolated.

"The huge benefit for people, not just at the moment when there has
been a lot of isolation, is a feeling of having a friend they can
  listen to.

"There is also the option of making contact, through text message or
whatever, they can feel part of something and that feeling of
  connection.

"It's a good time, you are keeping that connection and learning things,
it's brilliant for your mental health."

Radio still vital in regional Queensland

Thelma is a master of the written word and a detective of sorts
  herself.

She has spent years researching the military history of the Childers
  area.

In a world of social media, streaming services, audio and video on
demand, the trusty battery-operated radio remains Thelma's bedside
  companion.

"I don't know anything about [new technology]," she laughs. "They
    are too fancy for me."

With her new radio tuned in, she's happily back in the loop for local
  news and information.
