A judge has said he struggles to, in part, understand the explanation
of a supermarket worker who stole grocery items nearly every shift for
two years, totalling $36,000.
The man, who cannot be named, was employed at a Blenheim supermarket at
the time of the offending and had been working there for about two
years when he started to take advantage of his early shifts.
Before the store opened, he would take a large rubbish bag and walk
around the store filling the bag with items from the shelves, a police
summary of facts said.
He would leave the bag at a rear exit until he was able to transfer it
to his car.

He took about a dozen items every day he was at work, worth a weekly
total of $350 on average, between 2018 and 2020, the summary said.
Store security was alerted when he deactivated the alarms earlier than
expected on September 12, 2020.
The security officer checked the security cameras and saw the man
loading items into his car.
They alerted the owners of the store, who checked the cameras from home
The man was sentenced on six charges of theft by a person in a special
relationship at the Blenheim District Court.

The man was sentenced on six charges of theft by a person in a special
relationship at the Blenheim District Court.
When questioned by police, the man admitted stealing items and said he
had been doing it for about two years.
The man admitted six charges of theft by a person in a special
relationship at the Blenheim District Court in October last year. He
was sentenced on those charges on Monday.
Judge Gary Barkle said the estimated loss was approximately $36,000,
but the exact number would “never be known”.
The man's lawyer, Philip Watson, said the man had refinanced his house
in order to pay back the money. The housing market had helped him with
the equity, Watson said.
“Instead of losing the family home, he has got employment. The bank he
was with disowned him, he went to a mortgage broker and got a higher
loan,” he said.
Watson said a breakdown of communication with his wife was what lead to
offending, as the man thought they barely had any money left over at
the end of week.
“It was the stress. They weren't communicating about what was leftover.
He thought he had $60,” Watson said.
Watson said his wife actually had money leftover at the end of the
week.
He said the man had since gained employment with a winery in Blenheim,
and was getting his life back on track.
Judge Barkle said the offending was a gross breach of trust.
“I struggle, to some degree, with the explanation,” Judge Barkle said.
Despite the man having no prior convictions, the cumulative nature of
the offending meant he lost “a lot of the credit” for his clean record.
“It happened for two years, almost daily. There must have been 500 to
600 occasions where he took who knows what,” Judge Barkle said.
He said it “seemed apparent” once he started, he could not stop.
“The number is only an estimate, it got addictive, it’s hideous,” Judge
Barkle said.
The court heard the offending had been “earth-shattering” for the man’s
family.
“Every indication is that his wife had no idea what was taking place,”
Judge Barkle said.
“His rationalisation was, so he could put food on his table for two
children. Everyone must live within their means. Families who live on
much less, do so successfully.”
Judge Barkle sentenced the man to six months’ home detention and 175
hours community. He was ordered to pay reparation of $36,000, which was
in a trust ready to be paid.
The man’s pastor, and eldest child had written a letter to the court
arguing the man should be granted permanent name suppression, which
Judge Barkle granted.
