Australasia’s last remaining bottle house has sprung a leak, and those
entrusted with its care are looking for a way to seal the structure,
which is made of 18,000 bottles, so it can re-open to the public.

The 30-year-old ‘big bottle’ sits alongside the new [58]Switzers Museum
in the tiny northern Southland town of Waikaia.

But the roof is leaking, and museum committee chairwoman Mairi Dickson
said a refurbishment of the bottle may need to include some kind of way
to seal the building, while still allowing visitors to see it, and
still climb up the stairwell inside to the top.

“A huge condom, that’s what we need,’’ she joked.

“There must be some kind of product out there we could use to seal the
bottles and the mortar holding them together, but if there is, we
haven’t found one,’’ she said.

The Switzers Museum committee uplifted $10,000 in funding to refurbish
the bottlehouse at an Ardlussa Community Board meeting on Tuesday.

The rain was leaking in through the roof and running down the steel
structure, where it was slowly rotting part of the floor.

“We’re hoping to get a very dry summer to dry it out, because last year
there wasn’t a week when we didn’t have some rain. We’ll start on
redevelopment when it’s dry enough to get some scaffolding up and find
the leak.’’

Carpet would be replaced, the outside would be cleaned and new display
cases would be put inside, in keeping with the museum next door.

The bottle house had been closed since the old Coronation Hall, which
housed the town’s former museum, was [63]demolished in 2015.

The Waikaia community had raised $1.7 million over thirty years to
rebuild their Switzers Museum, Mairi Dickson takes us on a tour before
the official opening.

The Switzers Museum committee fundraised $1.7m and opened the new
museum in December 2018.

The bottle was built about 30 years ago, after some Waikaia locals
visited one in Tewantin, Australia, and decided to build one at home as
a tourist attraction.

“It doesn’t have any significant meaning to Waikaia, but the bottle
house really is quite a tourist attraction and a lot of people come
here to see it, so it will be great to get it open again.’’ Dickson
said.
