  While typewriters might seem like a relic of the past for most Mainers,
  they are still around, and a Winthrop man is busy keeping them typing
  away."Something comforting about this typing. I don’t know what it is,
  but it does it for me,” typewriter repairman Pat Costigan said.There is
  rarely a day that goes by where Costigan does not get the chance to sit
  down and tap out a few lines on an old typewriter.In a time when most
  people type on a cellphone or computer keyboard, Costigan said
  customers keep calling him.“All the time. I get it almost every day. We
  get a call from somebody or an email, ‘Do you repair typewriters
  still?’ And, ah, yeah, we do,” Costigan said.Costigan has been fixing
  typewriters since 1976. That is when he joined his father’s typewriter
  sales and service shop. Back then, it bustled with business."We had the
  state contract for cleaning manual typewriters, so every day you were
  doing that,” Costigan said.Today, repairing typewriters is part
  profession and part hobby for Costigan. He said typewriter repairs make
  up about 20% of his machine repair company, Cosco Technologies.It is
  not just tinkering with the old machines he enjoys. He also loves the
  stories behind the typewriters, from knowing who owned it to where it
  was found. He loves hearing them all.“I enjoy them. I enjoy the people,
  their stories. They always love to just take a few minutes to talk.
  People treasure them. I'll get thank you notes from people, and they'll
  always type them,” Costigan said.He said there is something special
  about an antique typewriter."It's like an old friend, nostalgia, brings
  back memories,” Costigan said.As long as someone continues to make
  parts for the old typewriters, he will keep fixing them.“It's something
  very familiar to me and to others. That's part of the typing experience
  and the bell. Always important, always make sure the bell is working,”
