Final report for OCC 4 2024 edition. The plucky iMac did chug
along just fine, and I'm proud of it. Nothing spectacular there,
as the heat limited my usage to it and the thin client (aka the
slow computer challenge). I did have to pop into the virtual
desktop a couple times over the week to take care of bills and
other life stuffs. The modern web is pretty hostile to the old
iron of yesteryear. Luckily, once you take the offramp and enjoy
the rest of the information superhighway, smolnet, the island of
forgotten tech is still welcoming if not booming.
I've certainly enjoyed this OCC more than the year where I limited
myself to roughly 33.6k modem speeds (38400), which forced text
mode only usage. Including the slow computer (old by most
standards, slow by more), which is more of my solarpunk, low
energy, low heat terminal the event was a lot of fun. I especially
enjoyed quake (and a little q2) with the regulars of OCC.
Definitely would do again, and hopefully we can occasionally have
some fun throughout the year too. I might even be able to mumble a
bit on a fancy machine - what luxury!
In the end, learning some new tricks and tips coping with
old/slow/forgotten computers continues to challenge and delight. I
am especially happy with the community hanging out on irc and
apologize that I didn't take advantage of the forum so much this
year. There's always next year though.
