auzymoto, tomasino, and I think someone else that I can't
locate now were phlogging a bit about kindles and e-ink
displays[1][2]. I use my Kindle touch too much to want
to modify it from stock, but I do have an old 3rd-gen
"Kindle Keyboard" that I got from a thrift store...
I looked into the "rooting" of this device. I have to say,
it reminds me of the process for installing Cyanogenmod
back in the day on an android phone; loads of instructions
buried in moutains of disorganized forum posts with files
strewn about in no particular order. Maybe I need to search
more, I don't know. While I'm grateful that somone went to
the trouble of documenting everything, I curse the forum
format and its many abuses.
I love e-ink for reading, but as others have noted, it's
pretty slow for other uses. Still, it might be really,
really nice for gopher, which is mostly reading. I think
it might be worth it to give the root a try, just for that.
Though, I suppose I could first try a gopher proxy through
the built-in web browser, to see if that satisfies things.
I love auzymoto's idea of an e-ink laptop. I did a little
tiny bit of googling and found a potential candidate in the
Onyx Boox Typewriter. It's just a prototype, but they did
show it to some press apparently[3]. Boy, that would be
awesome.
