Thanks Paul and Winston!

I found info at answers.ms about two updates to fix Win update. I applied
them and Searching for Updates completed almost instantly - offering 220
updates. This isn't gonna work, I said to myself. I was right - I stopped
update after about 30 were installed because I was leaving the house. Upon
return, the machine wouldn't boot and all the various repair options
failed.

So...I will do the recovery partition dance again to start fresh and try
your suggestions.
