I’m posting this from Google Groups because Ike been offline for a week and a
half.

The phone company, in its questionable wisdom, decided to upgrade their modem,
so a worker stopped by about ten days ago, swapped out the old modem,
configured the new one, then promptly left, declaring success.

Of course, everything’s broken now. The primary problem is the new modem is
no longer forwarding any ports to my router, so nothing can get in or out. I
attempted to set up some port forwarding myself, but the phone company won’t
give me the admin
password, so there’s not a lot I can do.

I called the phone company and complained, and they sent out another installer.
He reset and reconfigured the modem (because that’s all the installers know
how to do) and left. Of course, that resolved nothing because that wasn’t the
problem. Called
again, got another installer, explained that I needed the modem DMZed to my
router. Since he didn’t know what that meant, he called in to the office and
said he’d return with a network engineer.

The network engineer spent three hours here yesterday and got everything
resolved *except* the port forwarding. He couldn’t get DMZ working, and the
modem doesn’t have enough port forwarding slots for all the ports I wanted
forwarded. So he said he’
d go back to the office and try to figure it out. Since today’s Saturday, I
don’t expect him back before Monday.

Whatever happened to "If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it"?
