Yep I'll quote some FTN kludge lines so you can see what is being passed on
the FTN side of things. These are usually hidden from view but it shows you
some of the stuff that comes across.

So in this case the FTN <> News gateway is at 3:770/3 and that in turn talks
to news.bbs.nz to send/recieve the news group content etc.

Well there's still quite a bit of activity in some groups. Some are full of
spam while other seem to be quite good (like this one :)) so your mileage
varies. It's not however as mad as it was in the 90s for volumes, especially
if you just look at text only newsgroups and ignore any binary stuff. In my
case I only carry text only newsgroups and filter the others out. Then it's
just down to which newsgroups a BBS wants to carry that dictates the amount
of FTN style gated packets they want to / will receive per day.
