While I do write all of my guides for free, it does take a lot of time and
effort to put them together. If you're feeling generous and want to show your
appreciation, I am gladly accepting donations. I don't know exactly what the
donations will be used for, but just know that you would definitely be helping
me make more quality FAQs! Even the smallest donation amounts are appreciated,
and are a great way to say how much you appreciate the work I do. If you do
decide you'd like to donate, please send the donations through PayPal at the
e-mail address listed below. Thank you so very much for considering this!!

By the way, this is also my contact e-mail, so if you want to contribute
something to this or any of my other FAQs, or have a question to ask about one
of them, go ahead and use this e-mail.

Welcome to another FAQ of mine. This one covers the SMS game PGA Tour Golf.
Much as you would expect, this another one of your typical video games based on
the world-popular sport of golf.
..
That's all I have to say on this game. Enjoy.

--------
Controls
--------
- D-Pad : Move marker
- 1 Button : Open up the pause menu (yes, seriously)
- 2 Button : Confirm choices
- Pause/Start: N/A
-----------------
Modes of the Game
-----------------
After the title screen, there are eight options given to you:
- Practice Round, which is just a generalized game of golf.
- Enter a Tournament, which gives you several sequential games of golf in
which your primary goal is to do better than everyone else, thereby earning
you some money. It is worth noting that this money does you no particular
good.
- Visit the Driving Range, in which you basically just attempt to improve your
shots that are not on the putting green. Since this is just general shooting
of golf balls, you can use the details in the generalized gameplay section
below for that.
- Practice Your Putting, a mode in which you ... well, putt. Since this is
just putting, you can use the details in the generalized gameplay section
below for that.
- Change View Options, where you can opt to turn on or off advice for the
holes, the overhead view, the 3D putting view, and the ball lie. All of
these are helpful, though I will note that, in my many experiences with
several versions of this game, turning off hole advice will really, really
help. Of course, that's just me - the game hung there each time.
- Load a Saved Game, which is obvious.
- Save Current Game; also obvious.
- Reset All Game Details, which basically returns the current state of your
game to like it would be had you just started.
--------------------
Generalized Gameplay
--------------------
I know I'm being OCD about this, but I had the game crash on me several times
when opting to use the hole advice option. You may want to turn this option off
in the "Change View Options" menu if you have this problem.
When you first begin an actual game, you'll first pick one of the number of
players, details about them (human/computer, name, level), then the course.
When you begin a hole, you will obtain various information on the hole. This
begins with the overhead map (as applicable), player name, hole number,
distance to the hole, then the par for the hole. Press "2" to continue.
Here, you can see the ball's lay (as applicable), and enter the pause menu
with "1" for a number of other options:
- Overhead view
- Scores
- Resume the game
- Return to shop/tent (menu for practice and tournaments, respectively)
- Go to hole (warp to a particular hole)
- Go to course (opt for a different course)
- Chip shot (opt for this shot to lower distance for shots)
- Punch shot (opt for this shot to increase distance for shots)
- Normal shot (opt for this to get a normal shot)
- Turn on/off music
- Instant replay
- Take a Mulligan (undo the previous shot)
- Pick up ball (give up on the hole and take a 12-stroke-based score)
- See ball lie
Configure your options as needed (take particular note of the "shots"). Once
you are ready, you want to proceed by noting the other info outside the pause
menu - wind speed (relative to you), hole number, par, stroke number, distance
to hole, and shot distance of your club. (Note that the wind speed will always
be changing, so you can wait around until it is good for you.)
Then begin by using Up/Down on the D-Pad to choose a golf club. Some data on
each is below. Note that the maximum is given at 100% power on the power meter,
beyond which the power is unstable; the minimum is only tentative and based on
my fastest pressings of the 2 Button.

Also, use Left/Right on the D-Pad to move the "+" cursor on the screen in the
direction you want to go; the flag at the top marks the direction in which the
hole is.
Once you're ready, press "2" again to start filling the power meter, which is
the graduated green meter at the right. You'll want to get the first press of
"2" after the meter starts to be as close to the desired percentage of power
for the appropriate distance - for example, if have 45 yards to go and are
using the 9 Iron, you want to use 50% of your power. The first press "2" after
the meter starts sets the power.
The second, as the meter goes down, will influence the direction you go. The
closer the shot is to the line to the line to the right of the 25% line is a
"baseline". If the second press of "2" is right on it, the shot goes straight.
If it is to the right, the ball goes right; to the left, the ball goes left.
Additionally, note that going over 100% on the power tends to increase the
effect of this. Press "2" again to set this "hook/slice" idea, then the shot
will be taken.
This generally will repeat for a bit until you reach the green near the hole.
It gets a bit more specialized there. You'll begin with a 3D graphing of the
putting green's terrain, which can be rotated with Left/Right on the D-Pad.
Press "2" to continue. Beyond this, though, it is much like a normal shot.
Your main goal is to get the ball into the hole now.
There are usually eighteen holes played throughout the course of a single
match, and in a way similar to this. Also note that, in a hole, if you go
over 12 shots, you automatically have to go to the next hole. Your score for
the hole will be a positive (12 - par).
---------------
Scoring Details
---------------
Each given hole will have a set "par" on it. The par is the number of shots it
ideally takes to finish a hole. If you go under this, you earn points (your
score is negative, but that's good), and if you go over, you lose points (you
gain positive points). Hitting exactly par neither hurts or helps you.
The number of shots you take can also be affected by two other things - water
hazards and out-of-bounds area. Both are considered out-of-bounds. This bad
shot will count against you, and you'll be penalized an additional shot. For
example, if you hit the water on your first shot, consider the next shot you
take your third and not the second.
At the end of the hole, the number of shots you take, minus the par, is your
score. If such is positive, you went over (bogey); if negative, you did good by
going under (birdie, eagle, albatross). And, of course, par is neither good or
bad.
For the purposes of this game, you'll be using basic stroke play rules. That is
to say, whoever has the better score at the end of eighteen holes wins. The
only reason I mention this is that some use a win-loss basis rather than an
overall score, and this is just to remove confusion.
To the curious, the relatively official names for various shots:
O----------------O-----------------O
| Name of Shot | Score Changes |
O----------------O-----------------O
| Hole-in-One | (Par) - 1 |
| Albatross | -3 |
| Eagle | -2 |
| Birdie | -1 |
| Par | ±0 |
| Bogey | +1 |
| Double Bogey | +2 |
| Triple Bogey | +3 |
