THE BEGINNING-----------------------------------------------------------------
You begin the game as MANJI MARU in SHIRAKAWA Village in the Province
of HIDA in feudal JIPANG(Japan).
After the opening cinemas, once you gain control of MANJI, walk upstairs
and search the window. Once you've escaped, enter the building in front
of you. Open the chest and speak to each of the 3 children and the dog
who will join you.
Exit and talk to to each of the children guarding the gate. Now leave
the village and head West then South to the large City of Mount TAKA.
Enter the building located at the top right of the city. On the second
floor, speak to the man(TAIKUUN) at the bottom middle of the room. Now
enter the building at the top left of the city. Go up to the second
floor and sit on MANJI seat near the bottom middle window.
DARK ORCHID #1--------------------------------------------------------
Once you've regained control of MANJI, leave the city. You're now free
to explore the region.
East is the Village of USHIKUBI.
South East is a TENGU NO IORI(Tengu Retreat).
You'll recieve one new spell from each TENGU RETREAT. This one will
give you RAIKOU, -a Lightning Spell. It will target all the enemies in
a fight and is good against enemies like the yellow flower monsters in
this area.
To make it easier, you should probably power up for now. Gain a few
levels and try to buy the best equipment from USHIKUBI. Once you're
powerful enough, head north across the bridge near USHIKUBI.
To the North West is another TENGU RETREAT where you'll recieve
WAKAKUSA, -a Healing Spell. East from there you'll find a small
building(SUMIYAKI).
You can Rest but not Save here.
To the South you'll find a Cave that is the first dungeon -RIYOUMEN
KUTSU(Riyoumen Cave of Agony). The Boss is pretty easy and since you
don't lose anything from dying, you might as well venture in as far as
you can as soon as you get here.
On the second floor you'll find chests containing a Heal Item and 56
Yen. On the third floor you'll face the first of the three Brothers Of
Death: King TSUNO.
BOSS: King TSUNO
Once you kill him, he'll come back to life and you'll have to defeat
him a second time. I beat TSUNO on Level 7.
After saving your Mother, you return home. She tells you about the
legend of the evil DARK ORCHIDS and of the Legendary SHINOYUSHA Warriors
that defeated them. Each used a special sword in which their spirits
still preside.
She then gives you your family's sword, the KATAMI NO KEN(Memento Sword)
and suit of armor(both are auto-equiped).
Leave and head to the boarder crossing at the South West corner of the
region. Go through to the next area.
You'll see UMASE Village to the Southeast. You'll probably want to buy
new armor here. Part way South and West is a TENGU RETREAT that gives
you KAGEROU, -which lowers one group of enemies' hit percentages.
There is also another TENGU RETREAT to the South East. Here you'll
recieve HAGOROMO, -a Teleport Spell that warps you to any Village within
a Province.
South West is the next dungeon: JIYOUMON Cave. Here you'll face the
second Brother Of Death: King TSUME.
BOSS: King TSUME
I beat TSUME on Level 9. After you've defeated him, continue through
and Exit the Cave.
You will emerge in the Province of OWARI.
On the right you'll find TAIKUUN and his henchmen turned to stone.
Nearby to the West and slightly South is the City of INUYAMA. Here
you'll meet KABUKI DANJIRO. Buy new Equipment as well as an Item
that costs 8 Yen and is not Equipment(MISODANGO).
To the South is the HEBI SENNIN(Snake Hermit) Cave with a sign
in front of it. Enter, speak to the Old Man, and exit. Re-enter right
away. The Old Man will jump around, talk to you and give you the
KOI NO MIMI KAGI(Love Earpick).
East from here is the City of NAGASHI. You can heal here either by
talking to someone inside the Castle or by walking to the edge of the
pier in the Castle's pool.
Just North of NAGASHI you'll see a red archway, which leads to the
AKIBAYAMA Waterfall. Inside, use the Item(MINODANGO) that you bought
for 8 Yen in INUYAMA on the small grey statue next to the waterfall.
A passage will open up. Inside there is a pool that heals you and a
chest with another MINODANGO(which you no longer need). Continue
through, along the way there is a chest with a Warp Item.
When you make it out of the passage way, you'll see the Village of
FUKUSHIMA. West you'll find a Cave in a clearing, and past it is a
TENGU RETREAT that gives you ONIBI, -a Fire Attack Spell that damages
one enemy.
Make sure that you have the sword and armor that your Mother gave you
in your possesion(they don't need to be equiped). Enter the Cave in the
clearing(Umbrella Rock Hermit Cave) and speak to the Old Man inside.
Answer YES -default command, to his questions.
He'll give you a painting of a Boat. Now go to FUKUSHIMA and use the
painting of the Boat on the small statue near the water like the one
near the waterfall in AKIBAYAMA.
The Boat will become real and you can now use it to sail to the Tower
of the sunken BENTEN Castle, in the middle of the lake. Make your way
through the tower until you reach someone guarding a door. This is the
third Brother Of Death: King KIBA.
BOSS: King KIBA
After defeating KIBA, use the Item(LOVE EARPICK) that you recieved from
the Old Man in the Cave south of INUYAMA.
Now speak to the Queen and grab the chests to the lower right. Try
to remember the Item(JIYOUDO NO BIWA/Jiyoudo Loquat) that you recieve
from a chest in which music plays when you open it.
Leave and head far South from INUYAMA to the large Skull
Fortress: KIKOTSU JIYOU(Kikotsu Castle).
Use the JIYOUDO LOQUAT on the door, them make your way through the
Fortress. You will face each of the last 3 Bosses(TSUNO, TSUME and
KIBA) on the way up.
At the top you'll face a large skeletal Boss that appears to form out
of the remains of the 3 defeated Bosses.
BOSS: Death SHOGUN
After defeating the Boss you'll recieve the first Spirit Sword which
contains the soul of one of your ancestors: HOUSUIN BENI MARU.
Return to the city in the Province of HIDA that has the large Red
DARK ORCHID and walk into the bottom middle of it.
After it's destroyed you'll learn your first Technique: BENI MARU GIRI,
-an attack that damages all enemies.
DARK ORCHID #2--------------------------------------------------------
Go back to INUYAMA in OWARI. Head slightly South and to the West.
The Vines that blocked your path are gone and you can proceed to
the Village of SUZUKA, through to the Province of ISE.
As soon as you enter SUZUKA, KABUKI will appear and ask to join you.
After he does, continue through and exit the Village.
Head West to the Village of IGA. As soon as you enter, KABUKI's
rival KIKUGORO "The Pink Typhoon" will appear and taunt you.
After he leaves, move the pillar at the left of the Equipment Shop.
Enter the passage way that is revealed.
Open the chest at the end of the passage to the right to recieve a the
HOUGA Spell, -which tells you the number of Chests in an area. Go up the
stairs and speak to the Lady who'll give you the ISHIKAWA KEY.
If you take the other stairs in the secret passage, you'll come to
the real Equipment Shop.
Leave and head South to MATSUSAKA Village, which has the large green
building.
Continue South along the path to the ISE JINGOU(Shrine) where the next
DARK ORCHID is found. Walk through and continue South to the coastal
Village of SHIMA.
In SHIMA on the shore there is a building with a locked door next to the
docks. Use the ISHIKAWA KEY that you recieved in IGA to open the door.
Go onto to the docks and search the line in the middle, second from the
end to recieve the TENSHIYOU NO FUE(Tenshiyou Flute).
Use the TENSHIYOU FLUTE while standing on the Platform outside of the
Village to summon a Flying Saucer. The Saucer will transport you from
one platform to another.
There are 6 Platforms that you can transfer to and from-
SHIMA: -Village with the docks.
MATSUSAKA: -Village with the large green building.
South of SHIMA: -leads to next Province.
AKAME: -Western Village with people tangled in Vines.
NARA: -City at the Northwest corner of ISE. Next to a Temple(MIYOUIN)
NEGORO Tomb: -Cave on a Northern island.
Go to the NEGORO Tomb. Inside there are upside down KATAKANA characters
on the floors of each room of the first floor of the maze. At the end
of the floor there is a password locked energy barrier.
*The password is each character in order, from the entrance to barrier.
If you aren't familiar with KATAKANA(phonetical Japanese "alphabet"),
and the pic below isn't helping you, -a translated table should be easy
to find on the internet, or you can spend a few dollars on a paperback
Kanji-English/English Kanji dictionary.
Failing this, remember- the characters are UPSIDE DOWN, and in order,
the quickest route from the entrance stairs to the barrier with the
password lock.
The 8 characters are-

KI KU GO RO U E RA I
This roughly translates to- "KIKUGORO is superior".
Continue down to the next floor until you come to another energy
barrier. Enter the same password again. Keep going through, opening
up the energy barriers with same password as you encounter them.
Go down the stairs behind the last barrier. On this floor you'll find
an Old Man locked behind a gate.
Continue through until you find KIKUGORO. After speaking to him, you'll
fight a flower monster.
BOSS: HANAFUBIKI TENZEN
At Level 15 I was probably too weak to fight him(but I DID beat him).
After he's defeated the Old Man will speak to you and leave.
Leave and return to the Ninja Village(IGA). Go through the secret
passage to where the Lady gave you the ISHIKAWA KEY. Talk to the Old
Man and he'll give you the MOAN RING and the HENGE
NO HOUIN.
Take the Flying Saucer to the Platform South of SHIMA. At the Southern
most middle of the Province is the Village of OWASE which leads to the
Province of KII.
But before you go, you should go to the TENGU RETREAT at the South West
corner of ISE. Here you'll recieve TSUKINE, -a Sleep Spell that affects
one enemy.
Once you've entered KII, follow the path South to a Gondola. Ride it
and you'll fall into the center of the crevace. You'll find yourself
in the Valley of NAGE.
Use the MOAN RING on the Statue. An elevator will appear. Go down it to
the underground City of IHIKA(Ithica?). Grab the two chests in front of
the Old Man to recieve the TENJIN Spell, -which warps you to any
Province you've visited, and the SHISUI NO KAGAMI(Four Waters Mirror).
Speak to the Old Man, then exit IHIKA and enter the Cave to the right
to leave the Valley. Follow the path South to KUSHIMOTO Village, on the
coast near some pink rapids.
At the top area of KUSHIMOTO is a passage that leads to bridge with
another Statue. Use the FOUR WATERS MIRROR on the Statue like in NAGA
and a BRONZE BELL will appear. Take the Bell and leave.
Straight North of KUSHIMOTO is a TENGU RETREAT that gives you HIKINAMI,
-a Spell that warps you out of dungeons.
Travel East of KUSHIMOTO to SHINGUU Village, which is next a river.
Cross through SHINGUU and follow the river North to a fancier looking
Village of KUMANO.
In KUMANO, use the FOUR WATERS MIRROR on the Statue. Enter the
building, hit the 1st and 4th from left switches and go down the
passage that is revealed to get some chests. Go back up, change the
switches so that the 2nd, 3rd and 5th from left are turned and go
down the next passage to find a Boat.
Bring up the Main Menu while in the boat. The last command(formally
question marks) is now used to fire the Boat's Cannon. Use the Cannon
to destroy the doors that block your exit.
Sail South along the river back to SHINGUU. Use the Boat to reach
the lower right shore in SHINGUU and get the chests in the shrine.
Now blast the large rock at the bottom of the Village and sail into
the Sea.
You can reach another TENGU RETREAT by sailing North around the Eastern
shore of the Province and entering the first river on your left. Here
you'll recieve HAHAWASURE, -a Mute Spell that blocks one enemy's Magic.
Go back to KUSHIMOTO(near to the pink rapids) and sail West to another
coastal Village(SHIRAHAMA).
Go inside SHIRAHAMA and enter the shrine. Go down the stairs at the
top and use the FOUR WATERS MIRROR on the Statue underground. Now exit
and enter the Inn. The water in the bathes has been drained and you can
walk across to the passage on the other side. Underground here you'll
find another BRONZE BELL.
The South Western most island has a TENGU RETREAT that gives you
DOROMUSHI, -which decreases one group of enemies' Speed.
Sail North from here and enter the first river on your right. Continue
along the river into a Cave(KIYUUJIN) in a mountain.
Go up each stairway and grab the chests that you find. If a geyser
blocks your path, just go around it, most of them don't block entire
passage ways. The exit is at the top on the far right.
Enter KIYOHIME Village on the other side.
Use the Boat to reach the left shore inside KIYOHIME and enter the
Cave. Go through the passage and exit on the other side. Use the
FOUR WATERS MIRROR on the Statue to eliminate the geysers that blocked
your Boat from sailing up to the shrine. Go back to your Boat and go
into the shrine.
Inside, speak to KIKUGORO and you'll then fight a Boss.
BOSS: Princess KUCHINAWA
I was on Level 19 and used KABUKI's Wind Attack Spell(KAZAHANA) to
beat KUCHINAWA.
After the fight, grab the BRONZE BELL, leave and sail back out to
the West coast. Follow the shore North to the large pink City of
WAKAYAMA.
If you sail all the way North along the Western coast, there is another
TENGU RETREAT on the top right shore. Here you'll get FUYUGARE, -which
lowers enemies' Defense.
Sail into WAKAYAMA and use the Cannon to destroy the door blocking
your way into the Castle. Before you storm the Castle though, there
is a secret passage at the top right corner of the City that you can
reach by walking all the way around on the South shore.
Inside the Castle, if you search the two "dressers" on the first
floor, you will find two pieces of equipment. The armor is Cursed.
You'll find the same two items in similar chests on the second floor.
On the third floor there are two chests which contain the same shield
as the last two floors and different cursed item.
Follow KIKUGORO to the roof where he and KABUKI will face off.
Afterwards, KABUKI will recieve the YAMA MON KEY(Mountain Gate Key).
Head North East from WAKAYAMA to a Cave in an ice topped mountain(Mount
KOUYA KIN). Make your way up through the mountain to KIKUGORO with the
next Boss.
BOSS: TOTSUGEKI! TSUNOTAROU
On the next floor you'll find another trigger Statue. Use the FOUR
WATERS MIRROR on it to melt the ice. Take the BRONZE BELL, go up to
the next level to grab the chests and then exit.
Go back to the previous Province(ISE). Go to MIYOUIN Temple at the
Northwest corner of the map. Inside, match up the BRONZE BELLS with
the colored pedestals.
You will now have a large Mech(IHIKA GIANT) capable of crossing the
vines that guard the large Tree Fortress(Castle MITSURIN) near the
middle of the Province.
Climb up through Castle MIURIN until you find KIKUGORO with another
Boss.
BOSS: KURO NO EBISOU
Continue up through the Fortress until you find KIKUGORO.
BOSS: KIKUGORO
After beating KIKUGORO on the stage, follow him upstairs to face his
final form.
BOSS: KIKUGORO PLANT
I was on Level 22 when I beat both KIKUGORO's.
After KIKUGORO has been defeated, grab the Spirit Sword, -MYOUIN KARASU,
leave and head to the ISE Shrine to destroy the second DARK ORCHID.
After it's destroyed you'll learn the KURO HA GIRI Technique,
-a more powerful attack that makes you miss a turn.
