1 -- About the version
========================
1.2
Added some additional in-depth explanations to lock 7 in the brotherhood
kitchen, as well as some schematics.
1.1
I felt the need to add an alternative solution to lock 7, as some people
obviously had some problems with it, as well as adding an FAQ section to the
guide.
1.0
This document is finished as far as I'm concerned, so I'm not planning to post
another version in the near future. However, should some errors have occurred
that need correction or should I feel the need to edit some of this, a revised
version can be possible.
The lock picking puzzles are normally not too hard to solve. A little trying
here, moving there and by the time you get it open. But as it seems, quite some
people have problems with them. So maybe it would be appreciated if someone
gathered these solutions, as until now no other guide features them. Although
they are difficult to describe, I'll give it a shot and try to make the
solutions as easily reproducible as possible. For all the other puzzles in the
game, consult the other FAQs. And upfront, English isn't my mother language, so
please be lenient when it comes to possible grammatical impurities or wrong
phrasing.
Each pin has a certain number of holes, through which you have to maneuver the
lock pick. I have numbered the holes beginning with 1 from above to below. So
in the solutions, each number stands for the right hole to go through, with
pins from left to right. You might have to move the pins yourself up and down a
bit on the way through, just make sure you reach the next required hole number.
After you have reached the pin with the last number in a line, an action is
required, e.g. moving all the pins up. Always move everything in that direction
as much as it goes. After that, next line means next action, so you have to go
back with the lock pick and start the next line of holes.
There may be, of course, other possible solutions to the puzzles, maybe easier
and faster ones. I selected these solutions after the premise to be easily
reproducible as well as easy to divide and describe in actions. I tried to
avoid situations where the way through was very narrow and you could easily get
an impression of being stuck, even if the resulting solution was a bit longer.
When there were many variations possible, I chose spontaneously.
I recommend that you first try to solve the puzzle by yourself. Just keep in
mind, that when you really mess up the pins, back out and try to pick the lock
again, the pins are still in the same messed up position they where before.
Leave the room and re-enter to reset the puzzle.

3.1. Lock 1: Outside the dam
----------------------------
Location: The locked door leading into the building.
1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 2
-----------------------------
3.2. Lock 2: Entering the dam
-----------------------------
Location: After arriving at the end of the corridor, a fat monster bursts
through the wall. The locker is in the small room the monster came
from. It holds a small key.
3, 2, 3, 2, 3, 3, 2 (there are many other variations possible)
The lock in the brotherhood kitchen sometimes still seems to pose a problem. So
I'm going to explain the lines and what they are for, for better understanding,
as well as adding some schematics.
-----------
Explanation
-----------
1. Generally, the first thing would be to get pin number 5 down as much as you
can. This can't be done in one move, as the first pin is blocking somehow most
times. So this had to be broken up into 2 lines (line 1 and 2).
- 2, 2, 2, 2, 3; pull down
Follow this route and pull all the way down as far as it goes. It will only
move a little down, but the resulting alignment after this line is necessary
for the 2nd line.
- 3, 3, 2, 2, 3; pull down
This way is basically the same way as line 1, only you have to go through the
3-hole in the first two pins. Thus you have a different leverage on the rest
and move the pins a bit more down than before.
The first hole in pin 1 can be a little edgy to reach, depending on how much
you managed to pull everything down in line 1. So move the first pin up a
little first, then go through the 3 hole.
2. The next 2 lines are basically to move the long pin 4 up. This again can
only be done in two moves.
- 3, 3, 2, 2; pull up
- 2, 2, 2, 2; pull up
3. Now the long pin number 6 should be accessible, by going through hole 3 in
pin 5.
- 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2
----------
Schematics
----------
I originally intended to post a GIF image in the FAQ section, but sadly it was
deemed too overspecialized. So these schematics will have to suffice. If your
lock looks different, indicating differences in the versions, please inform me
about that via the message board.
(The schematics are showing how the lock should look like after the step.)

5 -- Lock picking character remarks
=====================================
Every time Stan opens a lock, he gives a random remark. If you want to hear a
certain remark you haven't heard during the game, the most efficient place to
reproduce these would be at the beginning of the dam. Don't save, proceed until
the locker, then go back and save. This way you spare yourself the repetition,
ways are short and the lock there is easy to open. I found the following
remarks:
- that lock was easy
- this lock is a breeze
- too bad I didn't time that one
- if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything
- Stan Jones, locksmith of the year
- who's the man
--------------------------------------
- The solution to a lock doesn't work.
--------------------------------------
1. Try to be as precise as you can when reconstructing the solutions. I have
checked them several times, they work in my game.
2. There's another possibility: I've been playing the European release, maybe
they've changed that lock somewhat in the other versions. (Obscure 1 had
some differences, too). Until I get confirmed that everything works in the
US version, I can never rule that out.
-----------------------------------------------------
- The solution to lock 7 in the kitchen doesn't work.

If you encountered any problems with the solutions, found some errors worth
mentioning or feel you want to contribute something, feel free to post it on
the message board of the game under the topic <lock picking>. I will check
regularly.
Sorry, no email-address. I could write down an email alias here, but what's the
point in that, if I'm gonna delete it a few weeks later anyway, or use a side
account I'd never check, because of spam and the likes. It's a shame what the
world has come to. There would be another theoretical way, but for that, check
out my other FAQ if you're really that interested in contacting me.
