RUPERT'S HEARTBREAK - CHAPTER I

After supporting me through years of researching the origins of the Jewel
Board, my beloved Emma has left me for the wealthy and cavalier Sebastian
Grenard.

Inconsolable, I ran from the university with the notion of joining the Navy.
Alas, I was too old to enlist and so I joined the engine staff of a Cargo Ship
enroute to South Africa.

With a heavy heart, I now set my sights on the sea. My journey ahead will be
wrought with trials and tribulations, better to distract me!

THE VOYAGE - 5 LEVELS

Level 1-1 (The Voyage)

Drat! These sailors are such a miserable lot. "Your highness", they call me.
They've made me the target of their scorn and for what? I am a scholar, a
gentleman. I should be dining at the captain's table and instead I find
myself the target of cruel gibberish from twisted minds.

Level 1-2 (The Voyage)

I've met a curious man. Goes by the name Hani. Like a savage, he's covered
from head to foot in mysterious tattoos. This seasoned old deck hand has
become my closest confidant. That fact alone should cause me grief; but
instead, my current grieving comes from the knowledge that Hani holds about
Jewel Boards. He seems to hold claim to legends no other living man knows...

Level 1-3 (The Voyage)

Thought of my beautiful, sweet, and angelic Emma with that low-life, no good
heir Sebastian Grenard. Fits of rage followed by immeasurable heartache. If
only I could have figured a way to annex my need for knowledge of the Jewel
Board with my need for the love of Emma Swimmingly...Alas! Without Emma I am
but a shell of the man I seek to be.

Level 1-4 (The Voyage)

Hani speaks of an Ancient African Civilization that has crafted the grandest
of all Jewel Boards - and how its misuse led to the tribe's demise. Hani
tells me that I must prove my worthiness by solving jewel puzzles and earning
his tale. My heart may be weakened, but my head remains strong! I daresay, I
will learn Hani's sage stories!

Level 1-5 (The Voyage)

I've decided to pull myself up and dust myself off. There is no more time for
foolish moping and carrying on. I must face the fact that Emma is out of my
life and that now my mistress, as always, is the Jewel Board. There is no
sense turning back now. I must follow the path I've laid out for myself.

LEVEL 1 COMPLETE

With my feet on solid ground, I am thankful for Captain Hallinan's generous
decision to allow my leave. so far, this new journey has been utterly lacking
in excitement and danger. I anxiously await new sights, smells, and tastes!

BAZAAR - 6 LEVELS

Level 2-1 (Bazaar)

I have always considered myself a man of honor. Captain Hallinan did not want
to take me on. "A yellow barnacle", he called me - a sailor with nary any
experience. But I vowed to work my hardest and serve his vessel for a solid
year. Alas, I now find myself enthralled by Hani's stories of the Jewel Board
and I don't know what to do. I'm possessed with an insatiable hunger to
return to my studies.

Level 2-2 (Bazaar)

Captain Hallinan does not take disloyalty lightly and I fear his wrath. Well,
off to sleep. It has been a back-breaking day of coiling rope and scrubbing
timber and I must rest up. Tomorrow I shall face the captain with my request
for pardon.

Level 2-3 (Bazaar)

Captain Hallinan, good-hearted brigand, has agreed to grant me leave! but of
course there's a condition. The captain is giving me on day - only one - to
disembark in Cape Town and find a famed golden Zulu Warrior Mask. The mask is
rumored to be hidden in the old bazaar. He categorically believes that the
mask will play a key role in ending this brutal world war. The task will be
near impossible, but at least I'll be off this cursed ship!

Level 2-4 (Bazaar)

I have begun my trek through this wild bazaar. The streets are dusty and the
smell of chickens, gunpowder, and incense is enough to send my head reeling.
The merchants' booths are packed like cans of sardines with the wildest
artifacts. It will be a miracle if I can find anything of value amidst this
mind-boggling maze of junk.

Level 2-5 (Bazaar)

Finally, at the back of a stall that sells dried peppers, I stumble across the
golden shards of what seems to be genuine Zulu ritual accoutrement. I try to
piece them together and, behold, the pieces fit! I offer six rubies to the
vendor, a stone-faced crone with a violently yellow headdress. But she shakes
her head until I present my entire collection of jewels - a collection I've
spent my life building. somehow she knows exactly how many I possess!

Level 2-6 (Bazaar)

I needed just one more golden piece - but have no more money to spend and no
idea where to look. Then, as the sun is setting and the merchants are packing
up their stalls, a man with a face like the Zulu mask itself approached. His
accent is one I've never encountered. He handed me a bundle wrapped in velvet
and said, "For you. One day, I will ask you to repay this favor."

LEVEL 2 COMPLETE

Finally, I can escape humanity! As I begin my safari, my senses are keenly
attuned to the whispers of grasses and the growls of lions. I will tread
carefully.

THE SAFARI - 7 LEVELS

Level 3-1 (The Safari)

My wide-brimmed hat doesn't do much to stop the intolerable heat of the noon
sun. Every so often I find a scrawny shade tree under which I take respite.
While the stark beauty of these plains makes my heart swell with joy,
something about the savanna also makes me think of Emma, so far away.

Level 3-2 (The Safari)

Great plains give way to cauldron-like valleys and steep mountain slopes. The
rays of the sun are unrelenting and this cracked earth has surely seen no
water all year. Years of sitting at my desk - researching, reading, writing -
have left me in no shape to hike this vast landscape. My muscles burn, and so
does my desire to secure the Jewel Board - which I must focus on as my one
true love.

Level 3-3 (The Safari)

As I rested under a sweet thorn tree, a tribe came upon me. I scrambled to my
feet and looked each member in the eye. The tribesmen, however, seemed to
look through me. I opened my arms and made grunts of introduction, but still
they did not move. I hadn't spoken with another human in nearly two months
and yearned for interaction. How odd it was to feel as if I did not exist.
Perhaps I don't, and I'm just a vestige of my own compulsive thoughts.

Level 3-4 (The Safari)

Today I turned a bend and ran into a pride of lions. I had never been so
close to a lion, let alone five of them at one time. Each one straightened
its noble neck and shook its mane, revealing medallions of overlapping gold
disks, gleaming in the sun. Not a lioness was in sight and I couldn't help
but to think of Emma. I proceeded without incident. Later in the day, I
encountered a cheetah as well as a gazelle. I must be close... to something.

Level 3-5 (The Safari)

The tread on my boots is almost gone. My clothes are filthy and shredded from
the harsh climate. If only I had some more efficient way in which to traverse
these plains... I truly had no idea what I was heading into the day I left
that ship, nay, the day I left my home.

Level 3-6 (The Safari)

My hard work has paid off! It hasn't been easy though. Just earlier to today,
I came across another pride of lions wearing those strange medallions. Seeing
as the previous pride had been so calm, I approached. But this time, the king
lifted his immense frame and lunged forward, unleashing an earth-moving roar.
I dove to the ground. When I looked up, the lions were gone, replaced by a
group of tribesmen, also wearing golden medallions.

Level 3-7 (The Safari)

The tribe has taken care of me for the past few days and I feel human once
again. Last night, they held what I can only refer to as a jewel ceremony.
The meat - whatever it was - was spicy and rich, washed down by a sweet,
fermented nectar. And then they danced, covered in overlapping stripes of
bejeweled leather straps, to the hypnotic but ever-changing beat of drums. The
next morning, everyone - in fact, the entire makeshift village - was gone.

LEVEL 3 COMPLETE

I see in the distance a great colony of ruins. I must be coming upon the Land
of Ophir. This is like nothing I have ever before set my eyes upon. Such a
wondrous, age-old creation amid such stark nature simply takes one's breath
away. I am close to something of import, of this I am sure!

GREAT ZIMBABWE - 8 LEVELS

Level 4-1 (Great Zimbabwe)

Hani told me about a city called Land of Ophir, mentioned in the Bible as the
place that King Solomon's fleet went to trade for gold. Ophir's buildings
were built upon gold brick with paths paved with topaz and ruby. The true
location of the Land of Ophir is unknown - some say India, some Peru, some
even Armenia. I only hope that Hani's map is correct and that I can navigate
my way to this wonder...

Level 4-2 (Great Zimbabwe)

I have found it! The place lies in ruin, and there are no gold or jewels to
found, but this most certainly must have once been the Land of Ophir. It is a
sight to behold! One can make out what was once the largest obelisk in the
world. It stood 34 meters high and was topped with a golden bird, flanked by
massive golden crocodiles. The birds fly above it in mysterious formations.

Level 4-3 (Great Zimbabwe)

With the help of some friendly but undernourished tribesmen, I oversee the
reconstruction of the obelisk stone by precious stone. It will take a while
to find the right pieces and hoist them properly in place, but I have no place
else to be. The outside world is at war, a loveless and hostile place. This
Great Mozambique Ophir, on the other hand, is placid and pleasant.

Level 4-4 (Great Zimbabwe)

The people of this land were called the Shona. They were a highly spiritual
people who labored in the soil and found great connection between their home
lives and their purpose on earth. The way of life for the Shona meant not
only living in union with each other, but with all living things. It was this
sense of peace and unity that made them one of the strongest African
populations for many centuries.

Level 4-5 (Great Zimbabwe)

The Shona have, however, become dispersed over this vast land and eventually
have become diluted by more aggressive peoples and languages. Elders whom
once reigned over communities have passed on and the younger generations have
been less eager to continue the difficult and spiritual golden road that their
ancestors paved so majestically centuries ago. The decline began, they say,
when their great city of Ophir fell to ruin and plunder.

Level 4-6 (Great Zimbabwe)

My reconstruction of the obelisk has been a draining task, both physically and
emotionally. The rubble is heavy and sharp and the intense labor fatigues my
ability to think straight about how I can secure the Jewel Board.

Level 4-7 (Great Zimbabwe)

The obelisk is nearly complete and I am thrilled! But I have a grave concern
about the immense weight of the stone bird that tops this fragile masterpiece.
We set up a tripod of cedar trees and hemp rope, and I trekked 100 miles to
find a blacksmith that can forge a large enough pulley. It takes nearly a
hundred tribesmen to help hoist the bird. It now dangles above the tip. I am
tentative, afraid to release it and shatter the entire column...

Level 4-8 (Great Zimbabwe)

I am exhausted, yet my heart sings with the knowledge that I have gotten this
far in my journey! Inside the dome, gold-encrusted hieroglyphs spell out
something like this: "Jewels Sleep Beyond The Great Water Wall." Victoria
Falls! It must be!

LEVEL 4 COMPLETE

After baking in the desert heat and working up such a sweat whilst
reconstructing the obelisk, I am greeted by the cool rush of Victoria Falls!
The crashing water sounds like the roar of a thousand prides of lions. So
cool and refreshing, it almost feels as if I can drink the air.

VICTORIA FALLS - 10 LEVELS

Level 5-1 (Victoria Falls)

I am making my way through Victoria Falls. The locals call it Mosi Oa Tunya--
"the smoke which thunders." The land is far more inviting than anything else
I have yet to encounter. Rainbow-streaked mists coming off of the falls are a
welcome respite after my previous week choking on dust in the desert plains.

Level 5-2 (Victoria Falls)

Ahead I spotted a group of fierce looking tribesmen carrying the carcasses of
several gazelles. Blood covered their calloused hands and the stench of death
seeped from their every pore. I tried to turn away, but the men shouted as
they spotted me, and I was left no choice but to approach. The chief is a man
of few words, which is fortunate, since I did not in the least recognize his
language. It is clear he wants me to follow him. To what fate?

Level 5-3 (Victoria Falls)

The natives brought me to a small ring of straw-peaked huts. I smiled dumbly
at everyone as they stare at me. Finally, against my better judgment, I fell
asleep. Awaking to the sound of the djembe, I was treated to a meal of the
most aromatic roasted meats I have ever had the fortune to consume. Amazing!
These people invited me home with them simply to share in their bounty!

Level 5-4 (Victoria Falls)

The next morning a guide led me to the top of the falls. How wondrous! Many
chasms converge here, like the very ends of the earth. The entire Zambezi
disappears down the cliffs, swallowed into oblivion.

Level 5-5 (Victoria Falls)

Guided by the jewels, I notice a diamond-shaped boulder at the top of the
falls more brightly colored than the others. I investigate and indeed the
rock seems to be made of something different than the native granite. When I
give the rock a heave, it moves easily, as if on tracks. The waters quickly
reconfigure themselves around this new obstacle. Further down the falls,
another bright rock is revealed.

Level 5-6 (Victoria Falls)

Using several grappling ropes, I make the perilous and slippery descent down
the falls, to a ledge with the next discolored boulder. I need to push this
one harder but finally it gives way. again, the direction of this vertical
stream takes an unexpected turn. I'm left standing on a tiny dry island in
between two violently rushing onslaughts.

Level 5-7 (Victoria Falls)

The final boulder lies near the very bottom of the falls, shrouded in an
endless spray. I have no idea how I'll ever reach it. Having made it this
far, I elect to hire four or five local tribesmen to slowly release more and
more rope as I dangle down into the cauldron. There I hang like some idiotic
puppet. I try to kick and punch the rock but it won't budge. There's no
choice but to cut the ropes, drop to the low ledge, and hope for another way
out.

Level 5-8 (Victoria Falls)

As I push the boulder aside, the water redirects itself revealing a perfect
arch, leading into a cavern lined with golden patterns. Striking my trusty
flashlight, I head inside. The path immediately forks into two passages, one
lined with rubies and one with emeralds. I play the jewel game and determine
that red is the way to go.

Level 5-9 (Victoria Falls)

I continue trying different branches, guided by my jewel game. Curious stick-
figure characters are etched into the golden walls of the caves, telling the
story of great destruction and ruin. The mere thought of my journey coming to
a close saddens me and yet leaves me a joy I can only liken to that of having
Emma in my arms. Oh, Emma...

Level 5-10 (Victoria Falls)

I have found it! Yes! It is true and I am ecstatic! The Shona Jewel Board
is now in my hands! If only that Emma had trusted me, how proud she would
have been. I should write her with news of my find - so that she realizes the
mistake she made! Alas, having to choose between the love of my heart and the
love of the quest, I dare say: This dank cave is more a home to me now than
Emma's arms.

RUPERT'S HEARTBREAK - CONCLUSION

I KNOW THAT WITH ENOUGH SKILL AND PERSEVERANCE I CAN KEEP THE JEWEL BOARD IN
MY POSSESSION AND UNLOCK ITS SECRET ORIGIN - AND WITH THAT I CAN EARN BACK
EMMA'S RESPECT... AND MAYBE LOVE. I MUST SET UP A RESEARCH FACILITY HER IN
ZIMBABWE. INDEED, I SHALL KNOW ALL THERE IS TO KNOW BEFORE I EVEN THINK ABOUT
RETURNING!

LEVEL 5 COMPLETE

My will to succeed is strong and I have shown the merit of my tenacity. I am
triumphant and I look forward to the adventures that are certain to come my
way!

EMMA'S APOLOGY - CHAPTER II

I once shared Rupert's passion for Jewel Board knowledge, but his passion
became a single-minded obsession, with me playing less and less of a role.
How could I begin to invest my heart in a man whose true love lies not for me,
but for old, dead artifacts and theories? I cannot and will not compete with
that.

I'm fortunate to have attracted Sebastian as a suitor. Sebastian has
introduced me to all the finest art, foods, and performances that life has to
offer. Did I mention that he's wealthy beyond all imagination? I'll try not
to hold that against him!

THE VOYAGE - 5 LEVELS

Level 1-1 (The Voyage)

Sebastian and I have embarked on a luxurious cruise. I feel overindulgent,
but I have to admit that I adore being pampered in first-class style whenever
I am with Sebastian! We eat the rarest delicacies, drink the finest wine -
and we do it all with only the most impressive company! Hard to imagine that
elsewhere in the world, horrible war is being waged.

Level 1-2 (The Voyage)

My studies have certainly taken a backseat in my life as Sebastian shows me
the wonders of the world. However, my mind still does wander from time to
time back to my thesis that now lies unfinished in my study. Ahh, my passion
for feral children and language development may seem quite a bore to many, but
I love it all the same.

Level 1-3 (The Voyage)

My studies have been progressing well and I am anxious to be able to share
them with the world. I have made tremendous strides in my psychological
understanding of feral children and am thrill with my recent findings.
Sebastian just doesn't show any interest when I try to explain... I almost
wish Rupert were here... He would get the import of my new theory.

Level 1-4 (The Voyage)

The needs of this vessel are seen to by a curious man named Hani. While he
does not seem to spend much time with the passengers - he can be quite
intimidating with his great stature and his head to toe tattoos - I have found
him to be a most sensational conversationalist. Hani seems to also have some
very strong feelings regarding research into the lives of feral children.

Level 1-5 (The Voyage)

Studying had been far from my intentions for this trip with Sebastian, but my
studies are increasingly more interesting than the drivel that he and his
fancy friends spout. I've taken to basking on the upper deck in the warm sun,
my nose in a copy of Levi-Strauss. I do, however, make time for conversation
with that deckhand, Hani, who never ceases to amaze me. Hani even knows about
Rupert and the quest for the Jewel Board!

LEVEL 1 COMPLETE

I can't believe where I am, about to set foot in the colorful markets of
Dakar. How strange to be in this continent, a place I've always dreamed of,
with my beloved Sebastian. What adventures await me I can only imagine!

BAZAAR - 6 LEVELS

Level 2-1 (Bazaar)

Hello Africa! We have set to port in Dakar and I am so anxious to explore the
overflowing market places! I have already spotted a beautiful golden cuff
bracelet. The relief of a stealthy leopard rises from the metal and I want
nothing more than to wear it around my wrist to forever remind me of this
exotic land. But the price is unbelievable.

Level 2-2 (Bazaar)

Sebastian dutifully bought me the leopard bracelet and we have how set foot in
the most extravagant hotel my eyes have ever seen. Every inch of our quarters
is made of marble, silk and gold. From the toilet fixtures to the bedding, we
are ensconced in luxury. Sebastian may drone on and on about his wealth, but
when it comes to showing it off he knows how to really create some excitement!

Level 2-3 (Bazaar)

I had arranged for all of my mail to be forwarded to this hotel and a surprise
letter arrived from Rupert this afternoon - from Africa to New York and back
to Africa again! What a wonderful surprise when I opened it up and dried
wildflower petals fell from the sheets of paper onto my dress! He says he
misses me dearly, but what am I to make of this with him so far away and
Sebastian at my side?

Level 2-4 (Bazaar)

Rupert's letter went beyond flowery sweet nothings. If he is to be believed
and I have never known him to fib, then he has located the giant Jewel Board!
My heart beats double time and my head is in the clouds to think of how happy
I am for Rupert. A success like this could mean everything for him... Very
titillating, I must say...

Level 2-5 (Bazaar)

I cannot help but continue to think about Rupert. I miss his devotion to me
and his tenacity for research. I was foolish and my heart was not in the
right place when I so casually turned myself over to lavish hotels and fancy
jewelry instead of earnest, dedicated field work. I'm sure Rupert never meant
to neglect me for the Jewel Board... but should he really want me back, can
our love mend itself?

Level 2-6 (Bazaar)

Sebastian and I feasted on another sumptuous dinner. We dined on roasted
squab and loin of elk among countless other delicacies. A champagne toast
lighted the evening with glamour and sophistication, yet I could not truly
enjoy the meal for I know now my heart truly belongs to Rupert... I fear I'd
rather be with my Rupert in the wild, eating coconut and beetle stew.

LEVEL 2 COMPLETE

Sebastian and I are packing our many trunks, getting ready to quest through
some of the most ancient, forgotten villages of Africa. And to think
Sebastian has hired a jeep to shuttle us in first class style through this
unforgiving landscape.

THE SAFARI - 7 LEVELS

Level 3-1 (The Safari)

Something seems to be amiss on this safari. Sebastian has been acting very
strange and guarded. He seems to be up to no good and won't discuss anything
of any importance with me. He's dismissed my every thought for the past two
days as frivolous and unworthy of his time and attention.

Level 3-2 (The Safari)

I am in hysterics! I cannot find the letter Rupert sent me. It was tightly
bundled with my research notes and hidden in my jewelry box for safe keeping.
I've become accustomed to touching that letter and its dried flowers every
time I feel a bit down. Where could I have misplaced it?

Level 3-3 (The Safari)

Two days have passed and still I have not been able to find the missing
letter. I pains my heart that the one small piece of Rupert I had is now
gone. Sebastian seems less than interested in why I have bee so distraught.
In fact, he hasn't even asked me why I'm crying.

Level 3-4 (The Safari)

Sebastian! That scoundrel! Just this morning I came across him as I made my
way to the market for some guava. He was sitting outside of a cafe, sipping
an expresso and poring over papers. Initially, I was overjoyed to see him. I
thought that we may finally get a chance to sit and chat. But I swiftly
recognized Rupert's letter lying there, beneath his saucer!

Level 3-5 (The Safari)

It is clear now that Sebastian has been two steps ahead of me the entire time.
I am certain that he plans to use me to steal the Jewel Board discovery from
Rupert! Sebastian is out of my life and now I must make saving Rupert and the
Jewel board my motivation to go on.

Level 3-6 (The Safari)

It is with great disgust that I kiss Sebastian's thin lips good morning. I
must try to be secretive so that Sebastian doesn't know that I'm on to him and
his menacing plans. My only chance of foiling him is to unearth his scheme.

Level 3-7 (The Safari)

I must write to Rupert now to warn him of this tragedy. This will not be easy,
as I fear Rupert may see me as an accomplice to Sebastian. He was so
devastated when I first ran away - but had I not run, Rupert would never have
had his amazing quest.

LEVEL 3 COMPLETE

With the ancient city stretching before me, I get a deep feeling in my bones
that this -- the study of the rise and fall of ancient peoples -- is my true
destiny. Perhaps, if I can understand the details of how lapsed civilizations
functioned, I can get closer to knowing my own mysterious self.

GREAT ZIMBABWE - 8 LEVELS

Level 4-1 (Great Zimbabwe)

Sebastian and I have approached the outskirts of Great Zimbabwe. I am pained
to continue this charade with him. As soon as I can discover his true
intentions, I will leave him and try to find Rupert. My heart belongs to
Rupert and no amount of money or extravagancies will be able to change that
again.

Level 4-2 (Great Zimbabwe)

Last night, I pretended to go out for a walk around the hunting lodge's
grounds, but instead I snuck beneath Sebastian's window. There I heard him
brief his right-hand man, Flaubert about the plan to bribe the locals and form
a small band of mercenaries, with the goal of locating Rupert and terminating
him. I cannot lie idle any longer!

Level 4-3 (Great Zimbabwe)

Under the dark cover of night, I slip away from Sebastian. I will now
continue this adventure on my own. Rupert and I need to be reunited and now
nothing can stand in our way... I think... Oh, I certainly hope that I can
pull this off without a hitch. If Sebastian or his minions were to catch on
to my escape before morning, I hate to think of what he would resort to.

Level 4-4 (Great Zimbabwe)

This evening, without a place to stay or a meal to eat, I mad the acquaintance
of a young feral girl named Kamali. She is only about ten years old, but
speaks a fluent, if odd, version of English that she picked up in the streets.
She is very bright and full of fanciful stories of her village - a place that
had long ago fallen to ruin.

Level 4-5 (Great Zimbabwe)

This morning, Kamali put a package in my hand. Stopping to untie it, I
revealed a ruby. Upon seeing my surprise, Kamali told me that rubies were as
common as rocks in her village, and that she had saved a few for special
occasions. She said that many years ago her village was full of jewels and
gold, until fiercer tribes came in and plundered everything. The elders
managed to hide away their giant Jewel Board - the source of all their riches.

Level 4-6 (Great Zimbabwe)

Kamali led me to the great dome at the center of Great Zimbabwe this
afternoon. She told me that the dome held the secret location of the Jewel
Board in its womb. When we reached the come, however, it was surrounded by
dozens of workers - some of them armed - trying to take the structure apart
brick by brick. No doubt this crew was hired by Sebastian.

Level 4-7 (Great Zimbabwe)

Undaunted, brave Kamali brought me back to the dome late in the night. There
was only one watchman and anyone could have heard his snores for miles.
Kamali deftly crawled into a tiny chamber and opened the inner core of the
dome via some secret contraption. My heart was pounding up into my throat as
Kamali got me one step closer to finding the was to Rupert.

Level 4-8 (Great Zimbabwe)

Opening the dome revealed a bright light. I peered inside and found a neatly
folded, highly-stained piece of papyrus. Kamali motioned for me to pick it up
and doing so, I unfolded it to reveal the map to Victoria Falls. With this
map, I could surely be on the right course to find Rupert once and for all!

LEVEL 4 COMPLETE

The grand waterfall ahead is a great symbol of my own moods as of late --
violent, raging, and plummeting down a cliff. Can Rupert really be here? I
must ask around. Surely somebody would notice if he set up an excavation site
nearby.

VICTORIA FALLS - 10 LEVELS

Level 5-1 (Victoria Falls)

Kamali insisted upon joining me to Victoria falls. I was, at first, scared to
take Kamali with me and away from her homeland. but it quickly became
apparent that she was the better navigator of the two, spoke many tribal
languages, and had an uncanny ability to scare up resources. In the end, it
was she babysitting me!

Level 5-2 (Victoria Falls)

I've entered the cave at Victoria Falls. Kamali has stayed outside so that I
may have the first few moments of my reunion with Rupert alone. I can see the
Jewel Board gleaming in the distance and a figure hunched next to it. It must
be Rupert! Oh! And that Jewel Board is so astounding! I am simply over-
whelmed merely by setting foot in this glowing cave!

Level 5-3 (Victoria Falls)

Rupert saw me. For a moment I thought he would turn away, but then he threw
his arms around me. Embracing, it felt as though we had never skipped a beat.
We kissed and I told him that I realized what a huge mistake I had made. I
told him I'd left Sebastian for good and that he was the only man for me. but
that's when our reunion took a turn for the worse...

Level 5-4 (Victoria Falls)

Rupert's disposition changed quite abruptly upon hearing Sebastians name. He
began to spew horrible names at me. I pleaded with him to forget about the
past. To forgive me and live for the moment - but he would not hear it. He
told me to go.

Level 5-5 (Victoria Falls)

I left the cave. Taking Kamali's hand, I hung my head while the two of us
walked silently down the dirt path. Wiping my tears on my sleeve, I looked
back one more time at the entrance to the cave and saw Rupert standing there,
staring. I squeezed Kamali's hand and wiped her tiny face as tears also began
to well in her eyes.

Level 5-6 (Victoria Falls)

A scream -- just as we were nearly out of earshot. "Emma! Emma!" I turned
to see Rupert running frantically towards us, his arms extended. Embracing
once again, Rupert whispered to me that the humility I showed as I walked away
and the compassion that came from wiping Kamali's tears spoke to him. He
wants to give us another try.

Level 5-7 (Victoria Falls)

After we had all calmed ourselves, I told him about Sebastian's dastardly
plan. Rupert laughed it off, confident that the secret location of the Jewel
Board would be safe and that no amount of money could reveal it. Rupert,
Kamali and I told stories around a great fire as we sipped honeybush tea. I
was so thankful to have real conversations again!

Level 5-8 (Victoria Falls)

Her pockets full of more jewels, Kamali boarded a bus for her village. Rupert
and I were now free again to talk openly as adults. Rupert listened patiently
as I told him about how miserable I had been with Sebastian and how I had
longed for an intellectual connection again. Rupert, kind and caring as he
is, listened to my every word...

Level 5-9 (Victoria Falls)

With nightfall having already made its descent, I asked Rupert if he had a
spare blanket so that I could make a bed for myself at the far corner of the
cavern. He looked me deep in the eyes, long and hard, and then broke out into
hearty laughter. I laughed too, so deeply that it felt it could banish all
the pain in the world.

Level 5-10 (Victoria Falls)

Rupert pulled me in close, asking me never again to leave his side. We
kissed, a romantic, heart-pounding kiss and the Jewel Board, in response,
began to throb with an other worldly glow! Love filled the air as we prepared
to spend the first night of the rest of our lives together...

EMMA'S APOLOGY - CONCLUSION

I MAY HAVE ACTED FOOLISHLY IN THE PAST, BUT MY HEART HAS ALWAYS BEEN IN THE
RIGHT PLACE AND NOW I AM FREE TO REAP THE BOUNTY OF HARD WORK. I WILL KEEP MY
HEAD HELD HIGH AS I MAKE STRIDES TO RIGHT MY WRONGS AND I FIND PEACE IN TRUTH,
LOVE AND HONOR. I KNOW THAT I MUST CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR RUPERT'S TRUST, JUST
AS WE MUST BOTH FIGHT TO HOLD ON TO THIS JEWEL BOARD. I FEAR THAT SEBASTIAN
AND HIS ILK ARE FAST APPROACHING!

LEVEL 5 COMPLETE

Victory is so much sweeter when you have someone with which to share it!
Rupert and I embrace beneath the waterfall. As joyful as the hug is, I can
sense a certain hesitancy to it. but I just bury my face in his leather
jacket and try to savor the moment.

GRENARD'S REVENGE - CHAPTER III

I'VE HAD MY EYE ON EMMA SWIMMINGLY FOR A WHILE NOW -- SUCH A MIND, SUCH A
PHYSIQUE, OOH LA LA! WINNING HER OVER WAS ALMOST TOO EASY!

OF COURSE I CANNOT BLAME HER! I AM HANDSOME, WEALTHY, CHARMING, AND, UN, DID
I MEMTION INCONCEIVABLE WEALTHY? HA! WHAT WOMAN WOULDN'T WANT TO BE ON THE
ARM OF THE DASHING SEBASTIAN GRENARD.

AND WHY WOULDN'T I WANT TO ALIGN MYSELF WITH A PRETTY, YOUNG THING WITH A
KNOWLEDGE OF ANCIENT ARTIFACTS THAT NEARLY RIVALS MY OWN!

THE VOYAGE - 5 LEVELS

Level 1-1 (The Voyage)

The Queen Anne is the most luxurious of all luxury liners. Little Emma has
clearly never experienced such heights of dining, classical music, and grand
ambiance. I love watching her eyes light up with such constant surprise. My
peers, all snobs, are clearly impressed by her - her intellect and worldliness
are rare for a woman to possess, especially a woman as luscious and shapely as
she.

Level 1-2 (The Voyage)

Of course, as a continental man, I take joy in mixing business with pleasure.
Upon exiting this ship, I will promptly set the course to exploit this land
and its beleaguered people for all that they are worth. I intend to befriend
the chieftains inland and gain their trust - so naive are they in the
mechanisms of global finance. All the gold, diamonds, and exotic textiles of
Africa will be mine!

Level 1-3 (The Voyage)

While taking an evening stroll along the first class deck, I came across a
looming figure in the darkness. The man greeted me in a low, rumbling
baritone. I was awed at his ragged uniform covering dozens upon dozens of
swirling tattoos. Clearly a crew member! "You shouldn't be up here, my good
man," I told him. "Surely there's something you can see to below?" His
demeanor changed on a dime and he walked away.

Level 1-4 (The Voyage)

Emma tells me that the man I met is named Hani and that he is an endless font
of stories. Most interesting is that he is familiar with the various Jewel
Boards of Mayan, Celtic, Hindu, Persian, and South African Lore. Indeed, the
Jewel Boards are somewhat of a passion for him. Perhaps that ink-stained
brute may be of use to me after all.

Level 1-5 (The Voyage)

Ugh. Emma's become such a bore. All she ever wants to talk about is her
research and her thesis. "Feral children do this, feral children do that..."
Yawn. She doesn't even seem to get stars in her eyes when I try to change the
subject to shopping or champagne. What kind of woman is not easily distracted
by such things? One topic lights her fires, however: The Jewel Board!

LEVEL 1 COMPLETE

Ha! Now that I'm off that infernal boat I can get down to business. There
are treasures galore to be "borrowed!" And hopefully Emma will relax a bit
and just let us enjoy Africa's riches together.

BAZAAR - 6 LEVELS

Level 2-1 (Bazaar)

Oh! Joy of joys! Rupert has been a fool and Emma is too slow for my quick
wits! This morning I spied an envelope on Emma's vanity. I quickly pocketed
it while Emma dressed to go to the market. Indeed, if the letter is to be
believed, Rupert has actually located this mythical Jewel Board. He is vague
as to his whereabouts, but surely such a dullard won't be hard to find...
Perhaps Emma can help.

Level 2-2 (Bazaar)

I have decided that I must pin down that mysterious man, Hani, for more
information... I know he'll be a stubborn brute when it comes to the specifics,
so for a few dollars I have enlisted the support of the local constabulary.
The police will put the heat on him. Surely he will let loose a few tales.

Level 2-3 (Bazaar)

Aha! As I intuited, Hani had some useful information indeed. apparently,
hidden in this marketplace is a golden mask that will point us towards the
Jewel Board's secret. The police are asking me if we should rid ourselves
completely of this useless deckhand... but we might as well cast him aside and
keep him alive. Such good news makes me feel so charitable.

Level 2-4 (Bazaar)

According to Hani, all of the pieces of the mask are right here in the market.
Ha! Now I have all of my men buying up every mask shard in this market - a
surefire plan! With a little bit of chemistry and trial and error we will
have the final mask assembled in no time.

Level 2-5 (Bazaar)

I need to ensure that Emma and i are constantly on good terms so that I may
cull more information about that loverboy Rupert. Tonight I took her on an
extraordinary dinner date. Champagne, elk, squab - all the finest - but! I
know that something has changed. Emma seemed very distant tonight and i am
certain that that letter from that miserable clown, Rupert has got her head
and heart stirring.

Level 2-6 (Bazaar)

Nightfall approaches. I have put together the final piece of this mask. Once
assembled, it revealed that I must voyage on to the Great Zimbabwe. To
think -- rubies, diamonds, and emeralds each hand-carved to the general size
of my head! I get so anxious to imagine plucking those jewels and selling
them to collectors, monarchs, and museums around the world.

LEVEL 2 COMPLETE

I am unstoppable! Those fools should have known that they couldn't keep
secrets from Sebastian Grenard! Alas, there's nothing money can't buy - be it
in Alaska, Alabama, or Africa! I shall assemble the jeep to shuttle Emma and
my lackeys with me through the wilds! These superstitious natives shall cower
before me...

THE SAFARI - 7 LEVELS

Level 3-1 (The Safari)

As cover, I have told Emma that we are going on a safari and hunting
expedition. Soon we'll reach the great Zimbabwe and the board of jewels! My
men have obtained the parts for the jeep. If they can assemble it together in
working order, we will be able to ride the savanna in the highest style.

Level 3-2 (The Safari)

Emma continues to become more and more of a thorn in my side. She just
blabbers on and on about her thesis. So many times I've contemplated ditching
her, but I know that I must keep her happy and near me if I ever intend to use
her. She clearly knows and cares far more about the Jewel Board than she lets
on.

Level 3-3 (The Safari)

Taking a break this afternoon, I slipped away for a cup of cappuccino at the
cafe down the road. Basking in the afternoon sun, I sipped and settled in for
relaxation with some fine reading material - Rupert's letter! Unfortunately,
I believe Emma saw me and I fear that I may lose her confidence and help
entirely now...

Level 3-4 (The Safari)

I approached Emma cautiously today and asked if she had anything troublesome
on her mind. I need to figure out what is going on in her head if I can
expect to make the most of her. She acted surprised, however, that I would
even posit such a claim. I am not convinced, though. The wheels of her
feminine mind are working... and I fear they may start rolling away...

Level 3-5 (The Safari)

I have continued to grow my troop of mercenaries. Much importance must be
placed on the fact that this journey may not end without a battle. I will
continue to build a strong and impenetrable group against which that weakly
and bookish Rupert will not have a chance. I have created a troop of the
bravest and most savage men. No one will usurp Sebastian Grenard!

Level 3-6 (The Safari)

Emma must be removed from my life and my plan before she begins to work
against me. I cannot act in an offensive manner with stealth and precision
when I am uncertain of the one by my side. I have purchased a flight for her
to Spain. Tomorrow morning I will send her away under the guise of 'vacation'.
She'll never be the wiser...

Level 3-7 (The Safari)

I am furious! Emma is gone, taking only some food - not a single one of the
gifts that I had obtained for her. True, I wanted her out of my life, but I
wanted to be the one to do it! This is most disruptive to my plans! I don't
know where she is or what she's up to - but I'm certain it is not with my best
interest at heart! Oh, that miserable ninny...

LEVEL 3 COMPLETE

Look how this Great Zimbabwe has fallen to ruin. And to think of the
treasures that this city once housed! I shall make it known that I will offer
two bricks of gold to any villager who can tell me what Rupert discovered and
to where he has scampered off.

GREAT ZIMBABWE - 8 LEVELS

Level 4-1 (Great Zimbabwe)

Today I approached the Great Zimbabwe! True, I am without Emma, but no
regrets. Whether she is here with her book-laden Rupert or on the arm of
someone else, thousands of miles away, makes no difference to me. the Jewel
Board is close, and its fortune and rare beauty will lift me into a whole new
strata of society, in a way that no woman ever could.

Level 4-2 (Great Zimbabwe)

The ruins before me are immense. Drat! I am not quite sure what to do here.
The rocks just look like a bunch of garbage - and certainly far too much work
for my freshly manicured hands to go sifting through! I will have my men
search every brick while I supervise. That is the way the great leaders have
commanded and built fortunes!

Level 4-3 (Great Zimbabwe)

The men I have hired are quickly taking these most ruined of ruins apart, but
as it stands, I still do not understand how this will get me any closer to the
Jewel Board. The men seem not to have lost faith in my vision. As long as I
can maintain their pay, their allegiance to me will remain strong.

Level 4-4 (Great Zimbabwe)

I am concerned as these men continue to drop off like flies while
re-assembling the ruins. The back breaking work is too much under the
penetrating African sun and one by one these burly, healthy men are being
crushed by its mighty rays. Some men have even run off without their pay!
If I don't figure something out soon, my entire plan will be foiled!

Level 4-5 (Great Zimbabwe)

A man with brightly colored robes and a tremendous headdress is approaching...
Several less decorated men are trailing close behind him. By the looks of it,
I would guess he is a chieftain. Perhaps they know a thing or two about the
Jewel Board.

Level 4-6 (Great Zimbabwe)

The chief and his tribesmen approached brandishing silly spears and shields,
shouting in their ludicrous language. They motioned for us to all stand up.
I am rarely a man to give way to such barbaric signals and blatant displays of
authority, but in this case, I pretended to fear for my life in case these
natives have something useful to say...

Level 4-7 (Great Zimbabwe)

One of my men translated the chief's screams for me: "Leave now or face our
wrath!" I responded with this: "Any man who joins me and banishes this false
chief shall earn one gold piece for every tooth in his mouth." Given the poor
dental condition of these gents, my budget could handle such an extravagance.
Within moments, a good number of the tribesmen had pushed their way to my side
of the camp.

Level 4-8 (Great Zimbabwe)

The chief and his remaining few men fled. The newcomers pointed me to an
enormous obelisk, topped by a golden bird. We turned the bird around and the
obelisk sank like a giant switch. a hatch in a nearby dome opened. Yes!
Wherein, surely, lies the Jewel Board - and that menacing Rupert Pack!

LEVEL 4 COMPLETE

Aha! The waterfall is the perfect place to have hidden that Jewel Board
chamber. How clever! Should I run across that disobedient, double-dealing
Emma I will toss her into the rapids. Then we'll see if she can live up to
the name "Swimmingly". Nobody, no, nobody will usurp Sebastian Grenard!

VICTORIA FALLS - 10 LEVELS

Level 5-1 (Victoria Falls)

Alas that dome contained nothing but some words! Words, my translator tells
me, about a wall of water! A big argument ensued, but ultimately most of us
believed that this must be referring to the nearby Victoria Falls.

Level 5-2 (Victoria Falls)

So now we are at the falls, but they are immense, riddled with caverns,
boulders, and crags. a Jewel Board is nowhere in sight. How could this have
happened!?!? That fortune is so close, I can smell it - and yet - I can't see
it! Curses! All of my men are equally clueless.

Level 5-3 (Victoria Falls)

To all of my men - and anyone within earshot, for that matter, I have offered
the first giant jewel to whomever successfully leads me to the Jewel Board. I
will see to it that the person responsible will be given their due credit and
compensation. On my honor...

Level 5-4 (Victoria Falls)

It took days, but finally some good news. A little boy, a mere child, noticed
that a foreign man had set up camp on a ledge, deep in the falls. We check it
out and indeed - there is Rupert's hat at the foot of a grand cave. Success!
yet I am repulsed at the mere thought of that greasy, babbling kid getting his
hands on my jewel. And so, when nobody is looking, my men will make certain
that the child takes a swan dive deep into the jagged mist.

Level 5-5 (Victoria Falls)

At the mouth of the cave, my men prepared to ambush Rupert and whatever crew
he had assembled. In we rushed, our guns ablaze, expecting a true fight. And
lo and behold - there were only two people defending the treasure! That
pathetic twerp Rupert and, clutching him like a barnacle, my once-dear Emma
Swimmingly!

Level 5-6 (Victoria Falls)

Rupert and Emma were so naive, so unsuspecting - all it took was a harmless
blast of gunpowder to make them hit the floor and concede this Jewel Temple.
My men and I marched right in and held them in a chokehold. "You two aren't
good for much," I said. "But fine job leading me here!"

Level 5-7 (Victoria Falls)

Emma began to run her mouth as though she didn't quite understand how much
trouble she could be causing herself... and her beloved. Lashing out with
accusations of my `Soullessness` and `inhumanity`, that sill filly exhausted
herself. Then she said I was a thief; not a true collector. and that I had
no taste.

Level 5-8 (Victoria Falls)

I couldn't very well let Emma think she could get away with insulting my
impeccable sense of style, my taste, my sophistication! So I did the only
thing a man of style, taste and sophistication would do. I grabbed he by the
arm and dangled her over the falls! "No, Sebastian, no!," she screamed. "You
may be a coward but you're not a killer." Silly woman.

Level 5-9 (Victoria Falls)

I looked at Emma's frightened face and once again, mercy got the better of me.
What can I say? It's my weakness! So I brought her back up and let go. Emma
ran to Rupert and threw her arms around him. These two sickened me with their
love - so I made them a deal: They could embrace for eternity! We tossed
them into one of the far caves and had it sealed off with boulders and river
mud - strong enough to keep in an elephant.

Level 5-10 (Victoria Falls)

With those two lovesick rascals out of my sight, I had my men set up a
compound around the Jewel Board temple. Using pieces of what Rupert had
already constructed, I felt right at home within a matter of hours! And now
to begin the extraction of all this gold and jewels!

GRENARD'S REVENGE - CONCLUSION

WITH GOOD LOOKS, CHARM, PANACHE, AND BREEDING LIKE MINE, IS IT TRULY ANY
WONDER THAT I HAVE TRIUMPHED? HONESTLY, PLAYING FAIR WILL ONLY GET YOU SO
FAR - AND THAT IS NOT FAR ENOUGHT FOR SEBASTIAN GRENARD! NOW MY ONLY PROBLEM
IS FINDING ENOUGH ROOM IN MY COFFERS FOR THE FORTUNE I WILL AMASS!

LEVEL 5 COMPLETE

I have won and I am unstoppable! Question my tactics all you like, but
history shall write me as the victor! When all is said and done it is I who
will be remembered as the man who thwarted the fates and found and unlocked
the secrets behind the ancient Board.

HANI'S REGRET - CHAPTER IV

LIFE TAKES MANY TURNS. OLD AND SALTY FROM THE SEA, I HAVE LEARNED THAT SOME
OF THESE TURNS MAKE FOR SUNSHINE AND SOME OF THESE TURNS MAKE FOR RAIN.

FROM ORPHAN TO SAILOR, I HAVE COME FROM THE LOWEST DEPTHS OF POVERTY AND
DESPAIR, BUT ALSO SET AT TABLES WITH CAPTAINS AND KINGS. MY EYES HAVE SEEN
TOO MUCH AND YET MY SOUL STILL SEARCHES.

THE VOYAGE - 5 LEVELS

Level 1-1 (The Voyage)

On the sea, `now` is no different from `then`. I am a man of the ocean and I
intend to see out my days on the rough, open waters. My legs were made for
the shifts of the undertow, my hands for the unforgiving splinter of deckwork,
my eyes for keen observation of danger in the wavecrest, and my soul for the
wherewithal to work calmly upon the giant beast they call sea.

Level 1-2 (The Voyage)

On the voyage, I am working under the guidance of Capt'n Joseph Verba on a
luxury cruise. These jaunts for the upper class usually mean a lot of
complaining and posturing by ungrateful snobs, but today I had a happy

surprise as I spoke with a passenger. Her name was Emma swimmingly, and she's
knowledgeable about all ancient cultures. I look forward to talking with her
more.

Level 1-3 (The Voyage)

Emma told me a bit about her studies, her interests, and most surprisingly,
her romantic life. She told me about leaving a man named Rupert - the same
Rupert whom I'd sent in search of that Jewel Board! Such a passionate and
learned man was he, such a great solver of Jewel puzzles, I gently reprimanded
her for having ever left him.

Level 1-4 (The Voyage)

Not only did Emma leave Rupert, but she is on this cruise with such a dirty
rat! a fellow named Sebastian Grenard. This slimeball has been at my heels
for days now trying to get information from me regarding the great continent
of Africa and everything and anything I might know about the Jewel Board.

Level 1-5 (The Voyage)

There is something I don't quite trust about this Sebastian man. He talks
with charm, but his empty eyes are ones I recognize the world over - this very
war and all its evils are due to men with eyes like his. Why is it so typical
that a rarity like Emma winds up with a man of his ilk?

LEVEL 1 COMPLETE

I drop off into Dakar, eager for some rest and some human companionship. This
port is nothing but desperation and danger. My every step puts me at risk.
Nothing I haven't been through dozens of times before.

BAZAAR - 6 LEVELS

Level 2-1 (Bazaar)

We ported today at Dakar. The bazaar sends wild, savory scents wafting
straight up to the deck. In the distance I can see bright cloths waving in
the wind, straw baskets hanging from tall poles. I can't wait to get on land
and indulge in a hot Senegalese dinner. A fish stew will fill the hole in my
belly. I'll then try to find a proper mattress to rest my weary bones.

Level 2-2 (Bazaar)

Walking on solid ground always feels strange to an old seadog like me. I look
forward to staying at the Marrakesh Hostel -- the innkeeper's kindness still
resonates in my heart. After having to spend time aboard with spoiled rich
puffer fish like that Frenchman, Sebastian, I am all too anxious to settle in
with some good folks for a spell.

Level 2-3 (Bazaar)

As luck should have it, Sebastian knocked at my door, awaking me. He
approached me once again about the Jewel Board, offering an astronomical sum
if I provide useful information. I have tired of his constant badgering.
That man is making me remember more and more each day why the only sounds I
truly love are the crash of waves and the calls of gulls. Humans do nothing
but carry on just to hear themselves talk.

Level 2-4 (Bazaar)

I care not how forceful Sebastian becomes, I will continue to keep my lips
sealed about the Giant African Jewel Board. I have spent my entire life in
awe of the board and I intend to show only the utmost respect for it and its
secrets.

Level 2-5 (Bazaar)

Argh! I am finally free! But what a horrific few night! Where to begin? I
had just gotten to sleep again when a crew of Dakar police burst in! They put
me in cuffs, blindfolded me, and dragged me off. As violent as my temper
became, I knew better than to resist. They then tied me to a chair with
cables so tight they cut into my skin.

Level 2-6 (Bazaar)

Men came in and questioned me every hour. Each time I said that I knew
nothing. Days passed. My thirst and hunger overcame me. I held out for a
long time I tell you, but finally I decided that there was no use holding back
the truth. Even knowing about the golden mask, men like these will not be
wise enough to unearth the Jewel. And so I spoke. Soon after, they dropped
me off at the waterfront where I lapped at an old puddle like a parched dog.

LEVEL 2 COMPLETE

All my life, I have tried to avoid confronting others, but this is too much.
That Sebastian Grenard cannot be allowed to win. I don't know Rupert and Emma
well, but I do know that they are people who believe in equality and humanity.
What am I alive for if not to rise to this quest and help people like them?

THE SAFARI - 7 LEVELS

Level 3-1 (The Safari)

Good and evil are supposedly concepts innate to all cultures. But I have come
to the conclusion that only the children whom are shown true good can continue
to practice it as adults. Some people are just incapable of understanding
goodness. And so in the end I do not hate, but I pity Sebastian and his type,
and it is for this reason I must do my part to be sure Sebastian does not find
the Jewel Board.

Level 3-2 (The Safari)

As I walk these barren plains contemplating my next move, I am consumed by
images of Rupert struggling to find his way after leaving our ship. I wonder
what has become of him and whether or not he has satiated his thirst for
knowledge. And what of Emma? Did I misjudge here? Is she knowingly part of
Sebastian's evil plans?

Level 3-3 (The Safari)

The savanna moon is full tonight. I find myself yearning for the calm glow of
moonlight as it reflects off an entire ocean. In my life, clam is something
I've rarely had the joy of encountering. I am hopeful that I will be able to
slow down and enjoy the land, these magnificent animals, and the local peoples
as I trek toward the Jewel Board. I may look fierce, but I am a gentle soul
and I wish to live my life that way.

Level 3-4 (The Safari)

As I walk this path, I find my checks wet. I know not why I cry. If my
sailing mates could see me now, a swarthy old deckhand defeated by a teardrop!
Alas, I will not take this as a sign of weakness, but I certainly am glad I'm
here alone!

Level 3-5 (The Safari)

Off in the distance I saw a glimmering heap. Unable to tell what it was, I
approached cautiously, but about three yards away I could make out that it was
a discarded Jeep. The bumper had fallen off and the side mirrors were
twisted, but it was clear to me to see that a couple hours work would have it
up and running.

Level 3-6 (The Safari)

I quickly fixed the broken fuel lines and pieced the other parts back
together. Amazingly, the fuel hold still contained a bit of petrol. What a
thrill to use my hands for constructive work again!

Level 3-7 (The Safari)

I've loaded the Jeep with my pack and am about to set off for the Great
Zimbabwe! A true journey has begun and I feel like I have the power of a
pride of lions coursing through my veins as I hotwire this vehicle for the
ride of my life! I am anxious to begin a new adventure as I head farther into
the wilds!

LEVEL 3 COMPLETE

Finally, after hearing so much about the Great Zimbabwe, it lies before me.
But now what? How shall I ever find the next path? I suppose, as usual, I
must try to solve these agonizing jewel puzzles presented before me and hope
that they lead to an answer.

GREAT ZIMBABWE - 8 LEVELS

Level 4-1 (Great Zimbabwe)

This age-old city is wondrous. Many orphan children live and play among these
ruins. Amazingly, though there's not a splash of water in sight, I feel quite
at home.

Level 4-2 (Great Zimbabwe)

When I was a child, I was left in a cave not far off the southernmost tip of
Africa. I have never met my parents and I have fended for myself since my
earliest memories. One day, while foraging for food, I came across a group of
men. They were excitable and in a great hurry. As a young boy, their
excitement thrilled me and I joined their wild pack.

Level 4-3 (Great Zimbabwe)

Like me the men had no language save grunts, laughs, and screams. But we knew
each other's thoughts intimately, nonetheless. We scoured the landscape like
any other pack of animals, hunting for our daily bread and searching for a
nightly safe haven.

Level 4-4 (Great Zimbabwe)

The men came to take me as one of their own, yet I was not treated as their
child, but rather as a peer - and in doing so, I was taught by nature to fight
with passion and to defend with honor.

Level 4-5 (Great Zimbabwe)

While walking through the brush one day, our group found itself very hungry.
We were tired and listless. Our stomachs growled and our hearts sank with the
notion that food was nothing but a silly daydream, seeing as a fire had
recently swept through the plains and any plants that were once edible were
now torched.

Level 4-6 (Great Zimbabwe)

And so it is that we split up, each of us in a different direction. My path
took me to a sailing vessel named The S.S. Wolf where I learned my first
words, scrubbed my first decks, and got my first taste of the wide world. I
wonder what fate the others found.

Level 4-7 (Great Zimbabwe)

Learning languages was intoxicating! as I journeyed from land to land, I
talked to everyone I could and picked up French, German, Portuguese, English,
Afrikaans, as well as numerous other dialects. I noticed that among learned
men there was a unique treasure that seemed to come up in the lore of almost
every culture: A game built upon a square board involving the interchange of
jewels.

Level 4-8 (Great Zimbabwe)

I do not know where I came across my knowledge of the African Jewel Board, but
apparently that board was the original - the largest and most precious of all.
And here I am in the Great Zimbabwe, but no board is to be found. Alas, the
locals tell me that a whole band of ne'er-do-wells has set off towards
Victoria Falls. Perhaps there I shall find what I seek.

LEVEL 4 COMPLETE

A humbling mountain of water thunders and spews up ahead. Soldiers dressed in
leopard skins and carrying machine guns keep guard over a large complex. That
must be where that Sebastian Grenard roosts. But where could he be keeping
Rupert and Emma -- supposing, of course, that they are still alive at all...?

VICTORIA FALLS - 10 LEVELS

Level 5-1 (Victoria Falls)

I've approached the Falls. My heart beats fast and my excitement mounts!
Clearly there's something going on here - the place is crawling with armed
men. But where is Rupert? Where is Sebastian? And is there really such a
thing as this giant board?

Level 5-2 (Victoria Falls)

Late last night, I snuck into the base camp and overheard the chatter of two
drunk sentries. Apparently, Rupert, as well as his lady love Emma are being
held captive in a cave - trapped there until the elements return them to the
dust from which they rose!

Level 5-3 (Victoria Falls)

The morning sun is hot on my face and my mind is alert as I figure out how to
navigate my way around this enormous cave. I think I've found the place, but
large boulders block the way. I use a large branch to dig around the bae of
each boulder. It is backbreakig work. But by nightfall I have budged the
first boulder away from this makeshift tomb.

Level 5-4 (Victoria Falls)

I can only imagine at this point what kind of condition Rupert and Emma are
in. I must hurry! Their lives surely depend on it! But at this rate it will
take several more days. And that's if I'm not discovered!

Level 5-5 (Victoria Falls)

The sun is beginning to fall behind the mountains and I am fearful that with
little daylight left, I will be unable to locate Rupert and Emma before I must
give up for the night. My will is strong and I will not be thwarted. A man's
friends should be treated like precious jewels and I will stop at nothing
tonight to make sure that Rupert and Emma are rescued! And so I dig with
superhuman strength.

Level 5-6 (Victoria Falls)

A soldier came upon me "Who are you?" he asked, in French. I pretended to not
understand. I pointed to my belly, then my mouth. "No food here, old man.
Move on!" he shouted.

Level 5-7 (Victoria Falls)

I hate to resort to violence, but time is of the essence here. With a simple
sweep kick, I bring the soldier to the ground. Within moments I have stripped
him of his weapon, stuffed his mouth with his hat, and left him confused and
stumbling, but not injured - I'm no Sebastian!

Level 5-8 (Victoria Falls)

I have heard a story in which great misfortune comes to those who try to
misuse the Jewel Board for financial gain. The board is to remain untarnished
by greed and injustices. As far as I am concerned, Sebastian has already
tarnished the history of the Jewel Board - but perhaps I can redeem it! And
so I dig...

Level 5-9 (Victoria Falls)

I believe I hear voices! When I put my ear to the ground I can follow the
vibrations of their cries. Rupert and Emma sound weak, but alive. I pound on
the rocks to let them know I am near, and the voices stop. Aha! The meager
strength in their voices gives me hope!

Level 5-10 (Victoria Falls)

I have found the pair. As their eyes get used to light again, they stare,
unsure who I am. "It is me, Hani!" I shout. Rupert smiles for a moment, but
then faints. Emma, too, falls to her knees and weeps. They are in very bad
shape, but now is no time to focus on the negative. I bring a basin of water
to their parched lips and let drops fall to their mouths from my fingers. Not
so long ago, I too was in this shape. But now what to do?

HANI'S REGRET - CONCLUSION

I NEARLY HAD TO RAG RUPERT AND EMMA ACROSS THE PLAINS, MOUNTAIN PASSES, AND
JUNGLES. I FED THEM BITS OF FOOD AND WATER AND TRY TO KEEP THEM OUT OF THE
ELEMENTS. IT TOOK WEEKS... FINALLY I MANAGED TO GET THEM ON AN AMERICAN
BATTLESHIP HEADED BACK TO NORTH CAROLINA. I KNOW HOW MUCH THEY HATE TO
ABANDON THE JEWEL BOARD, BUT THEY MUST ESCAPE THIS SCOURGE OF MISERY, WAR, AND
SEBASTIAN GRENARD. IF AND WHEN THEY REGAIN THEIR HEALTH, PERHAPS THE QUEST
CAN CONTINUE.

LEVEL 5 COMPLETE

I am not a competitive man, but I am fortunate to possess a clever wit and a
knack for playing to win. I am grateful for being given the chance to rescue
Rupert and Emma -- though they seem more dead than alive. I must take them to
safety.

******************************************************************************

BACK TO AFRICA - CHAPTER V

IT TOOK NEARLY A YEAR FOR US TO REGAIN OUR PRIOR STRENGTH, BUT IN TIME EMMA
AND I NEVER LEFT EACH OTHER'S SIDE. TOGETHER, WE ARE DEDICATED TO RECOVERING
THAT JEWEL BOARD AND USING ITS SECRETS FOR GOOD -- NOT FOR MERE FINANCIAL
GAIN.

IT FEELS SO INCREDIBLE TO BE OUT ON THE OPEN SEAS AGAIN! I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT
I'M GETTING READY TO EMBARK ON THIS ARDUOUS QUEST ONCE AGAIN.

BUT THIS TIME I HAVE EMMA WITH ME, AND TOGETHER WE CAN'T, NAY, WON'T BE
STOPPED.

THE VOYAGE - 5 LEVELS

Level 1-1 (The Voyage)

We sail further and further away from Africa and that spectacular Jewel Board,
but I am so very thankful! Emma was so brave and our love for each other saw
us through our internment, but it was Hani's keen intuition and heart for
justice that really saw us through.

Level 1-2 (The Voyage)

I am worried about Emma. She is getting weaker by the day on this infernal
ship. The time in the cave wreaked havoc on her immune system and she has a
persistent cough. Of course, she pretends as though she is fine, but I know
it is only a brave front for the distress this must be causing her.

Level 1-3 (The Voyage)

Seeing Emma's health decline day after day and knowing that Sebastian is to
blame infuriates me. But I'm in no shape for revenge... Yet. I can hardly
walk one lap around the deck before collapsing with exhaustion.

Level 1-4 (The Voyage)

The winds are high today and this old ship swings back and forth like a giant
pendulum. The anger and confusion I feel today on this vessel reminds me of
my first such journey under Captain Hallinan's direction. Though, of course
much sweeter, as now I have Emma to keep me warm at night... and Hani's tales
to keep me occupied by day.

Level 1-5 (The Voyage)

As Emma becomes more ill, Hani and H have slipped the captain the last of our
jewels to requisition a rowboat. It's a risk, but the seas are calm and we're
only a few knots from Cape Town. Perhaps there we can find a clinic with a
bit of penicillin and urgent care.

LEVEL 1 COMPLETE

We walk off this boat like honey-mooners about to embark on a seaside romp.
But having been through this once before, I know that what we face will be a
total test of our patience, intelligence, and resolve. Until we regain the
Jewel Board, a piece of the bond that links Rupert and I together will be
missing.

BAZAAR - 6 LEVELS

Level 2-1 (Bazaar)

We've docked, and I'm in a hospital bed. I don't know where. I thought we
were heading back to New York, but the nurses here are most definitely
African. I sleep most of the day, my memory a blur. Every so often I see
Rupert gazing down on me kindly, stroking my hair, but is it real or an
hallucination? Am I even alive?

Level 2-2 (Bazaar)

Oh! Joy of joys! My health has begun to improve. I can now digest solid
food. Earlier this afternoon, Rupert held my hand, got down on one knee, and
asked me to be his forever. "Yes, yes, yes!" I nearly screamed. "I'm sorry
I don't have so much as a cloudy topaz to give you," Rupert apologized.

Level 2-3 (Bazaar)

This morning we bade farewell to Hani, who will help run a vessel bound for
Europe. With the raging war up there, I do hope he stays safe. We truly owe
him everything - this man who we hardly knew. He left us with the name of an
innkeeper he trusts as well as one last word of advice: "Don't turn away from
the Jewel Board. You will forever regret it."

Level 2-4 (Bazaar)

Heeding Hani's words, we shall return to rescue the Jewel Board. But what can
two bedraggled paupers like Rupert and I do against a man like Sebastian, a
man with infinite resources and snake-like cunning? We stay up until dawn
trying to figure something out, but wind up with no plan other than to head
back into the heart of Africa, back to the dreaded Victoria Falls.

Level 2-5 (Bazaar)

We ask around and hear stories of Sebastian. In the months we've spent
recuperating, Sebastian and his cronies have set up a mammoth hunthing lodge
on the shores of the Zambezi. From this lodge he exports diamonds, emeralds,
and gold in exchange for bombs, armaments, and munitions. These he then marks
up and ships to the Axis front.

Level 2-6 (Bazaar)

Apparently, Sebastian not only has most of the local populace in his pocket,
but also the ragtag armies of Zaire and Zimbabwe. Everyone refers to him, in
hushed undertones, as "The Jeweler." I shudder to think that I once
considered that slime my potential soul mate.

LEVEL 2 COMPLETE

As I trek through the open plains once more, I am thrilled to now share this
experience with Emma. at last, instead of having to write detailed letters
feebly describing all the wonders I experienced, the love of my life gets to
share the same moments with me.

THE SAFARI - 7 LEVELS

Level 3-1 (The Safari)

And so we've decided to once again journey as we both did, independently, in
a not so distant past. But why? Is it just my own arrogance and bravado that
makes me drag Emma closer to our nemesis? This can't end well, can it?

Level 3-2 (The Safari)

Emma and I dined at a small village, deep in the lowlands. The air from the
nearby lake supplied me with memories of a time not so long ago, half dead on
that cargo ship. My! How the course of my life has twisted and turned.
Delight fills my heart today where darkness and depression once coveted every
crevasse of it.

Level 3-3 (The Safari)

The waiter at the restaurant, noting that we are from the States, curiously
questioned the purpose of our journey. As he re-filled our glasses of honey
wine, he told us his encounter with the famous Jeweler and his entourage.
"A Frenchman of the highest taste," he said. "But with one very basic
weakness..."

Level 3-4 (The Safari)

The waiter went on to tell us that the Frenchman is wildly allergic to shell-
fish, and nearly had to be given CPR after accidentally ingesting a broth made
from prawn. Most interesting... We order an extra order of river shrimp to
go...

Level 3-5 (The Safari)

We borrow a phone and call ahead, trying to book ourselves a room at
Sebastian's Limpopo Lodge under the name Mr. and Mrs. Ruby. The receptionist
tells us that the lodge has no vacancies, and has filled up with a very
exclusive clientele including politicians and movie stars.

Level 3-6 (The Safari)

Despite our impossible quest ahead, I attempt to savor the jeep ride through
the stark savanna, Emma at my side. This is how it should have been all
along. I squeeze her hand as we speed through a chaotic traffic jam of
elephant and wildebeest.

Level 3-7 (The Safari)

Half way to the Great Zimbabwe, we decided to rest for the night. Coming upon
a bright lantern, we happened across the small, warm inn that Hani told us
about. The owner was a friendly old woman named Lila. She gave us a hot meal
after we had washed up. She says that it is not often that young couples stay
at her inn, adding that she usually tends to lonesome and disheveled
wanderers.

LEVEL 3 COMPLETE

Rupert and I are exhausted at the gateway to the Great Zimbabwe. How
wonderful it would be to have a hot bath and a warm meal tonight. But the
closer we get to the falls, the more I begin to wonder -- how do we think
we'll ever infiltrate Sebastian's fortified compound and wrench the Jewel
Board from his greedy grasp?

GREAT ZIMBABWE - 8 LEVELS

Level 4-1 (Great Zimbabwe)

Awaking this morning, I smelled the strong aroma of coffee boiling on the
stovetop and scones baking in the hearth. What a wonderful way to begin the
day! I ran downstairs, leaving Rupert to sleep and had a splendid
conversation with Lila the innkeeper. She was notably interested in my
romance with Rupert...

Level 4-2 (Great Zimbabwe)

Wanting to know every detail of our tumultuous relationship, Lila took a
special interest in my stories of my time with Sebastian. She rightfully
reasoned that what Rupert and I have is, indeed, true love. But she cautioned
sternly against having contact with a man like Sebastian Grenard.

Level 4-3 (Great Zimbabwe)

As it turns out, it is Rupert's turn to have taken ill. He has a volcanic
fever and spends his days wrapped in his blanket, staring at the spider webs
in the ceiling and muttering about groups of jewels and a golden board.

Level 4-4 (Great Zimbabwe)

Lila helps me care for Rupert, spooning broth into him and covering his fore-
head with cool rags. His face looks as white as alabaster, and his eyes
bloodshot and swimming with delusions. For a while there, it looked
precarious, but one night Rupert's fever broke and he seemed to regain some
color.

Level 4-5 (Great Zimbabwe)

As Rupert recovered, I'd lie beside him as he told me about his time spent
studying the Jewel Board. At first, he took weeks diagramming every
intricacy, too frightened to touch a jewel and upset things. Finally,
however, he arranged the jewels into groups of three rubies, three sapphires,
three diamonds, as spoken about in the ancient myths.

Level 4-6 (Great Zimbabwe)

When combined in groups of three, some mechanism in the room-sized board
caused the jewels to drop within, turning the squares to solid gold, as well
as unleashing a torrent of yet more jewels. Rupert then tried making matches
of four and more - but as much as he tried he could never turn that board
entirely gold.

Level 4-7 (Great Zimbabwe)

As I leave Rupert's quarters, I find Lila outside the door. She has a guilty
look on her face, as if she were listening in. "So you know about the Jewel
Board?" she asks. "I too spent my life trying to conquer it. It can't be
done, I tell you. It just can't."

Level 4-8 (Great Zimbabwe)

We pack up that night and head back on the road to the Great Zimbabwe! Lila
was such a sweet woman, but we decided that we ought to err on the side of
caution and so we left without bidding farewell to her. If there is anything
I have learned, it is that you cannot judge a book by its cover.

LEVEL 4 COMPLETE

Here we stand, me and my brave Emma, bracing off against a veritable army of
mercenaries. Emma thinks she can charm Sebastian and trick him into giving up
the board. If anyone could do it, Emma could. But how can I risk losing her?
What if that sociopath decides to rip her from me once and for all? Or worse,
what if she willingly leaves me for him once again...

VICTORIA FALLS - 10 LEVELS

Level 5-1 (Victoria Falls)

We arrived at Victoria falls an hour ago and we are now on a rickety bus
headed toward the hunting lodge at the top of the cliff. The place has been
utterly transformed from a miracle of nature to a hotbed of military activity,
violent commotion, and universal bad will.

Level 5-2 (Victoria Falls)

Standing outside the lodge's front door, the roar of a waterfall is deafening.
And the sights are breathtaking! Of course we are now in a conundrum as to
how to get into the lodge without being suspicious. Even if there were
vacancies, we are looking far too disheveled these days to appear as guests.
We spy a back door for employees only.

Level 5-3 (Victoria Falls)

Ha! That Emma! She is so full of ingenuity! As we started to move into the
Lodge Emma bumped into a large stuffed elephant. The toppling pachyderm
taxidermy caused such a commotion that the staff's attention was diverted long
enough for us to sneak into a back room and grab concierge uniforms. Upon
changing, no one was the wiser that we did not belong there!

Level 5-4 (Victoria Falls)

We make an odd pair of concierges, but no one seems to be the wiser. And so
we walk stiffly through hallways lined with young, trigger-happy soldiers,
trying to find Sebastian's whereabouts. We make our way into the kitchen
where a large leopard is being roasted up as the day's special treat.

Level 5-5 (Victoria Falls)

Emma, having learned of Sebastian's allergy while we dined together, took a
chance and slipped a handful of the shrimp into the evening meal. The stew
bubbled on the stove and Emma assured me that the shellfish would surely take
down Sebastian. She cleaned her hands - and just in time - as a chef came in
waving his cleaver at us, ordering us lowly bellhops out of his domain.

Level 5-6 (Victoria Falls)

And so we stand at the side of the dining hall, quiet and unnoticed. Finally,
the Jeweler himself, Sebastian Grenard, struts in. Everyone turns and
applauds him. He gives a little bow and take a seat at the frontmost booth,
flanked by a half dozen bodyguards the size of mountain rhinos.

Level 5-7 (Victoria Falls)

Sebastian has just run to the restroom. He's green - and for once it's not
with greed! We quickly follow him, pushing his bodyguards aside. "I'm a
doctor," I shout. I do indeed have a PhD. He writhes on the bathroom floor,
desperately trying to undo his necktie. When he sees us he tries to scream,
but his throat is too far closed up. Emma reaches into his pocket and removes
the Jewel Board keystone, giving us access to the golden chamber.

Level 5-8 (Victoria Falls)

The paramedics carted Sebastian away, shaking their heads. We hear that his
entire body has clenched up, unable to move. A shame. I do believe that Emma
and I can now work to dismantle his operation and regain access to the Jewel
Board. What joy it brings me to know that I am free to continue my research,
love the woman in my life, and most importantly maintain the integrity of the
Jewel Board.

Level 5-9 (Victoria Falls)

Hani has just shown up at the Limpopo Lodge. He's been desperately trying to
track us down because he has decided that he wants to be the one to preside
over Emma's and my nuptials! He has been ordained by a local chief and wishes
his first rite performance to be one filled with love, so he has chosen us.
I'm getting married come morning light..!

Level 5-10 (Victoria Falls)

Emma and I are now husband and wife. Hani performed a beautiful African
ceremony at the waterfalls edge. Just as we exchanged our first kiss as
husband and wife, a great explosion rattled the ground and a geyser of
hundreds of tiny uncut jewels shot up through the sky. Apparently the Jewel
Board is as happy to find us, as we are it.

CONGRATS!

JEWEL QUEST II - CONCLUSION

PASSION IS MAN'S OLY DEFENSE AGAINST AN OFTEN COLD, CRUEL WORLD. OF COURSE,
FOCUSING TOO HARD ON ONE PASSION CAN ALSO BE MAN'S DOWNFALL. I HAVE LEARNED
THAT MAINTAING MODERATION IS THE KEY TO LIFE'S RICHES. WHILE I ONCE FOOL-
HARDILY LOST EMMA BECAUSE OF MY INTENSE DEVOTION TO RESEARCH, I AM NOW A
CHANGED MAN. I HAVE LEARNED THE VALUE OF FOLLOWING YOUR LIFE'S DREAMS WHILE
ALSO ADHERING TO YOUR HEART.

MY QUEST FOR THE JEWEL BOARD HAS IMPARTED UPON ME COUNTLESS INTELLECTUAL
THRILLS, BUT IT IS MY QUEST FOR EMMA'S HEART THAT HAS MATTERED TO ME THE MOST.
EMMA IS A JEWEL BEYOND ALL OTHERS.
