Hello there, and thank you for relying on me for all of your cooking needs
while you explore Terca Lumireis! I've bought the Brady Games guide for ToV,
and let me tell you ...it sucks. (x_x) So instead, I will help you discover
the wonder and fun of cooking in Bandai Namco's Tales of Vesperia!* This
guide is a work in progress (as well as my very first). Some of this guide
might be repetitive. I've organized it so you can jump to the parts you are
concerned about if you can't be bothered to read everything~ Onward!! ( 'o')/
Oh yes, I shall define what I am referring to when I use certain terms
in this guide.
MAIN MENU -- Press 'Y' when you are not in battle to bring this up. Here you
will have access to your Artes, Equipment, Item, Skills, Strategy, Cooking,
Status, Library and Save/Load menus.
COOKING SCREEN -- The screen that is brought up when you select the Cooking
icon after opening you open the Main Menu. This is where you can cook if you
do not use a shortcut.
COOKING RESULT BOX -- The box that pops up on the Cooking Screen after you
have cooked a recipe. Contains details of your results.
BATTLE SCREEN MENU -- At the end of a battle, the 4 green bars at the bottom
right of the screen.
SHORTCUT MENU -- In the Cooking Screen, if you press LS down, you can set
the shortcuts to cook after battle.
*Note, FAQ may be 80% helpful, 20% commentary and 10% pointing out Brady
Games' cooking-related errors. Yes, this FAQ goes beyond 100% coverage!
Firstly, if you didn't know already, you have 7 characters who can cook, and
in ToV, you don't have to worry about one character's food being less
effective than another's. Except Repede. He's a dog. He makes -- wait for it
-- dog food. ....Yum. However, that food will still give you a little boost!
(But seriously, don't waste the ingredients. ...Unless you get some
sort of pleasure imagining Karol face-first in a bowl of Kibbles 'n Bits.)
Um, anyway, each character can get a fancy chef-related title if they master
all(!) recipes and complete the cooking-master sidequest, which you will need
to do if you want to unlock the title achievement.
Here's our lineup of chefs in the making and those titles we're gunning for:
Yuri -- Commoner Chef
Estelle -- Cordon Bleu
Karol -- Guild Chef
Rita -- Chemical Chef
Raven -- Weekend Chef
Judith -- Chef Mom
Repede
Have some cooking facts to chew on:
-- You will not be able to cook until Yuri teaches Estelle in Quoi Woods, so
sit tight until then.
-- You cannot cook while in battle. That'd be pretty silly. Save your victory
feast until afterwards.
-- You can set up to 4 different recipes on the Shortcut Menu.
-- Cooking benefits your entire party, not just one person.
-- Dead people can't eat, so if you cook while Yuri's KO'd, he's not going to
get anything out of it.
-- You cannot cook more than once after a battle. Something about your
characters being full... (imagine that!)
-- You do not get a costume with your chef title :(
-- Your characters are finicky when it comes to their meals; some like certain
foods more than others and some dislike them more than others. THIS IS
REFLECTED on your character's stats, so you might want to pay attention to
what you are feeding them.
And now...
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+++ THE BEST INFORMATION YOU WILL EVER RECEIVE CONCERNING COOKING IN TOV! +++
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
-- Your characters get tired of eating the same thing over and over again!!
--> Each time you immediately repeat a recipe (i.e. fight, cook sorbet;
fight, cook sorbet), it will lose potency by a rate of 1% until it reaches a
set low (usually 3% less than it should). It does not matter if a different
character cooks or if you fail at one point (believe me, I've checked (-_-)),
the potency will still drop by 1%. Therefore IT IS IMPERATIVE for you to mix
up your recipes in order to get the most out of your ingredients and money!!
>>> Why cook? >>> [S3.1]
It's all about saving money and group benefits.
Cooking can be a cheap alternative to buying lots of gels and bottles, and if
you're aiming to unlock the 10 million Gald achievement, you'll need to pinch
your pennies! Plus, when you sucessfully cook, your -entire party- gains the
benefits, ranging from HP and TP recovery to status recovery to an increase
in attack, defense or agility. Let's say, for example, that your party has
been injured in a fight and two characters are poisoned. Assuming that the
characters' damage is 30% of their HP or less, let's compare the cost of
cooking a Beef Bowl vs. recovery items:
Recovery items -- 30% HP recovery & cures poison
Apple Gel (4 x 100g) 400g
Poison Bottle (2 x 150g) 300g
-----
Total: 700g
Sure, the Beef Bowl recovers 10% less than the gels & bottles, but you could
cook 3 beef bowls and still save 70g vs that one recovery set (700g - [3 x
210g =] 630g = 70g)! OK, OK, so you can't cook twice in a row (it's a shame
your characters don't have bottomless stomachs), but you can top off a low
HP or two with Estelle's First Aid if necessary (she recovers 25% HP for 6 TP
each).
Does that 10% really bother you? It does? OK, have a look at curry then:
OK, so we've spent 10-70g more and we still have 2 poisoned people to cure.
Not a problem. Even using the most expensive meat, it will cost 580g if you
use 2 poison bottles. Or Estelle can use Recover (14 TP per use) and save
you 300g.
But supposing you just use Estelle to heal instead? If she heals each
wounded character with First Aid (6 TP) and cures the poison with Recover (14
TP), it costs her only 52 TP ([4 x 6TP =] 24TP + [2 x 14TP =] 28TP = 52TP),
and one orange gel (250g) will cover the TP cost if she is level 20 or
higher.* However, you can still cook a cake (30% party TP recovery) for the
cost of only 60g (eggs, milk & strawberries cost 20g each). You still save
190g AND this benefits the entire party ([1 orange gel x 250g =] 250g - [20g
+ 20g + 20g =] 60g = 190g).
There is the fact that Estelle can equip various items to reduce her TP
consumption or to increase her TP, but if other party members need TP as
well, cooking is still the way to go to top it off.
Oh, what if we synthesize those gels and bottles as opposed to buying them?
Can we save money that way?
Not enough. To synthesize the same recovery set above, it will cost you 524g.
You can still cook 2 Beef Bowls for less than that price.
(4 apple gels x 75g =) 300g + (2 poison bottles x 112g =) 224g = 524g
What about Estelle's orange gel? Still better off with the cake as it's still
127g cheaper.
(1 orange gel x 187g =) 187g - (20g + 20g + 20g =) 60g = 127g
* Estelle's level 20 TP is 196. (196 x 30% = 59 TP)
>>> Shortcuts >>> [S3.2]
Should you bother?
I'd say 'yes.' Shortcuts enable you to cook immediately after battle without
having to open the Main Menu. To be honest, you will probably only run into 1
or 2 situations where you are forced to fight one battle after another. You
won't have a chance to bring up your Main Menu to cook in between, so this is
your only chance to heal without wasting recovery items. Although I have not
gotten there yet, I can pretty much guarantee your final boss will not be
considerate enough to ask if you want a break and will come at you 1 or 2
more times with no breather. Another good example of back-to-back battles
would be in the Coliseum (OK, so it's a melee battle in ToV instead of the
usual Coliseum set-up, but there's still one instance where you fight
back-to-back by yourself). Plus, no one can revive you when you're one-on-one,
so cooking shortcuts are really going to help you out here. There might be
other times, though, when after a tough fight the story might force your
characters into a new situation before you get a chance to open up the Main
Menu and cook, and either through forgetfulness or bad luck, you could find
yourself in a battle with your characters in nowhere-near-perfect condition.
Maybe. However, I say the convenience of the shortcut is very nice. It can get
a bit repetitive to open the Cooking Screen again and again, battle after
battle. Save those precious seconds of your life for something better! (Like
playing other Tales games. =P)
Setting up the shortcut menu is pretty easy. From the Cooking Screen, hit LS
down and select your first shortcut. Then, select your chef and the recipe.
Repeat 3 more times for your other slots. Make sure you choose different
recipes (see above)! BAM! You're set to cook from the Battle Screen Menu. How
do you do that? First, go fight something. Maybe you'll pick up some more
ingredients. That's always nice. 10 million Gald IS a lot... Anyway, after
you win, you'll notice along the bottom right of the screen some options (B
Skip, Y Grade detail & LS + X Cook). Move the LS to see a description pop up
in the previously empty green bar below. It'll tell you what you've set as
your recipe for that direction. Move the LS in another direction and you'll
see a different recipe and description (unless you set the same recipe on all
the shortcuts. Didn't I tell you not to!? Pay attention!). Select the recipe
you want and press 'X.' Hooray! You've cooked it! Here's hoping you didn't
fail!
>>> Likes and Dislikes >>> [S3.3]
Your characters have their own likes and dislikes in food (as pointed out by
ReroTheZero), and this knowledge is a key to understanding benefits of your
recipes as well as unlocking certain skits (see Section 8.2 for skits). When
a character likes something, they will receive an extra bonus on top of the
recipe's results; when they dislike the recipe, they do not receive the full
benefits. Makes sense, right? Just imagine Karol grabbing an extra helping of
sushi or Raven not eating all of his Cake. Karol gets more magic defense than
others and Raven gets less TP than others because of their eating habits. Ha
ha, isn't this fun? The recipes don't work evenly!
Interestingly, the crew prefers Dog Food over a ruined recipe, although the
effectiveness of the recipe is not any different. Also, despite liking Dog
Food, Repede does not get an extra bonus.
The following is a work in progress, but I will try to note how our characters
feel about each recipe. (In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if, by the time this
FAQ reaches version 1.0, this has become it's own full-blown section as the
bonuses seem to vary for each character/recipe x_x.)

How can you tell is a character doesn't like something? Watch the background
in the cooking screen when you fail a recipe. All the characters make a face
(it's the same one they make when they finish a battle with a status effect
or very low HP). Conversely, when a character likes something, they make the
face seen at the end of a successful battle. Their reactions do not change
if they are neutral about a recipe. The following is a description of their
reactions:
LIKES DISLIKES
Estelle -- Smiles* One eye closed
Judith --- Smiles* Both eyes closed
Karol ---- Lifts head up a bit* One eye closed
Raven ---- Head moves to the left Head shifts to the right a bit*
Rita ----- Manic grin Both eyes closed
Repede --- Tilts head up* Head points down
Yuri ----- Raises head slightly* Bit of a grimace*
*It can be very difficult to discern these faces from normal.
>>> The Best Recipes >>> [S3.4]
So what recipes should I shortcut?
Why the most useful ones of course. The recipes that give the most benefit
for the least money and have the easiest to get ingredients.
(x_x) Unfortunately, I can't tell you at this point. Once I get more
information, look forward to some nice advice~ ( 'o')/
The road to recipe mastery is a rough and long one. Your characters will eat
many failed meals and you will have to fully restock your food at least once
for one character to master just ONE recipe. It's a given. (Now there might
be a set number for each character before they master a recipe or unlock a
new one, but I don't have -that- much time to confirm this or even give you
a rough estimate, so you'll have to play the waiting game.) Generally though,
it shouldn't take more than 30 tries before a character masters a recipe. As
for unlocking a new recipe.... that really varies. Yuri learned to make a
Beef Bowl I think by his first star on Rice Ball while Estelle all but
mastered Fried Chicken and Fries before she unlocked Scottish Egg. However,
I can provide you with a few more facts about the road to cooking mastery
(and once you achieve masterment):
-- Don't think that 3 stars = mastery (as in ToA). Keep cooking! You will see
the word 'mastered' appear above the character's head once they've got that
recipe under their belt.
-- You can still fail the recipe at Mastery level (Estelle just can't seem to
make sandwiches...) (x_x)
-- When your character fails a recipe, your party regains 1% HP & TP (wow,
it's just like eating dog food...!)
-- If you successfully cook the same recipe after failing, the potency
will still drop 1% (unless you have reached the fixed low).
-- The cooking screen does not always indicate the full effects of certain
recipes (Beef Bowl, for example). See below for those unmentioned bonuses.
-- The Kitchen Knife: I found this available for synthesis when the story made
me first return to Aspio. It requires 1000g, 1 merman fang, 1 merman's weapon
and 2 toad oil. The game's description doesn't tell you anything useful about
it and I couldn't even find any mention of it in the Brady guide, but if it's
anything like in ToA, then it increases the cooking success rate (and I can't
imagine any other uses for this Key Item).
-- The characters might not make a new recipe from a current one until after
mastery, so be patient. (I had to keep making Estelle cook Vichyssoise about
3 more times after mastery {and her skit} before I got the pork miso stew
recipe.)
>>> Recipes >>> [S4.1]
Here is the menu our gang gets to choose from for all their eating needs.
There are a total of 36 recipes to master (+ dog food). Here I have sorted
them by benefit, so there will be some repeating recipes (once you get to
'Status Recovery'). Recipes with a # before the name indicate incomplete
information and what is available is from the Brady guide.

>>> Errors >>> [S4.2]
There are several discrepancies in-game and in the Brady guide.
-- For all of the following food, the Battle Screen Menu information is
incorrect (Brady seems to have gotten their cooking stats from this). The
correct information is displayed on the menu cooking screen:
Fried Chicken and Fries -- increases MATK (not MDEF)
Scottish Eggs -- increases MATK (not MDEF)
Rice Balls -- restores 5% max HP & TP (not 15%)
Croquette -- increases MATK (not MDEF)
Okonomiyaki -- increases MATK (not MDEF)
Tempura -- increases MATK (not MDEF)
-- The Brady guide incorrectly states that Rita produces the Pork Stew
recipe. It is RAVEN who must cook Beef Bowl to get you Pork Stew.
-- The Brady guide incorrectly states that Sukiyaki increases DEF. Rather, it
increases ATK (the information in-game is correct).
-- Agility --
There is a bug concerning the Agility recipes (Salad, J. Stew, Veg. Stir Fry
& Soup Noodles). As first reported by CKunit, the cooking result box informs
you that your characters have gained 2000+ Agility (although not 2400% as he
put it when sucessfully cooked, as opposed to the battle screen menu, which
lists the increase from 20-60%. The character status page will reflect the
numerical bonus, however during battle the Agi increase is not as high,
though can be notable (especially soup noodles). It is best to assume that
the actual effects received from these recipes is the percentage increase
and not the numerical one. (Note: the numerical value decreases by 10% each
time the recipe is immediately repeated, bottoming out at 70% effectiveness.)
----------HOW DO I GET THE ___ RECIPE?-------------------------------- [S5.0]
OK, so you can't be bothered to look through the above chart to find out how
to get a certain recipe. Here's a brief list on unlocking everything:
<> Wonder Chef #1 -- Aspio -- Salisbury Steak
He's the jumping daikon outside the gates in the bottom lefthand
corner.
<> Wonder Chef #2 -- Capua Nor -- Sorbet
He's the yellow duck running around in circles past the inn to the
right of the ticket station.
<> Wonder Chef #3 -- Capua Torim -- Fried Chicken and Fries
He's the hopping blue fish right next to the lighthouse.
<> Wonder Chef #4 -- Heliord -- Fish with Miso Sauce
He's the swaying teruteru bouzu doll hanging at the back of the room you
first arrive in.
<> Wonder Chef #5 -- Dahngrest -- Minestrone Soup
He's directly to the right of the door leading to the Don's chamber.
<> Wonder Chef #6 -- Ghasfarost -- Salad
In the middle of the tower where you charge the gears you will notice a
spinning pinwheel on the right of the aer tube thingy. You can't reach him at
first, but you'll unlock the area in due time.
<> Wonder Chef #7 -- Nordopolica -- Kebab Sandwich
He's the jiggling trophy to the right of the entrance inside the
colisseum registration hallway.
<> Wonder Chef #8 -- Mantaic -- Curry
Head straight up from the fountain and look behind the knight standing at
the right at the little fork in the path. He's the bobbing cactus with a chef
hat, between the palm trees.
<> Wonder Chef #9 -- Yormgen -- Croquette
He's the rocking bowling pin-like object with a chef hat to the right
between the partition and beds in the inn.
<> Wonder Chef #10 -- Myozoro -- Cream Stew
Through the city gates and in the southeast of the city, you'll find him
disguised as an ice cream cone.
<> Wonder Chef #11 -- Nam Cobanda Isle -- Vichyssoise
Behind the ticket exchange Antlionz there is a wooden cutout painted with
the Wonder Chef outfit. He's not moving and is easy to overlook.
<> Wonder Chef #12 -- Aurnion -- Crepe
He's the scarecrow waving back & forth at the far east of town.
<> Wonder Chef #13 -- Nordopolica -- Mabo Curry
On the dock. Just having (not mastering) all other recipes makes him
appear and invite you to the cooking contest.
>>> Other Recipes >>> [S5.3]
<> Dog Food -- make Repede cook
<> Sandwich -- Quoi Woods Event
<> Seafood Bowl -- Nor Harbor. Near the end of the game, speak to the older
lady outside the inn during the day.
----------WHERE TO GET INGREDIENTS------------------------------------ [S6.0]
I've listed the ingredients you'll be using to cook, how much they can be
purchased and sold for, what stores sell which goods and who you can beat
up to get food for free.
Once I am able to, I intend to provide information on the following two
games/sidequests:
>>> Cooking Master Sidequest >>> [S7.1]
Just some facts for now:
-- Only one character has to participate in the competition for all of your
characters to get their chef titles.
>>> Dahngrest Waiting Game >>> [S7.2]
I'll write about this if I think it needs any pointers. (Hey! It's
food-related!)
Several people have sent in information regarding how to get skits, and it
seems that these are unlocked by having the same character cook constantly.
I'm not sure how I will set up this section yet, so for now I'll quote
what others have told me on how to get skits. Also, ReroTheZero and C-girl
have kindly offered to supply skit transcripts, so I will include what they
send me along with the ones I have unlocked.
>>> Player-submitted Information >>> [S8.1]
>> "Rita complains about having to cook a lot ... (I think I triggered this
after making her cook the same thing in a row a few times?)" -- Kat
>> "The one i remember best ... was Raven's skit. I had Omelette Rice
mastered, two stars on Scottish Egg and Sorbet for him, and i just had him
keep cooking Omelette Rice from no stars to mastered." -- C-girl
>> "There's a skit where they all make comments about how much they don't
like eating the same food all the time. At that time, i was on Fried Chicken
and Fries, and just going through each character on it. I had gone through
Yuri, Rita, then when i was on Estelle, it happened. It sounded like it
happened because i was just constantly cooking one recipe, but i can't be
100% sure, since they were all making comments to Estelle. But, for the most
part, it seemed to revolve around me cooking the same recipe for a while."
-- C-girl
>> "I also managed to get one for Yuri and Estelle as well, but I don't
remember too much on those ... If i remember right, Estelle had mastered
Sorbet, Sandwich, Fried Chicken and Fries, and Rice Ball already, then before
the skit took place, i put her through the Salisbury Steak, Pudding, and Fish
with Miso Sauce." -- C-girl
>> "For Yuri, it was about the same thing, except i didn't having Pudding
mastered, and i already mastered the Fish with Miso. I put him through
Omelette Rice in place of it." -- C-girl
>> "The skit that someone talks about with Rita is definitely just triggered
by cooking with Rita and no one else and it is entitled 'IT'. What you cook
does not matter. I was bouncing between sorbet, fried chicken and fries and
something else. She talks about putting 'it' into the food next time she has
to cook. Everyone else is intimidated but Estelle thinks it is something good,
obviously being naive as always. I can't remember if I had Judith in my party
or not by the time I got it, but I got it pretty early on." -- CKunit
>> "One skit involves Rita complaining about how she won't eat the food you've
been cooking, ... she dislikes foods that have a bunch of fish as ingredients.
(Fish with Miso Sauce isn't one of them though >.>) I got that [in part 2]."
-- ReroTheZero
>> "Another one is about Karol, and MAN are the requirements lame. You have to
make Karol cook ONE recipe that he likes over and over till he's mastered it
and that being the only food you cook. I tried making him cook all kinds of
foods to try and find his 'Why am I the only one cooking?' skit, and it seems
that Croquettes was the magic recipe that gave it to me. ... On the the skit,
it's all about how everyone gets mad at him for cooking only one things for
weeks, where he comebacks saying 'I'm the cook so I should cook what I like.'"
-- ReroTheZero
>> "Yuri (I think) made a comment about where the recipe book was, and Rita
answers him that she had been using it for battle, but she reurned it to its
place because it was so thin that it didn't hit well. The skit ends with
Judith saying something like 'I guess we cook too little, we have very few
recipes'. To get it, I think you must cook very little through the whole game
(I got it near the end of part 2), and have your whole party (if I remember
well, each character says something)." -- EstebanF

Title: The Secret Ingredient
How to Obtain: Have Yuri Mastered! Croquettes
When to Obtain: Any time you have Yuri, Judtih, Karol, Rita and Raven in the
party during Part 2
KAROL: Yuri's croquettes are the best!
RITA: How strange... They're just balls of mashed potatoes, but...
JUDITH: There must be a secret ingredient!
RAVEN: Oh yeah? What'd ya put in it, Yuri?
YURI: ...Love
*Everyone shocked*
RITA: Agh! ...*Hack* *hack* Ick,blech!
KAROL: Wh-who are you and what did you do with Yuri...?
RAVEN: My hearin' isn't what it used to be. What did ya say the secret
ingredient was?
YURI: *Serious* Love! The lady who ran the inn where I lived always said
cooking was all about love.
*Sensual tone* I put as much love in them as I could... so eat them
with care, okay?
KAROL: *Sceptical* Yuri's love-filled croquettes...
RITA: Ugh...
RAVEN: *Regretfully* I wish they weren't so good...
JUDITH: A secret ingredient is a cook's greatest treasure. You didn't want
to tell them, did you?
YURI: Actually, I didn't put anything special in there at all.
===============
Title: Call It What It Is!
How to Obtain: Have Estelle master vichyssoise
KAROL: Estelle, your potato soup sure is good!
YURI: I'm not used to soup being cold, but this is really delicious.
ESTELLE: It's not potato soup. It's vichyssoise.
YURI: Estelle, what would you call a soup made from onions?
ESTELLE: That would be onion soup, but...
KAROL: Then this is potato soup!
ESTELLE: No, it's vichyssoise! It's the name of the dish!
YURI: Hey, Rita. What would you call this soup?
RITA: ...Potato soup.
ESTELLE: Why won't any of you call it vichyssoise...?
===============
Title: The Artiste
{At least have Yuri, Estelle, Karol, Repede, and Rita}
Obtained: Have Karol master Rice Omelette. (tiepohs: got right after Ghost
Ship)
KAROL: *happy, upper torso shot* All right! On today’s menu we have...
a rice omelette!
RITA: *shock*
ESTELLE: Wow... this looks great! You drew a face on it with ketchup! This is
Repede’s face, isn’t it?
YURI: Mine is Repede facing to the left.
REPEDE: *Woof!*
RITA: Mine’s a... golem? *smiles* Wow, you even got all the details right.
ESTELLE: *smiles*
YURI: *shock* You’re really talented, Karol.
KAROL: *grins* Heh, so are they good? I spiced it up by adding some... Huh?
*curious* Why aren’t you eating?
ESTELLE: *looking down* It’s so cute... I don’t want to ruin it by eating it!
RITA: *looking off to the side* I wanted to save him...
KAROL: C-come on, eat up! Don’t stare! *shouting* Eat it already I worked
really hard!
===============
Title: Melt's a Yoing Girl's Heart
How to Obtain: Have Raven master crepes
KAROL: How'd you master making crepes, Raven? I thought you hated sweet
foods.
RAVEN: My boy, you got a lot ta learn about the miraculous powers sweet foods
have over the ladies.
An exquisite crepe melts a young girl's heart and leads her straight
into the arms of the chef--me!
ESTELLE: For people who like sweet things, there's nothing harder to refuse
than a delicious crepe.
JUDITH: And if you know someone made it just for you...
KAROL: Uh...yeah, I guess crepes could really reel 'em in...
RITA: I know someone's reeling at least...
RAVEN: Told ya. They love me!
KAROL: Y-yeah, okay, good luck, then.
RAVEN: Not luck, son. Skill.
===============
Title: All for You...
How to Obtain: Got it after defeating Pteropus in the Weasand of Cados. Had
Yuri and Raven cooking cake, meat sauce, kebab sandwich and clam chowder.
KAROL: Yuri, you're really good at cooking!
REPEDE: *Woof*
RAVEN: Yer not half bad yerself, Karol.
YURI: You're pretty good at it too, for an old man who's always making
excuses not to cook.
RAVEN: The ladies love a man who can cook!
KAROL: No way... If that were true, I'd be the coolest guy around!
RAVEN: Seriously, it's true!
KAROL: Even if it doesn't make me cool, I guess I'm happy just to have other
people enjoy my cooking.
YURI: Yeah, it's a lot better than just cooking for yourself.
REPEDE: *Woof*
RAVEN: It's nice watchin' a lady enjoy a good meal. I could care less about
guys.
KAROL: Next time I cook for you, Raven, all you're getting is a butter
sandwich.
YURI: Nah, spreading butter is too much work. Just give him the crusts.
RAVEN: What happened ta being happy about other people enjoy yer cooking...?

Title: Rita's 3-Second Cooking
How to Obtain: (Sorry, I don't know. I assume it's linked to Estelle and/or
Judith cooking.)
ESTELLE: Oooh, I'm following the recipes... Why isn't my food coming out as
good as yours, Judith?
JUDITH: I do all my seasoning by taste. Maybe that's it.
RITA: Try canging the balance of ingredients, or adding some seasoning
that's not in the recipe.
ESTELLE: Good idea. I'll try that.
JUDITH: Rita, I never expected to hear such practical advice coming from you!
RITA: H-Hey! I'm not the best cook, but adding spices is like mixing
chemicals. It's just chemistry.
JUDITH: I guess in a way...but I also feel like that's not all there is to it.
ESTELLE: So do you and Yuri use your own special seasonings? Is that why your
food is so good?
JUDITH: Exactly. If you just rely on the recipe, your cooking will never be
really delicious.
ESTELLE: Cooking is hard, but I'll keep trying. I want to learn to make better
food!
JUDITH: That desire is the most important thing of all.
===============
Title: Hunger is the Best Spice
How to Obtain: Don't cook for a while
KAROL: I'm so hungry...
RAVEN: I'm dyin' here...
YURI: Already? The girls look like they're doing fine.
*gurgle*
KAROL: ...Was that Estelle? LIsten, her stomach's rumbling, too!
ESTELLE: I can wait. Though it's been a little difficult...
*gurgle*
RAVEN: Hmm? That sounded like it came from Rita.
*gurgle*
YURI: Judy, you too? Are you trying to see who can hold out the longest?
JUDITH: Perhaps a diet is a little bit like a competition in holding out.
RAVEN: A diet? What do you need a diet for?! Especially you, Rita! Lose any
more weight and you'll--
RITA: I'm just waiting until I finish reading this book, okay!?
===============
Title: About to Go Wild
How to Obtain: Don’t cook for a while.
KAROL: I can't take it anymore... I'm seriously gonna starve...
RAVEN: Can I eat a gel?
YURI: No
REPEDE: Grrrr woof
RAVEN: D-does the pooch look a little scary ta anyone else?
RITA: Oh, he's probaby just hungry enough for his wild instincts to kick
in.
JUDITH: ......
ESTELLE: ......
RAVEN: The pooch isn't the only one about to go wild.
YURI: I'm no good at diets, seriously.
KAROL: This isn't a diet. It's a fast... Why do we have to stop eating,
too?
JUDITH: We can't have delicious smells just wafting by! We're just as
hungry as you are!
KAROL: Agh, what a tyrant...
===============
Title: Let's Eat Already!
How to Obtain: Don't cook for a long time.
KAROL: I...am...so...hungry...! We're seriously gonna starve!
JUDITH: Save your energy, Karol. You'll just make yourself hungrier.
ESTELLE: Sharp stomachs make short graces, Karol.
KAROL: ...What does that mean?
YURI: It means hunger can make you rude...and that leads to angry people
attacking you with sharp things.
RAVEN: I think yer a little off...
But whatever, Yuri and Rita seem ta be pretty calm despite not
havin' eaten in a while.
YURI/RITA: I'm used to it.
RAVEN: Uh huh...
ESTELLE: Ah! ...There's a delicious steak, right on top of Repede's back...
JUDITH: It's a trap! Don't succumb to temptation.
YURI: Maybe we should do something about this...
KAROL: Yuri! Yuri! I found a green piece of veggie-bread in my bag! I can
eat it, right? Right?
YURI: What the... No, Karol, don't!
Seriously, this is getting dangerous. Let's eat something already!
===============
Title: Hot Food, Hot Sun
How to Obtain: Cooked udon hot pot in the sands of Kogorh (at night, but I'm
sure it works in the day as well). (I was cooking mabo curry earlier but ran
out of inredients.) (Vegetable stir-fry may also work {see transcript})
RITA: Who the hell decided to pan-fry noodles in the middle of a searing
hot desert?
ESTELLE: People should really give more thought to these decisions...
YURI: Yeah. And it's not just hot--this strong taste really dries out your
throat, too!
REPEDE: *Woof, woof woof*
JUDITH: I feel like the more I eat, the weaker I get...
YURI: I can't stop sweating. Damn it, I can't stop!
KAROL: Yuri, you're more worked up than usual...
RAVEN: ...Let's just say ya owe us one, boss.
YURI: Owe you one?
RAVEN: I see what yer doin', gettin' all worked up. Ya said yourself
yesterday that ya wanted some noodles.
So did ya make 'em yourself? Did ya ask someone else ta do it? Hmm?
YURI: ...Sorry. I guess fried noodles really aren't good for eating in the
desert.
REPEDE: *...Whine*
===============
Title: The Cold if Fatal
How to Obtain: Cook sorbet a bunch of times in the Blade Drifts. Doesn’t
matter who, just COOK!
RITA: Who the hell thought it’d be a good idea make s-s-sorbet in this
freezing weather…
KAROL: It’s s-s-so cold, my t-t-teeth are chattering too much to eat…
JUDITH: I think sorbet can be delicious, even in the cold.
RITA: So it was you!
JUDITH: I was just expressing my opinion… I never said it was me!
KAROL: J-J-Judith, you’re all right eating sorbet d-d-dressed like that?
RAVEN: If ya get... an upset stomach, Judy... I’ll give ya a massage!
RITA: Th-th-that’s hardly something you should be saying, with your
p-p-purple lips and your runny nose!
YURI: Rita, can you... cast spells... like that?
RITA: P-p-probably not... my t-t-teeth are chattering to much...
KAROL: And my hands are t-t-too stiff to hold my weapons!
YURI: Eating sorbet... in a frigid cold field of snow... th-th-this is
not fun...
===============
Skit Title: Again...?
How to Obtain: Have your charactes eat a dish they all feel Neutral about
When to Obtain: All party members present when food is cooked (I got it
after Ghost-Ship)
KAROL: *Sigh* ...Again?
ESTELLE: This food's a staple. But... I do wonder why we always have the same
thing to eat. We have other recipes we could be making.
KAROL: Rita said she liked it so much she could eat it every day!
RITA: Hey, the old man was whining about how he hates every other kind of
food.
RAVEN: Well, Yuri was goin' on and on about how we hafta save money on food!
YURI: Judy, didn't you say this would be a good way to compare our cooking?
JUDITH: I thought Estelle was trying to perfect this dish...
*Silence*
YURI: ...I want something else.
KAROL: Me too!
RAVEN: Me three!
RITA: I'm tired of this!
JUDITH: Our other recipes are going to waste!
ESTELLE: All right, let's eat something different next time, okay?
*Everybody's smiling*
KAROL: So I wasn't the only one who was tired of it after all...
===============
Skit Title: Done Growin'
How to Obtain: Cook Foods that Raven dislikes (Sorbet, Pudding, Cake, etc.)
When to Obtain: Anytime All Party Members Present. (I got mine during Part 3)
RAVEN: Stop making food I don't like! Make somethin' else! I won't take
this bullyin'!
JUDITH: Okay... No food for you then.
KAROL: All of us have things we don't like, but you don't see us
complaining. Live with it.
RITA: You should be thankful. I stopped reading to come here and eat with
you, you know!
ESTELLE: An unbalanced diet can lead to an unhealthy body!
RAVEN: I'm done growin'! I can afford a little lack of nutrition at my age!
REPEDE: **Woof Woof! WOOF!**
YURI: Repede's making fun of you, old man. He says your a disgrace to
humans. You're the oldest one here... Aren't you ashamed of
yourself?
RAVEN: No way. I'm a poor excuse for a grown-up.
YURI: Sheesh, listen to him...
JUDITH: You're terrible.
*Raven turns to stone*

Title: Pouty Estelle
How to Obtain: {C-Girl: Not really sure how I got it. I just cooked a number
of times, and it ended up happening to me when we returned to Rita’s house,
before Zaude’s rise. / tiepohs: I got it while doing a lot of camping (working
on Dog Map) during the same time period.)
ESTELLE: I love dinner cooked outside over a campfire! (music note) Maybe
it's the spice of the stars...
YURI: The spice of the stars, huh? Heh, maybe so.
REPEDE: Woof!
KAROL: Nah, the food you get at an inn in a town is way better.
RAVEN: the pretty young lady says somethin' nice, and ya gotta go kill the
mood!
REPEDE: *groan*
KAROL: Wait, no... But...
RITA: Food is food, no matter where you eat it! It's all the same mush in
your stomach, anyway.
RAVEN: And there's out little ray of sunshine to chime in with somethin'
even more insensitive!
ESTELLE: No, it's okay... You're right. Inns do have better food, and it
doesn't matter where you eat...
YURI: Aw, look, you made Estelle all pouty!
RITA: Er, no, I mean, I, you see... Well, I guess... ...Sorry.
===============
Title: A True Gourmand
How to Obtain: Cook dog food a few times to mastered.
RITA: Hey, there's something seriously messed up about people eating dog
food.
YURI: It's all the same mush once it hits your stomach, right?
RITA: Dog food and people food are total different!
KAROL: You're just afraid you'll start liking it.
ESTELLE: But don't you think the taste is addictive? I love the unusual
flavor!
YURI: An acquired taste for the true gourmand.
REPEDE: Woof!
KAROL: Maybe that's one taste I don't really need to acquire...

----------VESPERIA COOKING VS OTHER TALES GAMES----------------------- [S9.0]
There are several differences when it comes to cooking in ToV that veteran
fans will notice. (I've only played 4 other Tales games, so please bear
with me.) This is more of a 'point of interest' section than a guide.
-- Unlike Tales of Symphonia or Tales of the Abyss, the ingredients
neccessary for the recipe are the -only- ingredients your characters will
use. So unfortunately, you don't get tons of little bonuses like when Genis
cooked in ToS (of course, he only used half of your ingredients for each
recipe (x_x)), or specialized recipes thanks to an extra ingredient like in
ToA (I still don't understand how Jade can make fried tofu using just
chicken...).
-- The majority of your recipes are learned via cooking other recipes.
Unfortunately, you don't get free ingredients when you learn those new
recipes. However, when the Wonder Chef (hooray, he's back!) teaches you a
recipe, he's quite generous as usual and gives you 3 of each of the necessary
ingredients with which to practice.
-- Unlike in other games, you do not have characters who excel or stink at
cooking. No more guessing games like in Tales of Eternia or blatantly
ignoring others (I'm looking at you, Refill...)
-- In previous games, only one character could master all recipes to get a
cooking title. However in ToV, all characters except Repede can earn a
cooking title. There are no costumes attached to the titles, however.
Please be patient and bear with me. I promised my boyfriend I wouldn't
advance the plot without him, and when he's attending university in a
different country, you can't play together that often. The information you
see here are the results of hours of grinding (Hm, I guess I have nothing
better to do (>.>);), information from the Brady guide (some of it is
incorrect, I know...) and, well, a love of cooking.
>>> Help Me Out! >>> [S10.1]
If you can provide me with information to pad this guide, I'm sure I'm not
the only one who would be grateful. In particular, please help me with:
>> Detailed Wonder Chef locations
>> Confirmation of marked (#) recipes cooked at master level. Also, any bonus
effects are needed. Please make sure that you do NOT cook the recipe
consecutively so you can provide accurate information. When I eventually
master the recipe, I will discredit you if you provide inaccurate
information.
>> Information regarding any stat bonuses the chef titles may provide.
>> Errors -- in-game, Brady guide or my FAQ. Please be clear.
>> ToV vs other Tales cooking trivia is always interesting to know, but
please make sure it includes ToV, and not, say, ToE vs ToS.
>> If you manage to get a cooking skit, please provide details.
